DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Senegal is offering free land to Haitians wishing to 'return to their origins' following this week's devastating earthquake, which has destroyed the capital and buried thousands of people beneath rubble.

Senegal's octogenarian President Abdoulaye Wade told a meeting of his advisers that Haitians are the sons and daughters of Africa, because the country was founded by slaves, including some believed to have come from Senegal...

Most Haitians come from Benin.... a fact expressed through the religion, culture and something that Benin has openly acknowledged when the government and local leaders gave an apology to Haitian people about 10 years ago. I'm trying to figure how Senegal figures this? Seems more of like a posturing gesture to me rather than a serious proposal. Unfortunately, something too many African nations do when it comes to the African Diaspora in the West.
Posturing in terms of past talk regarding giving people in the African Diaspora dual citizenship and land. Very, very, very little of this has come to fruition. This is the same type of promises that other African nations have made and largely nothing has come of it. Most of the time, with the notable exception of South Africa, its nothing but political posturing. Sorry to burst your bubble Sister Fine.

If the USA were to make a similar offer, would that also be viewed as posturing, rather than a serious proposal?

It seems to me that one cannot determine whether the offer is mere posturing or not until after observing what happens when Haitians take them up on the offer.

If the offer is indeed not genuine, those who choose to take them up on the offer will find that out soon enough.
