You are soooooooo right sista Norland. Ma and Pa store front restaurants SCARE the hell outta me. I used to go to a chinese restaurant and wondered why the chicken drumsticks were sooooo big[I think I mention this in another post]. Stopped going. Look we have to realize that folks outside of this country EAT very differently. In south India, the shudra hunt rats for meals. There are cultures that dine on snakes, cats, dogs because that's all their country has to offer in terms of food. Plus it's a different food ethics based on climate and environment
I remember watching China Beach years ago, the scene showed a food court where there were caged puppies. One of the nurses selected a puppy to buy. Well she thought the lady was looking for something to collar the dog,...well she almost fainted when she witnessed the woman hitting the dog over the head, killing it, putting in a bag and handing it to her! I freaked out watching it. And it was television! So that was one indicator that you can't trust what a foreigner's food may be. Just can't. Something horrible to us may be delicious to them.
When I saw an Asian villager eat an eel? Or when I saw an Indian [India] man cut the head off a rat and then put the rat in his mouth? Or heard about Japanese cuisine caveat cats as a delicacy? DONE. DONE and DONE. We won't mention the eating of dolphins, whales and sharks. Now from time to time, I will go to a Red Lobsters or another popular places in town. But unless I'm real hungry and I'm out I will eat french fries or [rarely] eat something I KNOW is what the restaurant says it is but other than that? I eat at home. But!
