The secret racist history of the Electoral College

In the early morning hours after Election Day, in 2012, Donald Trump tweeted:

trump-tweet

At the time Trump falsely believed that Mitt Romney had won the popular vote and lost the Electoral College. Trump’s English is a bit off; he appears to have meant that “the loser” won, not, as he had it, one. Trump later deleted the tweet, but others like this one remain on in his twitter feed:

Trump sure was right about that—as we’ve all too painfully seen now that Trump won the presidency while, if the current numbers hold, losing the popular vote.

The Electoral College is an embarrassment to our nation, and not just because it subverts the will of the voting majority. The Electoral College was designed to protect an evil American institution, slavery.

As Yale constitutional law professor Akhil Reed Amar writes in his latest book. The Constitution Today, “The Electoral College was designed at Philadelphia and was revised in the wake of the Jefferson-Adams-Burr election of 1800-1801 to advantage the slaveholding South.”

Many history books will tell you that the Electoral College was devised by the founders because they feared that the electorate was too ill-informed to make the decision themselves. But there’s plenty of evidence to show that protecting the institution of slavery—and not a fear of low-information voters—motivated the decision.

As Amar points out, Northern politician James Wilson made the case during the Constitutional Convention for directly electing the president. But Southern slave-owner and future president James Madison shot down Wilson’s idea on the grounds that southern states “could have no influence in the election on the score of Negroes.”

Madison was referring the infamous “three-fifths compromise,” which allowed the South to count each black slave as three-fifths of a person for determining how much representation that state got in the nation’s capital. If the president was directly elected by voters—a category that was limited at that time to white property-owning men—then the South would have less say in electing the president. Only by relying on the Electoral College, with its electors allocated using the skewed math of the three-fifths compromise, could the south maintain a strong voice in selecting the president and protect their interests. That’s why, as Amar writes, the Electoral College “was an integral part of the odious pro-slavery three-fifths compromise.”

Years later, it would become even more apparent that slavery was a key reason for preserving the Electoral College. After an Electoral College fiasco in the election of 1800—yes, the one you remember from the Hamilton soundtrack—Congress passed the 12th Amendment, revisiting the concept of an Electoral College.

Amar notes in his book that, by that point, the emergence of political parties in the United States had erased the problem of an uninformed electorate. With parties, voters did not have to decide between a roster of men whose values they were unfamiliar with. They could, instead, select candidates from two parties with defined visions for the country. But despite this fact, the Electoral College persisted. And why wouldn’t it? The extra Electoral College votes that the southern states had earned from the three-fifths compromise had given them just enough votes to make Thomas Jefferson, a slave-holding southerner, the president of the United States.

It took another 60 years and a civil war to abolish the institution of slavery. Who knows what it will take to get rid of slavery’s dogged cousin, the Electoral College.

They should have gotten RID of the electoral voting process a long time ago.  It really isn't fair.  And really doesn't give an accurate account of the individual voting process.  Time for a change.  But!

Especially when they are not legally bound to their vote reflecting the popular vote.

Besides, even the reason that it was concocted, has to make it Unconstitutional to begin with.

I agree and now because of this election they are seeing that it is really unfair and don't really represent the state its in.  I just heard Trump is attempting to ban lobbyists.  I wonder how that will also play in the next elections.  But nevertheless, I smell a rat.  I think that given that a lot of voters didn't get in including those mail in votes....they are attempting to ignore that mistake.  The controversy now is they didn't count all the votes for Hillary [ It says it's about a million votes for Hillary not considered ] and that one electoral college has yet to vote so Hillary's camp is asking them to vote for Hilliary...thinking this will change the dynamics of the outcome where Hilliary will be announced the true winner.  Now that she conceded,  I'm sure that's NOT gon happened.  But from the way things are going in the white house now ....anything can block this transition.  Let's cross finger with a hopeful wish that the dems get a back bone and start making some noise.  Cuz if the shoe was on other foot?  And Hillary had won?  Trump would be screaming RIGGED.  So I don't see why Hillary wont do the same.  We need a delay in the transfer of power.  Cuz I see the chaos already.  So.  What's a couple of months gon harm?  But!

and that's why your Presidential vote doesn't count!!!  It has been watered down to the lowest level imaginable.

Clinton got more votes that Trump and still lost....if they were running for Governor of a state, she would have one!!

They also pad the numbers in states by adding federal prisoners.  Prisoners can't vote so they count in the population and not in the ballot count.  States with the highest prison pops??  Ohio, Florida, Texas, and California.....aren't these the same states that the parties are always fight over to win the POTUS???

Yep.  As why I'm beginning to believe that Hillary dropped the ball in this election in several other ways aside from being betrayed by the 53 percent white women who voted for Trump and the hip hoppers who didn't vote at all.  Her arrogance prevented her from hitting the pavement like she should have KNOWING about those electoral votes spewing.  In addition, Obama's first presidential win earned more than double the electoral votes [365 to 173] against McCain....way before 8 pm. pacific standard time on election day ....and so his presidency was announced way before 11 p.m.  To me?  She didn't due diligence.  She didn't do enough.  And her time management for this campaign sucked.  As was Obama the underbelly who won? So is Trump.  Merely because he USED the same technique [except for his racist stance] as Obama to gain the win:  he started early.  He started the day Obama went into office by challenging the legitimacy of Obama's birth certificate.  That was a ploy to get the attention of the American people.  So.   Trump?  Spent eight years on the prowl.  Gathering Hillary weaknesses and covering up his.

So with Hillary?  This was her SECOND time around to ensure this presidency....and she failed miserably by the two groups she thought she had in the bag-but clearly didn't.  She is still shocked by that. And if she would have started EARLY with the hip hoppers in mending a way to convince them to vote.....hit those states that she ignored until the last minute.....and kept  the positive vision of the America life in the voter's face....[the way Obama did] every. day?  It wouldn't have MATTERED what Trump did to discredit her cuz she would have time to nail his ass and would have had all the votes she needed in the bag waaaaaaaaay before 8 p.m. my time.  This racist centuries old electoral system is out of touch and is why we need to get rid of it cuz it's not fair and not accurate.  This loss should never happened and error should be a LESSON to study for years to come.  But!
