For decades, the hair care industry in the Black community has been dominated by Asian entrepreneurs and larger corporations like Strength of Nature and L’Oréal. Both brands have had a strong hold on the “ethnic” beauty market especially after acquiring numerous brands from Motions to Softsheen-Carson. That is, until the natural hair movement gained momentum and brought about a wave of Black entrepreneurs looking to reclaim the Billion dollar industry. With African Americans purchasing nine times more (repeat: NINE TIMES MORE) beauty and grooming products than any other ethnic group, yet owning less than 1% of that market share, it’s only right that there is a major shift in ownership from hair care products to the beauty supply stores notoriously owned by Asians. Thank you for this invaluable list my brotha. This is exactly why I am going back old school. Do my own nails, eyebrows....wear twists, puff, naturals, and braids...even will wear wigs before patronizing Asian stores that haven been racist and unnecessary profiling black customers every since that young black girl shot and killed was over a small bottle of orange juice by an older female Asian merchant-who eventually went back to South Korea. We should never be a slave to our own beauty. We have it all within. We don't need them. I'm glad you posted all these black beauty supply houses. It will be good to go there for our hair and skin needs. And if we begin to do more things old school? We will be able to save our money and spend it on basic things that are starting to become very expensive. We have to change lanes and not allow merchants to continue to pimp us. One of our strengths is our numbers....the money power we have regardless of the climate of society...we still have plenty of power...but let's not waste it on folks who have no respect for us. We must learn to respect our power and our money. Remember a couple of generations ago, we as blacks were indeed one of the healthiest people in the world..until drugs, alcohol, poverty, violence began to poison our culture. But! We still have those survival genes...however.
And it is up to us to be the best by passing this torch of greatness...and we can do that effectively by taking better care of ourselves, respecting each other as a culture/race and slowing down. Building up what we have and preparing for a long haul. Right now? Many of us were moving just too fast...forgetting what is truly important for all of us in the black community.... as why this election win got away from us a bit. I know it's sounds like I'm babbling but this all ties together in terms of how we were always able to maintain unity whatever the horrific struggle. We did it by going back to the basics. Other cultures can't do this. But! We can and have. Now is the time to do it again. Cuz it's important NOT to be a slave to anything massa and his boys have. And since some immigrants seem to think we are going to continue to buy their product and succumb to their insults and attacks out of product desperation....they need to see just exactly who we are...and how who we are historically enabled them to come this country acquire freedom and benefit as a result of our human/civil right movement. But they've been ungrateful about this for too long while at the same time bring their racism to our community. They take our money and then treat us like shit. Well... no more. But!
