Which leaders speak for black America?

Opinion

Is there a leadership crisis in black America? A new poll suggests African-Americans think so.

The poll was commissioned by BET founder Robert L. Johnson, also the chairman of The RLJ Companies, and was released by Zogby Analytics.  And the results are shocking.

According to the online survey of 1,002 African-Americans, when asked the question “Which of the following speaks for you most often?” 40 percent said that no one speaks for them, while 24 percent said the Reverend Al Sharpton of the National Action Network and MSNBC speaks for black people, and 11 percent said the Reverend Jesse Jackson of Rainbow PUSH.

Meanwhile, 9 percent of black respondents named Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D‐CA), 8 percent said NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous speaks for them, and 5 percent mentioned Assistant Democratic Leader, Congressman James E. Clyburn (D‐SC).  Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, and former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele each received 2 percent.

Why this survey and why now?

Johnson said that given the historic re-election of President Obama, he wanted to know how African-Americans feel about his presidency and whether they feel better off after his first term in office.  African-Americans were hardest hit by the hardest economic slump since the Great Depression, and yet they give extraordinary high favorable ratings to Obama, who is a source of racial pride. Ninety-one percent of blacks in the poll gave the president a thumbs up, while 72 percent thought his election helped them and a mere 4 percent said it hurt them.

“My primary concern is why, after enacting and enforcing needed civil and equal rights laws, spending more money on education for African-American students at all levels than at any other time in the history of this nation, and having twice elected an African-American president, black American families are still experiencing a growing disparity in employment, access to capital, wealth accumulation, and as a direct consequence, stagnation in economic opportunity and quality of life,” Johnson said of the poll.

If Obama can’t lead black America, who can?

The survey raises an important question. Although black voters overwhelmingly support President Obama, there is a tacit understanding that he is the president of all people and therefore cannot speak for the interests of black America exclusively. And yet, his detractors are threatened by a black man who presides over an entire nation.

In the age of Obama, a black president is not enough for the black community. It still needs leaders who will pressure the president and others to do the right thing, such as the role played by Martin Luther King in the Johnson administration. Well, if that’s the case, then who are the real “leaders” of black America?

Perhaps black America is looking for leadership in all the wrong places.  Do we need a messiah who is all things to all people and will take us to the promised land?  Or should we identify and cultivate leaders using more realistic criteria?

After all, despite the canonization of Martin Luther King today, we should remember that his popularity declined, and not all African-Americans believed he spoke for them.  Some condemned him for speaking out against the Vietnam War and veering away from civil rights and into the realm of international human rights.  And critics railed against his call for economic justice and a radical redistribution of wealth in America.

Who are the black leaders today?

Where are the black leaders today? For example, seemingly ubiquitous leaders such as Rev. Sharpton always stood up for the families of slain police brutality victims, and for victims of gun violence such as Trayvon Martin.  Across the nation, people have known that you always call Rev. Al in an emergency.  And now, he has emerged as a national figure with a cable news program on MSNBC, and more access to the White House than any African-American leader.

“We at National Action Network are gratified that in light of the fact that you have an African-American President and Attorney General, it shows that Blacks still say other people speak for them and most of them say Sharpton is that person,” said Tamika D. Mallory, National Executive Director of the National Action Network.  “Aside from that, the fact that 1 out of 4 Black people say he speaks for them is a tribute to his work.”

Ben Jealous of the NAACP represents a new generation of activist leaders, struggling against voter ID laws, speaking up for Troy Davis—who was executed in Georgia despite evidence of his innocence—and helping to secure repeal of the death penalty in Maryland.

At the same time we find black leadership in unlikely places, including those who do not bear fancy titles, but are in the trenches nevertheless.  Consider people such as Shujaa Graham, Nathson Fields and Delbert Tibbs of the organization Witness to Innocence—wrongfully convicted, exonerated death row survivors who are now fighting against a racially unjust death penalty that nearly killed them.

Certainly first lady Michelle Obama, a high-powered lawyer and nonprofit executive, steps up the leadership game, if she doesn’t redefine it.  There is black leadership in the business world, including entrepreneurs such as Oprah Winfrey, the first African-American woman billionaire. And black celebrities such as Harry Belafonte and Danny Glover are powerful leaders who use their fame to exert a sense of social responsibility.

A time of crisis and opportunity

Yet, if African-American leadership is in as terrible state as the Johnson poll suggests, then there is opportunity in times of crisis. If black America lacks the leadership that represents its best interests, then it must identify and groom new effective leaders. This means black messiahs may not fit the bill anymore.

