The Myth Of The Absent Black Fathers

Black Fathers Defy Stereotypes e1387737259434 photo

Survey show that Black fathers who lived with their kids are more involved with them than any other group

AFRICANGLOBE – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published new data on the role that American fathers play in parenting their children. Most of the CDC’s previous research on family life — which the agency explores as an important contributor to public health and child development — has focused exclusively on mothers. But the latest data finds that the stereotypical gender imbalance in this area doesn’t hold true, and dads are just as hands-on when it comes to raising their kids.

That includes Black American fathers.

In fact, the results “defy stereotypes about Black fatherhood” because the CDC found that Black fathers are moreinvolved with their kids on a daily basis than dads from other racial groups:

In some cases, the differences between Black fathers and White or Latino fathers weren’t statistically significant. Nonetheless, the fact that there’s no dramatic drop-off for African-American fathers is still a surprising revelation for some people.

Considering the fact that “Black fatherhood” is a phrase that is almost always accompanied by the word “crisis” in U.S. society, it’s understandable that the CDC’s results seem innovative. But in reality, the new data builds upon years of research that’s concluded that hands-on parenting is similar among dads of all races. There’s plenty of scientific evidence to bust this racially-biased myth.

The Pew Research Center, which has tracked this data for years, consistently finds no big differences between White and Black fathers. Gretchen Livingston, one of the senior researchers studying family life at Pew, wasn’t at all surprised by the new CDC data. “Blacks look a lot like everyone else,” she pointed out.

Although Black fathers are more likely to live separately from their children — the statistic that’s usually trotted out to prove the parenting “crisis” — many of them remain just as involved in their kids’ lives. Pew estimates that 67 percent of Black dads who don’t live with their kids see them at least once a month, compared to 59 percent of White dads and just 32 percent of Hispanic dads.

And there’s compelling evidence that number of Black fathers living apart from their kids stems from structural systems of inequality and poverty, not the unfounded assumption that Black American men somehow place less value on parenting. Equal numbers of Black fathers and White dads tend to agree that it’s important to be a father who provides emotional support, discipline, and moral guidance. There’s one area of divergence in the way the two groups approach their parental responsibilities: Black dads are even more likely to think it’s important to financially provide for their children.

Dr. Roberta L. Coles, a sociology professor at Marquette University, has also researched Black fathers for nearly a decade. Her most well-known work includes The Best Kept Secret: Single Black Fathers photo and The Myth of the Missing Black Father: The Persistence of Black Fatherhood in America. photo. Like Pew, Coles has also found that even though Black dads may be less likely to marry their kids’ mothers, they typically remain involved in raising their children.

In an interview this week, Coles explained that she’s invested in continuing to challenge the prevailing stereotypes in this area. “It’s important to get it out there that that’s not the whole picture,” Coles noted. “People need to know there are men out there trying to do their best.”

That’s the same reason that Kenrya Rankin Naasel recently published Bet On Blacka collection of essays in which Black American women share their stories of being raised by great fathers. “For years, we’ve all been bombarded with statistics that scream our men are not up to the important task of fathering,” she explained in a recent interview about her project. “Ultimately, I hope that Bet On Black challenges the rhetoric about our families and changes the conversation to one that celebrates rather than denigrates.”

Despite the concrete evidence to dispel the prevailing assumptions about Black fathers, the conversation is still dominated by headlines like “What’s the Problem with Black Fathers?” and “The Myth of the Missing Black Father” President Obama has drawn some criticism for repeatedly delivering speeches about the importance of fatherhood to non-White mainly Black audiences. And this past fall, when Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s two-year-old son tragically passed away, the White media wasted no time falling back on all the stereotypes about irresponsible Black fathers.

The resistance to the research in the field may speak to the fact that racially-motivated stereotypes are particularly hard to break out of. For instance, despite the wealth of evidence disproving Americans’ assumptions about welfare recipients, the deeply-ingrained myth of the “welfare queen” remains.

This is good news!  And it always touches my heart when I see a black man with his child and behaving like a parent. I try to reward that with compliments or whatever I  have when I see it.  There have been several times when I am driving down the street and I see a young man walking with his kid and if I could, I would stop em.  Most times the men think I'm crazy until I pull out my bag of tricks and give the child something to play with.  [as a teacher] I always keep those type of things in my car or purse-just in case there is a crying child in a grocery store or wherever and the parent is having a hard time.  But here lately I stopped doing that as much...cuz some black people make me sooooooooo mad in how they treat their children-they are NOT raising them,  So I don't reward bad behavior. And recently I've seen more bad behavior from young parents than good behavior.  Nevertheless, I just love hearing this.  And is testimony that you cannot BELIEVE everything you see or hear from the media regarding our black men.  All I have left to say is....Hal. La. Lu. Yer.    But

The CDC study this article is based on is a complete farce. It only accounts for the father's responses instead of the child's responses. Never-married black males "father" children at a rate of 5 to 1 of whites (Per last US Census). This study asked black fathers questions like: "Have you eaten with your child in the last 4 weeks? Have you read to your child in the last 4 weeks? etc." All the father had to do was to eat with one of his children or read to one of his children in that time span to offer a favorable response. Therefore, never-married black males were 5X as likely to give a favorable response. Also, the 4 week time frame is kind of loose. You could theoretically be in jail and have one meal with one of your 10 children in a 4 week period and be counted a good father in this study. It's a joke. Look at the statistics of the perils children face by not having 2 parents in the home, then you'll see the bleak truth of black fathers in our society. Your not going to find real change in the black community unless you start acknowledging the truth.

