On behalf of the sister I'd like to point out that I recently read where her managers or other handlers were upset that she wanted to go "bare" faced in public... the cry was that her skin was not evenly colored... so as a protest she has begun exaggeratedly appearing as a clown to thumb her nose at them...

this is unconfirmed however....


because I also heard an interview by Wyclef Jean this morning where he said she is bipolar and needs someone around her to intervene....

Lauryn_2Lauryn Hill has been performing around lately and the reviews are mixed. Some say she sounds on point and focused while others say she is still a few cards short of a full deck. This lovely and accomplished woman who brought us a brilliant solo debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, is looking a little less than lovely these days.

I understand stage makeup and that you need to wear more when you are on stage but this much and this bright....no no no Ms. Lauryn. I prefer the polished confident and sexy look of yesterday. I am not really sure what is going on with her but I am going to need her to get it together because we need more brilliant singer songwriters like her.

I am hoping that she is going through some kind of phase and that the music will speak for itself. But for now...not pretty.

I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt... and considering this below, what you mentioned sounds quite plausible... It also vibes with what she has expressed in the past about not wanting to be overly concerned about her appearance...

Wow... but seriously.. SOMETHING is clearly goin' on with Ms. Hill. Anyone can see it. I am hopeful...she'll see it too. She is an extremely brilliant and talent artist. She will definitely be in my prayers tonite. These young women...young mothers...today...I am very CONCERNED.

I got out of my nice, warm comfortable bed in the middle of the night because, well. . .

I can't get down with his movies either. They just don't do it for me. (As if a man in drag is supposed to be inherently funny.) I watched an episode of "House of Payne" and wasn't feelin' that to much either; it was mediocre, at best.

Black America has LEARNED to embrace the stereotypical mascline Black WOMAN portrayed by effiminate Black men i.e. Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Flip Wilson, and now Tyler Perry. It seems the positive depiction of strong Black men in movies are FAR and in-between[and historical]...although we do have Denzel, Wesley and Fishburne who are SOMETIMES given STRONG positive manly roles. I've seen one of his movies. That was by accident when I was visiting family.

I've refused to watch any of his movies since then. Not my style.

See this is why I like AA.org, even though we don't always agree, more often than not, 'yall make me feel less 'unique' in thought. Tyler Perry is mind numbing. I hate the brothers dressed up to mock sisters thing too.

I, too, feel the same way as do you. No Black man (no matter who) should never, ever play or dress the part of a woman. When Wesley Snipes dressed in 'drag' in a movie, I was shocked at this 'macho' brother playing such a part. When Richard play a part in his bio where he dressed as a woman, I was hurt. There are Brothers who told the white promoters or producers to take their 'roles of Black men dressing in female clothing' and shove it. This is because they refuse to lower themselves in such a role that is demeaning. Tyler Perry, (who appears to be a true 'Black' man) makes movies where he dresses and plays the part of a woman which makes you wonder where this brothers head is and what is his 'true' sexual preference. I am not a fan of most Black comics, rap, and hip hop artist but I have yet to see one wearing womens clothes or dressing in 'drag'. When I see Arsenal Hall in movies where he wears female clothes, I am still trying to figure out what this brother is. I am not a bigot when it comes to homosexuality but I do feel that those in the 'closet' should stop hiding and come on with it. I really hate to prejudge a brother (or sister) but come on; a spade is a spade is a spade. Black men have to stand up and be counted on as men. There is no 'in-between'. I want my niece to hook up with my daughter's language arts teacher. He's sooOOOoooooOOooo cute and he's smart, mature for his age, has a kick butt sense of humor and nice teeth.

He's also a hardworking, spiritual man and he cares about his community (the black community). Heck, I'd date him myself but at 26 he's just too damn young for me. . .it would be like dating my little brother.

But he'll be a nice addition to my extended family. hehehehehehe

Not only does it emasculate the men(who are not normally effeminate)... But it dehumanizes the image of the African female they are mocking and deminishes this image into a negative stereotype. Basicually, it knocks out 2 birds with 1 stone serving the interests of white supremacy.

I was just having this convo with someone the other day... I AGREE!!!

I'm glad to know that I am not alone!!

I saw part of the movie.... and I must say that at least he wasn't dressed in drag....

but I didn't like it... I found the script way too simplistic.... I was actually mouthing the next lines of some actors.....because the script was extremely childishly predictable....

it was quite silly...

but...

it has better motives than most movies....

and the Christian references were very much in your face... but not too overbearing...

I had to stop. . .

I had to get out of the car and walk. . .

it was starting to get windy and in a dreamy sort of way, the weather fit my mood. . .

just 30 minutes before I had received a call from a friend telling me that the cancer she fought almost 3 years ago. . .was back with a vengeance.

This time the cancer had invaded her brain, lungs, and uterus.

Damn. . .

I felt like I had been sucker punched as I listened to her intently. . .she seemed to have a positive attitude and there were no tears in her voice that I could tell. . .