We must allow black leaders to grow where they live; in their local communities.  Sometimes identifying them requires little more than looking in the mirror.

That is totally ridiculous.

And that is why I wanted Hillary to get the nomination.  Obama should have let Hillary have it.

The economy was screwed up under Bush.  But there is a time delay in economic effects.  Whoever came after Bush was going to get egg all over their face with a hammer.

I wanted the White broad to get take the hit.  But NO!  Obama had to be dumb enough to step up to the plate.   Now history will say a Black man wrecked the country.

Haven't the White folks controlled the educational system?   Doesn't White history say that they invented double-entry accounting in Italy 700 years ago?

OH YEAH!  That is one of those things you have to research.  They don't tell us up front.

So why hasn't double-entry accounting been mandatory in the schools for the last 50 years?   I don't even know if my high school had it.  Probably did but part of some pink collar vocational track.  Black Americans let White folks define and control education and we are all supposed to listen to Black Christian ministers like they know what is going on.

Xum

Question:  Which black leaders speak for us?  None!  Not wthl all this stuff going on lately in our school system, neighborhoods and driving while black.  Haven't heard  a peep outta none of them...except when it will get them "air" time...then we are OVERWHELMED...with them saying NOT one effective....word. Just a lotta yapping to the point where I have to ASK:  who's these people?   Where the HELL did they come from?   But!

If you think significantly outside the White folks box you must be stupid or crazy anyway.  Telling them they are the problem even to themselves messes with their minds.

Think about the Cuban Missile Crisis for a minute.  Their economists can't talk about planned obsolescence or tell them what they have lost on depreciation of all of the junk cars but they nearly blew up the planet to defend Capitalism.

But one PhD economist called me a LOONY and another one called me an IDIOT.

I was actually shocked when one told me I was correct and that the text books are wrong.  What does it mean when the only direction to go is different from what the White leaders have been telling the White folks for the last 50 years?

Worse yet a dysfunctional black electorate keep voting for the very misfits that you have described.  All of which is causing the U.S. born descendant of slavery segment of the Black community to be the fastest shrinking ethnic group in the U.S.

You mean you Black folks are not happy that I sang an Al Green song for you in Harlem. Why some of you even applauded me.   Surely, singing an “Al Green’ ballad will go a long way to reduce high unemployment, to address the issues of inequities in the courts, “un-Equal Justice and Protection Under the Law", that U.S. born Blacks face in Harlem, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit, Newark, Oakland, etc., etc.   Just think of all the good times we had together while I sang that Al Green song or songs anytime you feel hungry, or that an Al Green ballad will make you feel better when you don’t have the means to provide food, clothing, or shelter for yourself, or your family, because of the treason to keep blacks in poverty and unemployed, on the part of so many elected black leaders from the Democratic and the Republican Party affiliations, at every level of government!

Although Caucasians have been guilty of oppressing U.S. born Blacks too, the greatest deterrent to the advancement of U.S. born Blacks today, is the treason that exists within the black community itself, and/or treasonous university educated Blacks, like a Clarence Thomas, who make excuses to do nothing or “side with rogue police officers and unethical city prosecutors” activity that guarantees that U.S. born Blacks won’t get a fair trial, won’t receive redress from any jury award, etc., etc.

The incompetence/treason of individuals like University educated Justice Clarence, and the silence on the part of past and present elected black leaders, i.e. multiple members of the Democratic Congressional Black Clueless....AKA.....the Democratic Congressional Black Caucus, who are also university educated and hold positions of influence, and who are members of the Democratic Party or the Republican Party, but choose to do nothing to remove scum like a “Clarence Thomas” from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Unlike Dr. Umar Johnson and numerous other blacks who do not place value in his or her U.S. citizenship, in contrast,  I value U.S. citizenship, and the Constitutional protections that are associated with being a U.S. citizen.  Even illegal immigrants attempt to protest whenever they believe his or her Constitutional rights are violated, and these individuals don't have any Constitutional rights because illegal immigrants are neither citizens nor legal immigrants, but they still have more sense than many U.S. born Black men and women who are citizens, but who devalue his or her citizenship.

The Constitution was written by SLAVEHOLDERS.  Africans weren't on their minds when it was written.  All my days on this planet, I have never been referred to as an American.  I hear MINORITY (lesser than) all the time, and behind closed doors, I imagine it gets worse than that.  When the African goes wrong, it's not the AFRICAN who handles the situation, It's the CAUCASIAN.  Had we all been born in Japan or China, would we be calling ourselves African-Japanese or African-Chinese?  If we did, how dumb would we be and how dumb would we appear??  Just asking!!

