They share a common etymology

science
c.1300, "knowledge (of something) acquired by study," also "a particular branch of knowledge," from O.Fr. science, from L. scientia "knowledge," from sciens (gen. scientis), prp. of scire "to know," probably originally "to separate one thing from another, to distinguish," related to scindere "to cut, divide," from PIE base *skei- (cf. Gk. skhizein "to split, rend, cleave," Goth. skaidan, O.E. sceadan "to divide, separate;" see shed (v.)). Modern sense of "non-arts studies" is attested from 1678. The distinction is commonly understood as between theoretical truth (Gk. episteme) and methods for effecting practical results (tekhne), but science sometimes is used for practical applications and art for applications of skill. Main modern (restricted) sense of "body of regular or methodical observations or propositions ... concerning any subject or speculation" is attested from 1725; in 17c.-18c. this concept commonly was called philosophy. To blind (someone) with science "confuse by the use of big words or complex explanations" is attested from 1937, originally noted as a phrase from Australia and New Zealand.

conscience
c.1225, from O.Fr. conscience, from L. conscientia "knowledge within oneself, a moral sense," prp. of conscire "be mutually aware," from com- "with" + scire "to know." Probably a loan-translation of Gk. syneidesis. Sometimes nativized in O.E./M.E. as inwit. Rus. also uses a loan-translation, so-vest, "conscience," lit. "with-knowledge." Conscientious objector first recorded 1916.

Thank you for that sentiment, HB...

I should have been clearer...

I was speaking to the words Con and Science...using the meaning of Con as "to persuade by deception" versus the meaning of Science, which you've listed as "knowledge of SomeThing acquired by study".

If we are to have "knowledge of SomeThing acquired by study", then it would go WithOut saying that we are not persuading OurSelves via deception regarding that SomeThing, would it not?

Unless....we are learned but insistent upon persuading OurSelves OtherWise?

Con
Science

The Age Old Question: How can one "Know ThySelf" if the "self" is made up of two opposing entities? The Con and the Science?

Which do we listen to: the Con or the Science?

Or do we mesh the two and hope for the best?

