The Digital Divide

My wife is a Math/Science teacher in a inner-city school district and in recent years they have received grants that puts a computer in every classroom. I have had the opportunity to watch some of these kids on the computers and was amazed how well they knew the in and outs of a PC. If other shool districts throughout the country can do the same I think we will be ok.

I personally know of Black private schools and inner-city schools in my area that have intro to computer classes starting at the elementary level. Therefore, I think we (the Black community) are progressing in this area.

Yes, we have access to high speed connectivity in my community. Thankfully. I create and like to view heavy graphics so, any speed less than cable would be nerve wrecking to me.

My sister and I talked about this recently. Fortunately, I'm a computer geek and we own 2 computers. My children have been using the computer since 4 years old. They are throughly familiar with it and can run simple applications and of course play games. They have been playing on computers for educational purposes since pre-k. I think more elementary schools are incorporating computers into the classroom. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it has been made a mandatory part of the curriculum, at the high school level.

Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society
