We're Marching To Zion . . . .

I've heard LOTS of moaning about black folks marching for this or that. The predominant feeling is that marching is a tactic of the past and that it invokes a time when - I guess - black folks weren't strong enough to execute more powerful measures to get what it wants.

This raises the question, as a tactic, if other groups do it - all over the world - then why it it an outmoded tool for us? Millions of Mexican Americans marched over the last week. I remember powerful marches in South America when Bush and other world leaders were meeting last summer. In France, black folks marched (and also tore up shyt).

Just wondering your thoughts on the tactic of marching. Is it a relic of the past? Is it something that can still have usefulness for us?

It's generational 'sour grapes'.

Marching is as valid today as a means to peaceful socio-political protest as any other time in history.

It is soooo typical to look for just another reason to not have to do anything.

Those who offer this reasoning are also typically those who have a long list of reasons to do nothing.

And....their positive responses are for solutions they are incapable of describing.

And...usually ends with something like...

'You know what I mean.'

I have to agree with Mr Chester. Why wouldn't marching be valid for today? There were no black teachers at my highschool, and a little lady walked outside the school everyday in protest for nearly the entire semester. Every morning she would show up with a sign questioning the schools blatant lack of black teachers. By the next semester we had 2 black teachers. One was an art teacher, and one was a coach. What she did ALONE was very powerful!

I think marching today is still a valid course of action. The anti-war marches that happened over the past 2 years have been very important. Obviously, it did not change any policies but it let the world know that we did not all support our government. I think that's the main purpose of a march- to let people know what we think. As far as changing policies, I think boycotting is much more effective. Hit them where it hurts-in the wallet.

That is exactly why I think marching is antiquated (unless you're going to open all kinds of whoop ass and take no prisoners). It may feel good, but what does it do? Every last one of us could leave our homes and march right up to the gate of the white house and George Bush et al would still go right on about their business. You can't march against a tyranical government.

Case closed.

The method is not in question.

The dedication is.

Our problem is that there is little left that will piss us off.

Eemember, everybody didn't march during the Civil Rights Movement.

Even then, there were those bad-mouthing, naysayers standing on the curb cursing those who marched.

And...they were crative in their naysaying.

I can't imagine what issue would put us 'in the streets'.

I actually posted a question yesterday on something similiar to this as to why we do not protest anymore like I have heard my folks speak about.. I dont care if we march, dont show up for work, go on a food strike, block the roads..there are some issues where we really need to make ourselves heard some way shape or form.. but like you said the dedication is the key.. patience is a virtue..