There was a man who had given much thought to what he wanted from life. He had experienced
many moods and trials. He had experimented with different ways of living, and he had had his
share of both success and failure. At last, he began to see clearly where he wanted to go.
Diligently, he searched for the right opportunity. Sometimes he came close, only to be pushed
away. Often he applied all his strength and imagination, only to find the path hopelessly blocked.
And then at last it came. But the opportunity would not wait. It would be made available only
for a short time. If it were seen that he was not committed, the opportunity would not come
again.
Eager to arrive, he started on his journey. With each step, he wanted to move faster; with each
thought about his goal, his heart beat quicker; with each vision of what lay ahead, he found
renewed vigor. Strength that had left him since his early youth returned, and desires, all kinds of
desires, reawakened from their long-dormant positions.
Hurrying along, he came upon a bridge that crossed through the middle of a town. It had been
built high above a river in order to protect it from the floods of spring. He started across. Then
he noticed someone coming from the opposite direction. As they moved closer, it seemed as
though the other were coming to greet him. He could see clearly, however, that he did not know
this other, who was dressed similarly except for something tied around his waist.
When they were within hailing distance, he could see that what the other had about his waist
was a rope. It was wrapped around him many times and probably, if extended, would reach a
length of 30 feet.
The other began to uncurl the rope, and, just as they were coming close, the stranger said,
“Pardon me, would you be so kind as to hold the end a moment?” Surprised by this politely
phrased but curious request, he agreed without a thought, reached out, and took it.
“Thank you,” said the other, who then added, “two hands now, and remember, hold tight.”
Whereupon, the other jumped off the bridge.
Quickly, the free-falling body hurtled the distance of the rope’s length, and from the bridge the
man abruptly felt the pull. Instinctively, he held tight and was almost dragged over the side. He
managed to brace himself against the edge, however, and after having caught his breath, looked
down at the other dangling, close to oblivion
“What are you trying to do?” he yelled.
“Just hold tight,” said the other.
“This is ridiculous,” the man thought and began trying to haul the other in. He could not get the
leverage, however. It was as though the weight of the other person and the length of the rope
had been carefully calculated in advance so that together they created a counterweight just
beyond his strength to bring the other back to safety.
“Why did you do this?” the man called out.
“Remember,” said the other, “if you let go, I will be lost.”
“But I cannot pull you up,” the man cried.
“I am your responsibility,” said the other.
“Well, I did not ask for it,” the man said.
“If you let go, I am lost,” repeated the other.
He began to look around for help. But there was no one. How long would he have to wait? Why
did this happen to befall him now, just as he was on the verge of true success? He examined the
side, searching for a place to tie the rope. Some protrusion, perhaps, or maybe a hole in the
boards. But the railing was unusually uniform in shape; there were no spaces between the
boards. There was no way to get rid of this newfound burden, even temporarily.
“What do you want?” he asked the other hanging below.
“Just your help,” the other answered.
“How can I help? I cannot pull you in, and there is no place to tie the rope so that I can go and
find someone to help me help you.”
“I know that. Just hang on; that will be enough. Tie the rope around your waist; it will be easier.”
Fearing that his arms could not hold out much longer, he tied the rope around his waist.
“Why did you do this?” he asked again. “Don’t you see what you have done? What possible purpose
could you have had in mind?”
“Just remember,” said the other, “my life is in your hands.”
What should he do? “If I let go, all my life I will know that I let this other die. If I stay, I risk losing
my momentum toward my own long-sought-after salvation. Either way this will haunt me
forever.” With ironic humor he thought to die himself, instantly, to jump off the bridge while still
holding on. “That would teach this fool.” But he wanted to live and to live life fully. “What a
choice I have to make; how shall I ever decide?”
As time went by, still no one came. The critical moment of decision was drawing near. To show
his commitment to his own goals, he would have to continue on his journey now. It was already
almost too late to arrive in time. But what a terrible choice to have to make.
A new thought occurred to him. While he could not pull this other up solely by his own efforts,
if the other would shorten the rope from his end by curling it around his waist again and again,
together they could do it. Actually, the other could do it by himself, so long as he, standing on
the bridge, kept it still and steady.
“Now listen,” he shouted down. “I think I know how to save you.” And he explained his plan.
But the other wasn’t interested.
“You mean you won’t help? But I told you I cannot pull you up myself, and I don’t think I can
hang on much longer either.”
“You must try,” the other shouted back in tears. “If you fail, I die.”
The point of decision arrived. What should he do? “My life or this other’s?” And then a new idea.
A revelation. So new, in fact, it seemed heretical, so alien was it to his traditional way of thinking.
“I want you to listen carefully,” he said, “because I mean what I am about to say. I will not accept
the position of choice for your life, only for my own; the position of choice for your own life I
hereby give back to you.”
“What do you mean?” the other asked, afraid.
“I mean, simply, it’s up to you. You decide which way this ends. I will become the counterweight.
You do the pulling and bring yourself up. I will even tug a little from here.” He began unwinding
the rope from around his waist and braced himself anew against the side.
“You cannot mean what you say,” the other shrieked. “You would not be so selfish. I am your
responsibility. What could be so important that you would let someone die? Do not do this to
me.”
He waited a moment. There was no change in the tension of the rope.
“I accept your choice,” he said, at last, and freed his hands.
The End.

Very powerful Kresge...Powerful indeed..I guess someone understood this before me..

The person who sought to kill the man's dreams by testing him like this had to be the Devil himself...

I am not saying that those who behave this way are the devil, however, when you do something which is obviously risky as hell..Do it and face the consequence for yourself...Don't bank on someone else always being there to pay the cost for you when your stunt fails...

I agree...
It's extremely windy today but still a nice change from all the intense heat we had for a while (here in southern california).