Oh, stop hating; and stop assuming that because a man is not married to his child's mother or is not longer living in the same home with his ex-wife and his kids, he has nothing to do with his own children.

The truth is, the children of White ex-wives fair no better than children of Black single mothers where father involvement is concerned, and that is a fact and a truth that America tries to keep hidden and constantly lie or lie by omission about.

First they tried to spread the lie that children of Black single mothers didn't know their fathers, and since that has been debunked, then they started trying to spread the propaganda that Black fathers don't spend time with their child(ren).

African American fathers are no different than any other race fathers in America, the situation and/or relationship they have with their child(ren) is all over the spectrum from heavily involved whether married to the mother or not or living in the same household not, to no involvement whatsoever, whether married to the mother or not or living the same household or not.

It really all boils down to the type man the child(ren)'s father is, his character, his integrity, and whether he chooses to not put himself before his own child(ren); [regardless of race, class, or circumstance].

It's not hating to state facts. You should never fear the truth. Countless studies show a one parent home is perilous to a child's well being. Here's one: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr074.pdf

If you'd like to present actual facts to the contrary, I'd be glad to look at them. But so far, it just looks like you're speaking from emotion and not reality.

I just gave you a study from the CDC. The exact same government org that published the study this article uses to make the claim that black fathers spend more time nurturing their kids. It sounds to me that you think that any facts that don't agree with your narrow view of the world are "racist propaganda". Things won't change in the black community until you recognize that the problem is from within. You act like the lack of a father in the home has no affect on the black community. If you believe that then you're hopeless.

Well it's a good thing I'm none of these. Please name one thing I've done that would indicate the contrary. This article references a government study and makes wildly incorrect conclusions from the results. A fact of the matter is single parent homes have adverse affects on children. Another fact about the matter is that the black community has the highest rate of one parent homes. Another fact is that the the black community is below the poverty line at non-proportional rates. Pointing this out is not racism or hatred. If you truly want to help the black community, you need to acknowledge this instead of pretending that the black community does not have an unproportional level of dysfunctional families. Until this is addressed, prosperity will be fleeting at best.

Racism is the notion that one race is superior or inferior to another. I don't think that at all. I think blacks are equal in every way. Therefore I am not a racist. Nor am I going to stoop to insults (or font changes). You don't even know my race. However, I will agree with one thing you've said. I am Mr. Reasonable. I do use reason. Scummy racist humor? I don't think anything's funny about watching a large portion of society grow up in single parent home  (or with grandma.) , and not having one shred of hope at success.

Tell me this. What do you think is going to happen to the black community as technology advances? Did you know Wal-Mart is ten years away from using robots to stock shelves. They won't need cashiers to check people out either. You'll just roll the buggy out the store and RFID scanners will detect what's in the buggy and bill your account. Robots will be flipping burgers and picking up trash also. Basically every job done by the poor and much of the middle class will eventually be automated. What's going to happen to the black community unless it makes real changes and develops the skills needed for success in a technological future?

If you believe that then you're hopeless.

HATERS, RACISTS, SELF-HATERS AND THOSE BRAINWASHED BY RACIST PROPAGANDA WILL BE BLOCKED.

Stop it,  Birdshit!  MCB has banned you from this site. Everyone sees through your disgusting racism. Here you are playing the Mr. Reasonable game soon to be followed by your scummy racist humor. Aren’t you unhappy enough being a brat in your own family?  Stop jerking off and amusing yourself by being an ugly little  pest here!! Stop it!!

Don't hate the messenger.

I just gave you a study from the CDC. The exact same government org that published the study this article uses to make the claim that black fathers spend more time nurturing their kids. Brat in my own family? Let me guess, you think I'm some sort of silver spoon trust fund baby. Guess again. I grew up dirt poor and so did my wife. Neither of our families ever took a dime of welfare. My wife worked hard while I went to school and then I worked while she went to school. I'm now a CPA and she's a pharmacist. I have a strong, close knit family and beautiful daughter. Here's a picture. I know it must be nice for you to hang onto the notion that I'm some kind of yuppie that never worked a day in my life. But no, I've worked from the ground up and built a great life for myself. Now my daughter, she will be spoiled.

What an idiot!!!!! You are obviously unhappy, little Birdshit, corrections officer, CPA, phony whatever, everyone here plus the moderator does not want you here. Everyone, no exceptions, agrees that you are a brat with an obvious racist attitude.  Stop it, GTFOH, Birdshit!