LOL

Ever watch documentaries and hear the term "mankind".  They say mankind did this or mankind did that.  Ever ask yourself how often what they are talking about only involves White folks.

Has MANKIND been to the Moon.  White Americans and White Russians competed to go to the Moon.  Americans "WON" and haven't been back for 40 years.  This year will be the 44th anniversary.

But now MANKIND is wrecking the planet with technology and White economists have said nothing about the planned obsolescence of automobiles since the Moon landing.  Galbraith wrote about it in 1959.

So where are we getting down with the technology and not worrying about what we are called.  African American means Ni@@er NAZI as far as I am concerned.

This is not 1865, and the Dread Scott decision has no bearing on what happens today.

The only enslavement that U.S. born Blacks face today is the obstacles that he or she place on themselves and/or any treasonous misfit from within the Black community itself who contributes to disparaging Constitutional protections.

Slim chance exists that any of these individuals, as it concerns Norland, Dr. Umar Johnson, any loud mouth and misguided Black nationalists talking against the merits of the Constitution and the value of American citizenship racing to relocate to any other part of the planet to make a living, to raise their families, relocating once and for all to leave the U.S. for Cuba, the Sudan, Somalia, Pakistan, South Africa, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, Mexico, Kenya, Nigeria, North Korea, China, Japan, etc., etc.

http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-760112

http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-825822

The very individuals who did, namely Eldridge Cleaver, other members of the Black Panthers, regretted it, and the ones who were lucky enough to return to the U.S., were so grateful to be allowed to re-enter the U.S. that these individuals virtually kissed U.S. soil.

Provided an individual is competently represented the U.S. is still the greatest and most equitable nation on the planet.

It would behoove anyone with any sense, who faces criminal indictment, who has any civil claim in any court or who is actually facing the music, and whose mission is to win, to ignore the misguided advice that trashes the value of the Constitution or the value of U.S. citizenship as represented by Dr. Umar Johnson, Norland, etc., etc., any university educated "fool" and fire any attorney, such as Attorney Elizabeth Harris, etc., etc., who places no value in Constitutional protections, or in competently representing a client.

This would be your life, future, reputation, assets, family, or best interests at stake.  No one needs an additional adversary in the courtroom, as this relates to hiring any attorney who is a disgrace to the profession, and who is already against you, every second that he or she trashes the merits of Constitutional protections.  A hint to the wise should be sufficient.

Since this is a nation of individual rights, and the freedom of speech is a first Amendment Constitutional protection if an American citizen chooses to call his or herself a Tuvalu American, they have that right.

A.   A disgrace to the essence of what it means to be an elected official.

Indeed Norland, and some Blacks in contemporary years, meaning today, especially those in leadership positions, are just as disgraceful, spineless, and backwards as the African Chieftains who sold his or her own people into bondage during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade

Barnum and Bailey Circus was founded and kept financially  solvent on the premise that "A Fool is Born Everyday".

YouTube: "Black People Were Never Citizens Of Amerikkka" - Dr. Umar Johnson

Taking it  further, there are university educated black professors in this country who teach blacks to be stupid, teach them that they are not U.S. citizens, that U.S. born Blacks,  namely U.S. born descendants of the Vestibule of Slavery in the U.S., do not have any rights.   It is definitely moving fast in the wrong direction to accept nonsense that is not true.   The sad thing is that far too many U.S. born blacks accept this and are willing to finance ignorance at their own demise.  Any perpetrator guilty of stealing from, maiming or killing law, unlawfully violating the rights of Blacks abiding U.S. born descendants of slavery such as rogue police officers, unethical city prosecutors, other agents and officials of government, the KKK, the Aryan Nation, bigots from everywhere, the Mexican Mafia, etc., etc., are probably "High Fiving" Dr. Omar Johnson, because swallowing the garbage being disseminated by Dr. Omar Johnson guarantees there will be no will to fight back, stand up for your own best interests, and will make it true that U.S. born descendants of slavery don't have rights, namely because the individuals who fit the description have given their own rights away by being submissive, gullible, weak, ignorant, un-American, etc.

Finally, no matter how long and how often the Black Nationalist/Race Card players attempt to rationalize or make excuses for this, there is no excuse for this treasonous, spineless, and ignorant behavior.