Friend: I'm gonna beat this

me: I know you will and I'm there for you whenever you need me

Friend: keep me in your prayers, ok? I don't want to die. I want to live to see my daughter graduate from college. . .I want to travel with D (her significant other) and I want to retire someday and enjoy my retirement money.

{laughter}

Me: yeah, all that planning & investing for retirement and we have way too many years left to mention. . .I can only believe that you'll do all the things you planned & more.

What I didn't say was how guilty I felt ... cause I hadn't been such a good friend lately. Seems I am always too busy to visit, too busy to talk. . .too busy to . . .

My heart hurt. . .

There was nothing more to say [for now]. . .

It was at this point that I decided to stop; pulling over to park my car at the first opportunity. I needed to walk, I needed to think. So I parked the car and got out. . .taking my camera with me. I could feel the wind against my face, causing me to look up. It was cold. The wind was blowing hard, bending & twisting tree branches all around. It was such a twilight zone moment that I expected to hear the [twilight zone] theme song at any moment. I took my camera out of it's case and proceeded to snap pictures of the trees. I wanted to capture this moment; this feeling of numbness.

And I couldn't help but think of another time in my life. . .another time & space when yet another friend had fought a similar battle with cancer. The cancer was discovered in her early twenties and she fought the good fight all the way to the ripe old age of 30. . .

{sigh}

I took a deep breath and began to walk; snapping pictures along the way. . .right now I would give myself over to the moment. . .allowing myself to remember Teresa.

The trees. . .

Sometimes, as I think about it. . .life really sucks.

My boss just called me to tell me that she is giving me a pay-raise of a little more than $800/yr. When I thanked her, she seemed hurt that I was doing back flips of joy ... $800/yr? That's not even enough to stop brown bagging it.

But I suppose I should be happy, it is $800 more than I would'a had.

Hello, hello, hello! Before I get into this I just want you to know that this one may be alittle long. (smile) These last two weeks I have been on a promotional tour for MARRIED. 9
states, 25 private screenings, several TV and radio appearances; all inabout 12 days! And let me tell you--it has taken a toll. - I have been told that since I'm not in a dress this movie wouldn't work.
- I have been called a racist (among other things) because there are noother races represented in this film (that's not something that I everthink about...I just want to tell a good story). - I have been lied to, tricked, deceived.
There was one reporter, who I was told was coming from New York to do afavorable piece. She sat in my office and smiled and asked me all kindsof questions. When the article came out it was all out of context and all
about how my movies are the worst thing that have ever happened to Blackpeople and that I am doing nothing but modern day step-and-fetch it, andthat I'm just trying to get rich. I was shocked and quite upset by the
trickery. Not only by her but also the things that were said about thismovie in print were so awful. Several Hollywood trades didn't even mentionthat MARRIED was a contender for number one. They thought that the number
one would be George Clooney's movie or Mark Walbrurg's movie. Now I had never ever read any of this stuff in the past, but for somereason I felt lead to read it this time. The venom and disdain for what I
do was apparent. And speaking of venom, what they did to Janet wasunacceptable. Janet, who was under no obligation at all to promote thismovie, sat with me while I was doing a round of TV interviews. Half way
through the three hours of sitting in the same spot she was attacked by areporter on a Sacramento morning show who only wanted to talk about theSuper Bowl incident. Now, I made it perfectly clear before we went live on the air that I
wasn't talking about the Super Bowl or Janet's family. We had less than 5minuets so I wanted to keep it positive and focus on the movie. But hedidn't want to keep it positive. I had to maintain my composure because we
were live on the air. I didn't let her speak. I kept jumping in because itwas just so unfair to her. I have not seen Justin Timberlake attacked likethat. I wasn't going to let them do that to her. Believe me when I tell
you--Janet worked so hard on this film. She deserved more respect fromthis man than that! We both did. In the mist of all of this I was fighting trying to get more screensbecause every other movie that opens with a track record like mine have
not had to deal with fighting for screens. Most of the movies of mycounterparts open on at least 3,000 screens. MARRIED was given 2,000.Needless to say I was exhausted and mentally drained. So, by this time it
was last Thursday and I just had no more to give. So, when I started towrite that email (about the movie and for you to please check your ticketsand so on) all that I could think was, "Tyler don't let these people get
you down. As a matter of fact, speak a word of encouragement to the peoplethat have been there for you and let that be that!" Every time I'm overwhelmed by negative I just have to remember how good
God has been to me. And as I was thinking about all of this all I couldhear was LIVE YOUR DREAM BOY! LIVE YOUR DREAM!! I wrote to you about dreams because I was just in a place of realizingthat I had done all that I could do and the movie was in God's hands, so I
just wanted to encourage somebody. After I sent that email to you I wasreading your responses on the message board and, well, you don't know whatyou did for me. Here I was thinking that I was encouraging you and then
you turned around and encouraged me! That's why I thank God for you andyour messages. But little did I know how much more was to come...Jesus!!! So, now cut to Friday. . .Dear GOD!!! I decided to go to the movie and just relax. I was trying to buy tickets
online so I tried the 7 o'clock show. It was sold out. I then tried the 8. It was sold out. Then the 9. It, too, was sold out! So I thought, "I needto call the theater. Maybe they'll save me a seat since I know some of
the folks that are in this movie." (smile) After the movie started I was brought into the back of the theater, and nosooner than I sat down I realized why I was having such a battle. I thenrealized why there was such an attack. As I looked at the faces of the
people in this theater laughing and crying I got it. I got it! I had afeeling that this movie was special, but I didn't know how special. Icould literally see husbands and wives coming together. I could see people
letting go of past hurts. And I could feel forgiveness in the air. Ienjoyed watching your faces while you watched the movie. Between the tearsin my eyes and the watching of your faces I didn't get see much of the
movie. And then I got home and went to the message board and you all confirmed inwords all that I was feeling in that theater. So, with all of that said Iwant to say to you, thank you. Thank you for crowding into those theaters.
Thank for dealing with the headaches. Thank you for fighting your wayacross town. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for the number one moviein America. You did that and believe me--all of the ones that I mentioned at the top

