For the last several weeks, the government of Israel and large swaths of its citizenry have embarked upon a merciless crusade of “ethnic cleansing,” the likes of which has not been seen since the Bosnian conflict in the 1990's. The targets of this particular atrocity are not Israel's traditional whipping boy, Palestinian refugees or even Palestinian inmates of what can only be described as the open-air prison of Gaza on the West Bank. The victims this time around are illegal African immigrants mainly from South Sudan, Eritrea, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and other sub-Saharan countries. Even Chinese and Filipino immigrants have been targeted.
At last count, these people numbered around 60,000 souls, or about 0.9 percent of the Israeli population. The Israeli government, media, and citizenry do not refer to them as “illegal immigrants," however, but rather as “infiltrators.”
In Tel Aviv, on April 27, 2012, anti-African immigrant sentiment exploded into arson attacks when white Israeli “demonstrators” firebombed apartment buildings housing African immigrants. One apartment contained a mother and her four children. That was just the beginning.
“Blacks out!” That was the rallying cry of about 1,000 Israelis, also in Tel Aviv, less than a month later, on May 23, 2012. Shouts of “infiltrators get out of our homes,” and “Death to the Sudanese” filled the air as the white mob turned to open assaults and attacks with sticks, bricks, and stones against anybody unfortunate enough to be within striking distance and wearing dark skin.
And, as recently as June 4, 2012, in Jerusalem, yet another white mob set fire to an apartment building filled with Eritrean refugees, injuring several dozen people.
Amazingly, the Israeli government's response has been to support the rioters and their demands. President Netanyahu has himself referred to the refugees as “infiltrators,” and publicly stated that the African immigrants were a direct threat to “the social fabric of society” and the “Jewish and democratic character of the country.”
Authorities have actually begun rounding up immigrants for deportation and have promised severe punishment for any Israelis who might be sympathetic to the Africans and attempt to help them. A 30-foot high fence between Israel and Egypt is under construction to stem the flow of asylum seekers from that direction. And, a new law allows the Israeli government to imprison African asylum seekers – including women and children – for as long as three years without charging them with a crime.
As many as 25,000 illegal immigrants have been slated for deportation. Thousands of others are being herded into open-air detention centers (concentration camps?) for future deportation processing.
Why is this happening – especially in a country which prides itself as being the only democracy in the entire region? And, what is or should be the United States' response to this obvious and blatant affront to its stated goal of upholding human rights worldwide?
The answer to the first question is clear: Pure, unadulterated white supremacist-based racism. Oh...? You doubt that? Okay, then explain why recently thousands of white Russian non-Jewish illegal immigrants were granted work permits while only one out of 4,000 African applicants for the same permits was allowed.
And as to the United States' position? Seems pretty obvious that the United States government is poised to seriously ignore the whole situation. Have you heard or read any of this in the “mainstream” media? On government websites? And, when was the last time President Obama or his campaign mentioned anything about Israel beyond awarding the "Medal of Freedom" to former Israeli Prime Minister (and current President) Shimon Peres?
Do not expect Obama to criticize anything that Israel does during this election season. He is fully aware of the power of the American Israeli Political Action Committee in propagandizing and raising money against any American politician who is even slightly critical of Israel. Ask former President Jimmy Carter about this and I'm sure he'll give you an earful.