Without regard to political Party affiliation, ethnicity, educational achievement, etc., etc., it is more or most important to vote for an elected official based upon his or her duty to uphold the oath of office, and respect the U.S. Constitution, a set of standards that are not a reality in most any relationship between elected Black leaders, and law abiding U.S. born descendants of slavery like me.   Anything less is commonly called just a "low information" voter.

THE JOB OF A CONGRESSMAN

“There are cases where an individual has been wrongfully treated by his government and about the only way, unless the individual resorts tocourt, and even in some cases the courts are not able to give proper relief, the only area or avenue open to the individual is through his representative. When you find a bona fide error has been made, I suggest that you make a maximum effort to remedy it. This I feel is a vital and important function of those of us in the House of Representatives”. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is very competent.   Condoleezza Rice is not sleazy, unethical, and treasonous like her counterparts who hold office as disgraceful elected officials.

Furthermore, unlike President Barack Obama, the CBC, and other elected Black leaders at the Federal, State, County, and City branches of government, Condoleezza Rice has never been an elected official, sworn under oath and mandated by law to serve U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.

Well Norland,

I'm the worse nightmare for anyone who violates my property rights,  Constitutional rights, publishes falsehoods (the Los Angeles Sentinel for example) about me, or any family member, etc., because I don't give in and I don't give up.   Some of this even precedes the internet and internet technology, to which I have written and signed documents to back up my claim or claims.

Selected comment:

"The problem with MASS-INCARCERATION is not the USA JUST_US system…

The problem is with Black people; as the old saying goes, ignorance of the law is no excuse…

When you nine (9) out of ten (10) Blacks taking plea deals, and pleading guilty because of their ignorance, then there is nothing you can do about that…

You go to any city in America, and Black folks will tell you, you better take that deal, these white folks don’t play here…and this is all too common among Blacks…

1) Never give up your right to “REMAIN SILENT”…

2) Never give up your right to a “SPEEDY TRIAL”…

These are the most common rights we give up as a whole…I have been charged with every crime under the SUN, just for being Black…held in jail with a high bond for months waiting to go to trial…put in cells with thugs, and had to fight daily, because the people think that I will plea guilty to their erroneous charges…

NEVER, to strong for that, my mind is not week…

You have Black court appointed attorneys convincing their clients to plea guilty, instead of the attorney doing their job to investigate a case; I guess it is a lot easier to get  $30,000.00 to convince your own race to plea guilty, then to have to work for the money and help convince a jury they are not guilty…

There is nothing your “NOT  the Black people’s President” can do for you…it is like education, it must start in the home…but for some reason, families are first one’s to convince you to take the deal" -PB Short.

60 Minutes, Sunday, March 24, 2013, “Blindsided: The exoneration of Brian Banks”. The woman, Wanetta Gibson, who made the false claim of rape against Brian Banks is black. “As his day in court approached, Brian says that his lawyer feared that he wouldn’t get a fair trial, based on his age, size & race. So she, an African-American herself, convinced Brian to plead no contest to a crime he insisted he didn’t commit.”. -Attorney Elizabeth Harris should be barred from practicing law.

Furthermore, unlike Brian Banks and other Black men and women, who are innocent, but who allow themselves to be talked into pleading "no contest" which is equivalent to "pleading guilty", no matter how many threats of jail time, prison incarceration, or bad advice are sent my direction by unethical city prosecutors,  any incompetent spineless attorney, etc., etc.  PB Short is also on target, and he definitely has more common sense, practical knowledge and backbone than a Barack Obama, multiple members of the CBC, numerous Black lawyers, and/or a sell out and misguided university educated blatantly dysfunctional Black middleclass.

I won't bend, nor compromise and I will never make any deal that would mean admitting guilt for any criminal act, or otherwise, that I am not guilty of.  I'll fire an attorney first.  Anyone who chooses to devalue, waive, or trash his or her own Constitutional/property rights can only fault themselves for the results.

Unlike you, I have good reason for condemning Barack "the Magic Negro" Obama, multiple members of the Democratic Congressional Black Clueless, .....AkA.....the Democratic Congressional Black Caucus, other elected Black leaders at the State, County, and City jurisdictions who are a disgrace to the essence of what it means to be an elected official, Black court Clerks (Delores Odom Stocks being one) who sign court judgments,  Professors (Dr. Umar Johnson) who teach or state that U.S. born Blacks don't have rights and are not citizens,  and inept Black lawyers who state forget about the Constitution, Keep it Simple and/or who advise innocent Black men or women to plead no contest, etc., etc..
