UN Refuses to Compensate Cholera Victims in Haiti

Haiti’s cholera epidemic was caused by UN peacekeepers

AFRICANGLOBE – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says that the United Nations will not compensate families affected by the 2010 cholera outbreak in Haiti that has claimed thousands of lives, despite evidence that the organization was responsible for the outbreak. U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said that the UN cannot be held accountable due to an international agreement that grants the organization immunity in such cases.

The secretary-general phoned Haitian President Michel Martelly to inform him of the decision, but also promised the U.N.’s continued support in the treatment of the disease in Haiti.

In December, Ban announced that $2.2 billion in aid would be provided to Haiti over the next decade, though the sources of the funding were not fully identified.

“The secretary-general again expresses his profound sympathy for the terrible suffering caused by the cholera epidemic, and calls on all partners in Haiti and the international community to work together to ensure better health and a better future for the people of Haiti,” Nesirky said.

Multiple attempts to gain restitution for Haitians afflicted by cholera have largely fallen on deaf ears. American non-profit organization Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti filed a petition with the U.N. in November 2011, calling for a minimum of $100,000 for families that had suffered a death and $50,000 for each victim.

The Haitian government has recorded more than 7,750 cholera deaths and almost 500,000 cases of the disease.

The institute says it believes the U.N. is denying the claim due to the precedent it may set. IJDH Director Brian Concannon criticized the U.N.’s failure to take responsibility, where it instead denied the petition with a one-sentence reply.

“Our case is about the U.N. dumping contaminated sewage in Haiti’s waters that has caused thousands of deaths,” Concannon said. “Under this definition, any harm that the U.N. does to anybody would be a matter of policy.”

In the months after the 2010 earthquake, the U.N. deployed filthy Nepalese troops who are believed to have brought the bacterium from overseas. The U.N. has publicly stated that improper sanitation at one of its barracks may have been one of the sources that led to the outbreak, but refuses to take sole responsibility.

Looks like it.  But I think this denial is the beginning of the crumblin of the UN's human rights portion of its purpose.  And especially since it's their workers that CAUSED the disease in the first place....I think that's a little ARROGANT.  Just do.  Cuz really...what is the GOAL of the UN alway?  Is it to provide support to people in despair?  Even if and particularly if THEY are the ones responsible for adding onto their alway devestating "despair?"  Now...to me?  That don't make no gDamn sense!!!  They NEED to train their people sanitation techniques when they work in under developed human conditions.  What's WRONG with these people?  Well folks. this is the first brick of their dismantlement.   But!

It's hard for me to believe that the Cholera outbreak was merely coincidence in the first place; do you know how much money "charities" and government agencies can milk out of their governments and donors  for such a crisis?

And ER's statement is mostly correct, however, the only reason that it matters or that it can even touch Black people, is because it is Black people that refuse to accept or even acknowledge that fact and because it is Black people thatrefuse to unite and work toward common goals, and because it is Black people that have sold their souls to the very people that are bent on the destruction of the Black race, just for perceived acceptance ["tolerance"].

You know my sista that is a statement that I've said over and over that unfortunately for me...it is an automatic thought.  But!  I stopped saying it cuz I didn't want to be a broken record and most importantly it will NOT change that fact.  I have finally accepted it i.e. that black people are NOT passionate enough about HELPING each other as other cultures are.   It's like burying your loved one...you just have do your OWN thing.  And pray that maybe a ripple effect will emerge.  I will say it was the HARDEST thing that I ever had to do,,,and that is ACCEPT what I cannot change,  And understand that change come from within.  All these wealthy blacks all over the world who have the ability to eradicate this problem. The price of one designer's dress can start the process.  But!  The question continues:  Will black people EVER come to their OWN aid?    I can no longer attempt to reply with the same answer.  Cuz it breaks my heart to do so.  But!

Actually, Ms. Koco .... if the U.N. DID give up it's 'human rights' advocacy ... it wouldn't HAVE a purpose!!    Going into countries and trying to help them in humanitarian ways is the ONLY thing they (can) do even remotely successfully.

The UN has no "teeth" when it comes to 'world policing' or it's (intended) mission of "peace" or as a "peace-maker" .... so, the only thing they do that truly makes a difference is their work in poor countries ... providing food, medicine and health care ... having monitors that report back to "the world" (those who are listening, anyway) ...and TRY to help those less fortunate.

BUT ... for the most part, the U.S. is the biggest (financial) contributor to the U.N. ... and we don't pay all the money we pledge. (And neither does any other country).  The U.N. has no "army" ... and the various "troops" that make up their "force" (donated by the member-countries) generally have no weapons and do not get involved in armed conflicts.

They can't really MAKE any country DO anything!  There's supposed to be agreement between members that they will abide by "U.N. law" ... but as you can see ... that "agreement" is shaky at best ... and more powerful countries do what they want to do .. and don't do what they don't want to do ... anytime they feel like it.

So ... the ONLY and BEST thing that the U.N. does is in the way of "humanitarianism" .... and while they SHOULD be responsible for any bad or destructive things that are caused by whoever they send to other countries to supposedly "help" them out .... they really don't have the money to "fix" any problems they cause ... nor do they have any real "authority" to protect themselves or those under their control.

In a lot of ways there are a "name only" type of organization.  And the reason why I don't think they will "crumble" for this ... is that there's really nothing else they're good for except this kind of thing.  But ... they kinda "have to" do it (even when mistakes are made) .... 'cause there's nobody else to do it!!  Nor .. anything more they can do.
