The Role of the Roman Catholic Church in Slavery

The Vatican banner

Some historians argue that if churches had used their power, the Atlantic slave trade might have never occurred. By the same logic, others argue that the Catholic church and Catholic missionaries could have also helped to prevent the colonization and brutality of colonialism in Africa. However, history shows that the Catholic church did not oppose the institution of slavery until the practice had already become infamous in most parts of the world. In most cases, the churches and church leaders did not condemn slavery until the 17th century. The five major countries that dominated slavery and the slave trade in the New World were either Catholic, or still retained strong Catholic influences including: Spain, Portugal, France, and England, and the Netherlands.

Slavery itself, considered as such in its essential nature, is not at all contrary to the natural and divine law, and there can be several just titles of slavery, and these are referred to by approved theologians and commentators of the sacred canons … It is not contrary to the natural and divine law for a slave to be sold, bought, exchanged or given”.- Pope Pius IX

HISTORY

The actions of the Catholic church towards slavery proved to be insincere. History shows that the first extensive shipment of black Africans that would later become known as the Transatlantic slave trade, was initiated at the request of Bishop Las Casas and authorized by Charles V in 1517. Ironically, Catholic missionaries such as the Jesuits, who also owned slaves, worked to alleviate the suffering of Native American slaves in the New World. While showing mercy to Native Americans, the church placed some books critical of slavery on the Index of Forbidden Books by the Holy Office between 1573-1826. Capuchin missionaries were excommunicated for calling for the emancipation of black slaves in the Americas .

At various points the Catholic church would appease its followers and their conscience by trying to find a middle ground. Because Catholics considered baptized slaves in full communion with the Church, as opposed to some non-Catholic colonies, masters could not kill a slave without facing murder charges. If able, slaves had a right to purchase their freedom, referred to as an act of manumission. Slaves could not be worked on Sundays or on the thirty Catholic feast days, guaranteeing some days of leisure. Slaves could also join lay Catholic fraternal organizations alongside free blacks. All of these protections, perhaps, provided slaves in Catholic territories with a degree of protection from the harshness of the dehumanizing experience of slavery. Amazingly, Catholic Bishops would publicly condemn slavery but privately allowed it to continue in colonies that economically enriched the church.

Finally, in 1965 the Second Vatican Council declared that forced slavery was an infamy that dishonored the Creator and was a poison in society.

CATHOLIC CHURCH TIMELINE OF CRITICAL POINTS IN HISTORY

YEARCHURCH’S POSITION
362 ADThe local Council at Gangra in Asia Minor excommunicates anyone encouraging a slave to despise his master or withdraw from his service. (Became part of Church Law from the 13th to 20th centuries).
354- 430 ADSt. Augustine teaches that the institution of slavery derives from God and is beneficial to slaves and masters.
650 ADPope Martin I condemns people who teach slaves about freedom or who encourage them to escape.
1179 ADThe Third Lateran Council imposes slavery on those helping the Saracens.
1226 ADThe legitimacy of slavery is incorporated in the Corpus Iuris Canonici, promulgated by Pope Gregory IX which remained official law of the Church until 1913. Canon lawyers worked out four “just titles” for holding slaves: slaves captured in war, persons condemned to slavery for a crime; persons selling themselves into slavery, including a father selling his child; children of a mother who is a slave.
1224- 1274 ADSt.Thomas Aquinas defends slavery as instituted by God in punishment for sin, and justified as being part of the ‘right of nations’ and natural law. Children of a slave mother are rightly slaves even though they have not committed personal sin!
1452 ADPope Nicholas V issued the papal bull Dum Diversas on 18 June, 1452. It authorizes (King) Alfonso V of Portugal to reduce any “Saracens (Muslims) and pagans and any other unbelievers to perpetual slavery.

The same pope wrote the bull Romanus Pontifex on January 5, 1455 to the same Alfonso. As a follow-up to the Dum diversas, it extended to the Catholic nations of Europe dominion over discovered lands during the Age of Discovery. Along with sanctifying the seizure of non-Christian lands, it encouraged the enslavement of native, non-Christian peoples in Africa and the New World.

1493 ADPope Alexander VI authorizes the King of Spain to enslave non-Christians of the Americas who are at war with Christian powers.
1494 ADPope Alexander VI, in the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas, divides the known New World between the two countries. As there was a need to locate a group to work in areas where the supply of indigenous labor was insufficient, to sustain their colonies, Spain and Portugal imported Africans.
1500- 1850 ADTwelve million Africans arrived in the Americas to toil as slaves. The vast majority of these slaves worked in the Catholic colonies of Spain and Portugal
1548 ADPope Paul III confirms the right of clergy and laity to own slaves
1866 ADPope Pius IX declares:
Slavery itself, considered as such in its essential nature, is not at all contrary to the natural and divine law, and there can be several just titles of slavery, and these are referred to by approved theologians and commentators of the sacred canons … It is not contrary to the natural and divine law for a slave to be sold, bought, exchanged or given”.