POLICE BRUTALITY

Good Morning All,

I'm sending out this short email before I go back to lie down. Before I tell you about my Thursday, let me give you this information:

I am 5'3", approximately 112-115 lbs and I wear a Size 3. I'm a '76 Lindblom Technical HS grad and hold 2 BA degrees, in English & Business Management, from Barat College '80, Lake Forest, IL. I'm the PTA & NCLB (No Child Left Behind) Secretary and I serve on the LSC (Local School Council) at my daughters' school since they've been in school (2001). I'm a US Army Veteran (Paralegal & Spanish Interrogator) and have 27 years in the Army and Army Reserves, combined.

I've had Arthritis in Both Hips and Chrondamalacia Patella in Both Knees (I don't have any cartilage between the Patella and the joint below) since I was in the Army in 1981.

I have Bi-Lateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Both Hands, since 1997, caused by Repetitive Motion at the Post Office.

This past Thursday morning, at approximately 0850 to 0900 hours, while taking our 2 girls to school, I was dragged away from my Chevy Blazer truck to the middle of the street and beaten up by 2 White Chicago policeman, on the corner of 102nd and Aberdeen.

This was all done while my daughters were in the car...the only witnesses.

I was finally given a ticket...after being in 2 different jails, all day, until my release at 7pm...

for 1 bogus charge of Failure To Stop At A Stop Sign...at 103rd & Aberdeen, which never occurred.

And, for the policemen who may be reading this:
Yes...I had my Driver's License and Proof of Insurance...which, by the way, is paid thru Jan '08. I have never been arrested, no parking tickets, no warrants and have been fingerprinted 1) In the Army, where I held a Top Secret Clearance for MANY years as a Paralegal and 2) When I taught grammar school with Chicago Public Schools in the '80s.

The 1st White policeman made a wide right turn onto 103rd & Aberdeen, head on into my truck (which was on Aberdeen headed Northbound) and this action initiated the sequence of events that followed.

I was supposedly arrested for Disorderly Conduct (I was yelling for Help and for someone to dial 911 as I hadn't done anything) and Resisting Arrest (the 1st policeman who was dragging me by my wrists and arms, yelled for me to "Stop resisting arrest"...AFTER people began to come out of their homes).

None of my paperwork lists these 2 charges...only Failure To Stop At A Stop Sign.

I went to the Emergency Room Friday and then filed a complaint at OPS, the Office of Professional Standards, later that evening, in the IIT Research Building at 10 West 35th Street. I meet with a Private Investigator and have a doctor's appointment Monday morning. If this email seems scanty, in details, it's because this is all "fresh" and is in the process of being investigated.

Be apprised, that THIS is NOT a bogus hoax or scam or Urban Legend.

This is for real.

This is also NOT the last time that you'll hear about this incident because I intend to let the WORLD know about this incident thru different mediums, as it unfolds.

No. They were being wishy-washy, displaying no desire to learn, no natural inquisitiveness.

Basically, a paralegal came in (I'm a wordprocesser, but I'm housed with IT.) asking for a software tool that we have to be modified to meet new criteria. The tool we have was purchased from a vendor, but is basically a macro that generates a specific type of label. All he wanted was for the tool to use a different sized label. The people around me, including my boss and the IT manager, made it seem like he was asking for something crazy. It's as if they are content to sit and do the same thing day-in, day-out, never anything new or challenging.

This presents a problem for someone of my inquisitive nature. I ask a lot of questions and pose just as many workarounds for stuff that we allegedly can't do.

I'm basically doomed in the sense that I haven't really learned anything new in the past year and there is no indication that I will in the future. I guess the reality of it hit home (again) when they BOTH jumped on the excuse bandwagon for a problem that, even though we don't own the tool, would be fun to tackle nonetheless. It's not like we don't have plenty of down-time for studying the problem. Barring that, I'm sure the vendor could modify the code in a snap. It's what they do for crying out loud.

I don't know . . . difficult to be coherent . . . don't know how to express what I'm feeling.

Yeah, I understand you perfectly!

And yeah, I've been in that position before ... but it wasn't in the workplace. But, it does get kinda depressing, nonetheless.