I don't like HOT days. Eek It's sticky, sweaty & there's that thing called: bad air quality aka 'pollution' to consider. *sigh*

I much prefer cold weather but not too cold. Wink

Rainy days are cool too but only maybe 3 or 4 days of rain and no...not..not too heavy.

The perfect day to me is a slight breeze on a low 70s day. Smile

And if you did not think "blah" was directed at you ... you can refrain from wasting both your and my time with unproductive silliness ...
Folks should 'get over themselves' and stop trying to tell others what to do (you are powerless).

It's all on YOU ... if you thought I was referring to your comments.

Get some rest, K. One way or the other your body will get the rest it demands. Wouldn't want you falling asleep at the wheel or during an important meeting. Or losing focus at an important time.
My random thought: WHY is so there so much focus on what President Obama has done in the first 100 days of service when no one seemed to pay enough attention to what Bush was doing for the entire 8 years that landed us in...well, economic hell?

One reason is because Bush was so inept and ineffective at doing anything positive during his term.

Another is because Obama has been more effective during this time than Bush could even dream of being in his entire life! Eek

This whole "100 days" thing started back in the day when one of our Presidents (I think it was Roosevelt 19) decided to embark on a "Superman-type" approach to starting off his presidency by getting a lot done in a short amount of time.

Ever since then, the media (being the sensationalism whores that they are! Eek) have taken it and run with it ... gauging and judging EVERY president's effectiveness within his first 100 days (Mad) of taking office.

Of course, Obama has been busy and given them PLENTY of news to work with!! But, I tried to watch several different news stations last night and within a 1/2 hour on each channel, there were about 50 "1st 100 days" advertisements .. apparently, each are going to devote their entire day of newscasting (on Wed.) to critique the president's performance. sck

And this morning, everywhere I click it's the same damn thing! Frown I've been hearing about "the first 100 days" for the past 98 days already! Eek And I'm just sick of it!

Sick, sick, sick, sick, sick. td6
Some folk associate being pro black with prejudice & racism, however, nothing is further from the truth (in my case)...

I don't agree with racism of any kind...

but, oooooooh, how the tides have changed AND all it took was a little swine flu. Eek

A little swine flu caused a cool person (like me Smile) to 'racial profile'. Say it isn't so. hit

No, it's not because I'm pro black...

simply put, it's because of the recent outbreak of the swine flu.

Yes, that's right, I said it.

Last I heard 'Mexico' (where the outbreak originated) had 68 deaths from this virus and milder cases have been reported in California (& a few other states too).

seems NOBODY wants to control the borders these days (at least in Calif) and now that this health crisis is spilling over to the United States...guess which community will be affected more than any other? Eek shhhhhhhh....(whispering) black folks that's who. Ain't that how it usually goes?

Anyway....

I saw an old Mexican friend this morning (who I haven't seen in a long while) and I hesitated to greet him with my usual hug. See. this is how it goes....When I haven't seen folk in a long time I will usually give a hug, it's what I do, I'm a hugging type of person USUALLY...

NOW, though...with the swine flu being what it is.....and folk sniffing (as if they had a runny nose) ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Sorry to say but I am racial (swine flu) profiling...

folk who look as if they've just step across the border (of Mexico) are given even MORE distance between us. Why? because (in my experience) too many hispanics DO NOT cover their mouth when coughing or sneezing. Eek

Again, I am not prejudice...I don't believe in racism or racial discrimination (under the law) but I damn sho ain't getting too close to certain folk.

That's my bad.

also, I am taking all other precautions because I 'do' know you can get it from anybody.

LMAO Fab! I park and ride the bus into work and there are quite a few Mexican citizens who ride the bus uptown with me in the morning. You should have seen me cutting my eyes at them and mentally making note of which ones were NOT on the bus this morning. LOL It's sad but, hey, we are human.

They also say that people in America have experienced a milder form of it and they don't understand why...but! And a company in Virginia has partnership in this farm and is currently testing [they say they are but could be lying...you know how whitefolks[is]] the pigs in Mexico. I remember that day so well and vividly.