As I said earlier the bible, talmud and qu'ran.  Are just manuals to justify SLAVERY.  It is part of the patriarchal rule.   And sex slavery came before domestic slavery.  And eunuchism came as a result of men being held captive from war....except in Asia where Chinese/Japanese men willingly castrated themselves to join the military....and that's where homosexuality thrived.   But!

White people are INSANE. No one knows where these creeps originated. You tube says they're not human. They're forever kissing dogs and every other animal they own. Watch National Geographic for a day. Hit those veterinarian shows. They'd kiss a Grizzly, if it would let them and own one too. I've seen so many arms up cows' asses, feces flowing out by the buckets full/boots full, castrations, calves born, yanked from wombs; hamburgers and steaks are no longer appealing to me in any shape nor form whatsoever.

I hear ya!  There are so many theories about where whitefolks come from.....and most of it isn't human.  Like the neanderthal theory...which I believe is closer to the truth than anything else.  The lizard theory I'm not sure of....cuz animals...[especially reptiles] and human can't procreate.  And there is a lot of massa's blood/DNA in us from slavery...and that could not happen if they were lizards.  So as you say...who knows where these freak creeps come from.  And since they are always telling us to go back to Africa...they need to take their own advice and go back to wherever it is they came from.  But!

@  Sista Sunnubian.  Good info  They need to plaster this on the Catholic Church wall [for blacks to see].  So African Americans can DECIDE whether or not if they REALLY wanna be Catholics let alone Christians.  The only good thing about Christianity is it saved women and children from being sexually mutilated [FGM, castration] and held the mother Mary in high regard even though all the angels were deemed male until later on in the I think the 15th century.  Other than that?  It's been the slave manual for Africans to justify why they needed to be loyal to massa and stay in their place.  Void is the information about how these people became slaves in the first place.  And void is the humility and compassion for another human being RIGHT to live their life in freedom.  And it's slick how they incorporated not allowing the slave to question moral compass or the questioning the common sense of these biblical rules...and any slave who did...was MURDERED.    But!

Catholicism is a biggger problem for Africans on the Continent and Black people throughout the diaspora in places other than America.

I say a 'bigger' problem for them, because, unlike with African America, the Catholic Church [the same entity that sanctioned enslaving Black people's ancestors (in perpetuity)  and for stealing Africans' land and wealth] has a stronghold in those places.

But, since the majority of Africans, just like Black people throughout the diaspora, do not know their own history, the same people that tortured, enslaved, and condemned Black people's ancestors to "perpetual slavery", and murdered Black people's ancestors, and who are responsible for initiating the theft of Africans' land, natural resources, [therefore wealth] and who has coveted Africans' Legacy [and claimed it as their own], are able to now go into Africa and Black nations as "saviors" and "allies", when in fact, they are really doing no more than [just like "Islam"], keeping the "natives" pacified[i.e., unconscious] with the Divide-And-Conquer tactic of "religion".

I agree my sista.  It is a bigger problem associated with other problems in-house that Africans and African America refuse to act on.  But in my view one of the biggest problems we have?  Is refusing to take that mental chain off our brains.  I know that it's hundreds of years of conditioning but we have the ability to read and write and use our cognitive capacity to move forward and become our own heroes.  But when you have been stuck in a mental pattern for generations....it HARD for many to break the pattern even though they see with their eyes what is going on. Which is as you say a divide and conquer tactic-which is working very well in America with African Americans.   Off topic:  That's why I am always leery when other countries like China pretends to go into partnership with Africa....it's hidden agenda.  As it has always been a hidden agenda for the catholic church...which continues to deny pedophilia within its ranks.  That's also troubling and for me?  Make me very suspicious about their real motives.  But!

There's lots of THEIR blood flowing through our veins from SLAVERY, and let's not forget ever, there's lots of OUR blood flowing through THEIR VEINS from slavery and every thing else that occurred in this country. They're always FUCKING black something or another; they just don't talk about the situation. Their blood's FLOWING through everything breathing probably. Fucking's #2 on their brain after killing and slaughtering; #3's MONEY. That's it with these WHATEVERS.

I see folks on TV and can't tell what ethnicity they belong to for 20 minutes or so and there's still no guarantee I've gotten it correct. Nothing's funnier than a blond, blue eyed joker with a pair of pink soup coolers. Some Caucasoid with nappy hair Imus flapped his almost dead lips about. What afflicts us, they have the very same afflictions. Just like the Poodles, Dred-locked whatever they're called, wavy haired dogs. The hair of the dogs is the same as the humans. Just depends on the breed. Depends on the racial ethnicity. Still dogs; still humans.

White folks, you can cause some serious regurgitation at times. You're an oddity of life, big time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you ever decide to leave for the whitest country  in the whole wide world (Iceland?), don't forget to grab your Ignorant Ugly Billionaire, Mitch McConnell and Pat Buchannan. Put them on Plane #1. See ya!!

P.S.  When you arrive and have been there awhile, try doing that Polar Bear Plunge in the cold waters you love so much, may your God or Satan part the seas to let you set your swarmy souls and all the rest of us FREE.
