I think it's about someone trying to find a place to stand. He is looking for a voice in America's chorus of color. Brown is picked because there is a "black". "Black" was selected because there was a need to distinguish from "white." It is only another version of the Color Game in America.
Here is a person who is writing about trading in ancestral nationality/heritage for color.
What kind of mind massage is that?
It is self-denigrating
We are fighting to get out. This dude is fighting to get in. Duh!!!!
You are who you say you are. Your children are who you say you are.
I'd like to know what "browning" pot his a$$ is in, 'cause it isn't from the same planet I'm on. All I have to do is open up a magazine, or turn on the TV, and WHAT DO I SEE?? European this, European that. The Hispanic race has grown to the point to where the American media has been FORCED to market and cater to their culture and lifestyle. We as African Americans got the ball rolling, but Hispanics played a part in opening the diversity door (as far as spreading opportunity to other races/cultures). Five years ago you did not see Arab-Americans and Orientals in magazines or commercials. Now, they're in every other advertisement.
The minorities of this country are a target market for one reason only-because it is GOOD FOR BUSINESS, AND NOTHING MORE!!!!! All corporate America sees are $$$ signs. This serves as a reminder the real reason why Abe Lincoln emancipated slaves, not for the LOVE OF THE NEGRO, not because it was an immoral thing to do, but for the LOVE OF THE COUNTRY. And to think that the U.S. will go to any length to keep Haitians away from our borders!! Land of opportunity? My A$$ it is!!
We have such a long way to go, a lot of battles won, but this racial war is far from over.

The United States has always had a reason for preventing Haitians from entering. The United States at first feared, and has subsequently penalized Haiti for defeating Napoleon and kicking the French out of power.
There is an irony in the disruption of power in Haiti with this year being the anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. The transaction was the swan song of Napoleon's aspirations in North America. Haiti was then 12 years old as a free nation. The United States was completing its second 100 years as a chattel slavery society.
Netris, you raise a good point that many people overlook. Honorable Greg Mathis touched on this issue a during the "State of the Black Family" symposium last week Saturday. Black [black, red, brown and yellow] people are often looked upon as great business investments to exploit. The examples cited by Judge Mathis were the reason for bringing Africans to the New World and the recent surge in placating and courting of the Latino community. It is simply for economic reasons. When the whites are done with the Latinos, they'd better watch out because they'll be calling for them to go back to South America, Africa or wherever else they came from! The hard reality will sink in for them one of these days. I think that the point that is being made by Netris, correct me if I'm wrong, is that these groups are being pimped for financial and political gain of European descendants.

You are right. It is the same pimping that the United States is doing with drugs. $15 billion dollars PER YEAR, and we can't stop drugs????? Puhleeze!! Everyone knows all you have to do is kill the profit.
As to "protecting" our borders: We have technology to "driver around on Mars." Yet we can't keep unwanted persons from crossing our borders without using a standing army? Puhleeze!! Everyone knows it is easier and cheaper to operate robots on earth, than on Mars.
These things exist, because America wants them to exist. The reason is cheap labor in the one case, and control/repression of a threatening population in the other.
Please, it is plain to see that Richard Rodriguez is just adding a little color to right-wing ideology, period, end of sentence.
You saw what he did, right? He criticized black identity politics, eschewing racial categorizations while feeling free to speak proudly of his Latino heritage.
Yep, Richard Rodriguez grew up as an "honorary white" and recoiled when he heard a black professor try to equate Latinos and blacks. He wants us to forget that we are black and try to act white so we can experience the "white freedom" that he experienced.
I'm glad to say that most Latinos don't think like that. After a couple generations, children of Latino immigrants start to act black because of their current marginalizations.
However, If Latinos stopped immigrating in droves and perpetuating their poverty and outsider status however, their generations would start looking like what white ethnics look like now. As you all know, not all Latinos arrive poor, and those that don't "make it" can always go back to where they came from. Those that do "make it" in this country will make for a skewed result in the "success" of Latinos as compared to blacks.
Which is another reason why I can't stand assholes like Richard Rodriguez in the first place.
There's no such races as HISPANICS; LATINOS. They're a mixture of more than a couple "races". Hair's straight in most cases, so they be "barefootin' "!! They're glorified Africans who speak Spanish. They belong to America's COLOR CASTE SYSTEM. 'Tis all!!
"White" folks catch up when they're older and get those so-called melanined "age spots".
