Ma'at Hotep Kocolicious,

The answers to your questions about why we Black folk are the way we are can be summed up and found in the willie lynch letter to slave owners in Virginia. This snake or pig explains exactly how it was to be done to us with self hatred within us and mistrust amoungst us and the long term effects his methods of dividing us and turning us against one-another with divisions of color(light skinned vs dark skinned) gender (male vs female) economics (house niggas vs field niggas), etc. It was embedded in us during slavery and is still actively working today. It doesn't help that religion is now the main culprit because it cause's us to react rather than interact. Within the religious community the church should be the focal point of our communities economic and cultural development. Instead it has become the focal point of it self-serving commitment to 'itself' with the use of Jesus as the 'carrot-on-a -stick'. I wish someone would tell me how many church's had a 'Black' skinned Jesus hanging on it's wall prior to the cultural revolution of 60's? I grew up with a 'white' skinned Jesus in my church because white amerikkka taught us that Jesus was, indeed, white. Or, how many Black church's had the community at heart before 'mega churches' became in vogue? The pimps and snakes in the pulpits could put a stop to all of the mess within our communities but why should they? They have the largest followings of Black folk in this country, barring none. These people are like pied pipers leading Black folk back to the days of self serving slavery. But, again, why should they care? They are true capitalist and patriotic followers of the amerikkkan doctrine. Ever hear one speak against the sick and evil killings in Iraq? Against the war itself? Hell no and you won't. They are carrying out and living the amerikkkan dream don't cha know!! Good negros, one and all. Hotep. Olu Olufemi Chike.
fro You're right Brotha C. I hate to admit it cuz I am soooo disappointed. These blackfolks were all fired up. Let's do something now...kinda thingy. And so we did. And man oh man. I do have a little temper...so after the "Good negroes" got off the podium...after their what seemed like a marathon hiphopchurch performance NOT ONE of them wanted to be in charge of actually going into the neighborhood door to door to recruit more citizens and pass out updated information. Needless to say this Pd me off!Mad Cuz a young brotha...a former gang banger volunteered. 17 He doesn't have any business being that visual....since he is changing his life.....the last thing he needs is for a rival gang to recognize him walking in the neighborhood. I am worried about him. And you think those so-called "house kneegrows" would stepped up? Knowing he is jeopardizing his life? Hell Naw! This is sooooo pitiful! But you're absolutely RIGHT! Massa has taught us well to be envious of each other, to hate on each other. To sabbotage any efforts toward a better life. Crabs in a barrel. Like I said I fell asleep listening to all that blah blah. But I am hopeful that we will achieve our goal cuz there are a lot of good sistas and brothas who really are dedicated. And came to table not only volunteeering their time, but gave money, ideas and even brought refreshments. I'm just gonna have to be POSITIVE about this and wait and see what happens. fro
Hotep Kocolicious, I agree with you completely. Black folk are being lulled to sleep with the promise of a 'pie-in-the-sky myth (heaven) while the true heaven is right here on earth. Whitey either lives it or lives in it or visit it daily. Hell???? We live it, live in it, embrace it and condone it. Hell is our comminities with the filth and crime perperated by some of our own ignorant people who are like the grasshopper: life is one big party. Blame whitey? Hell yes. Had he left us alone we would eventually surpassed him because life, liberty and the persuit of happiness started with us in Afrika, Mexico and Peru as well as in the rest of the countries in and around the world. We know whitey's his-story instead place ours. We know very little of ours. If you don't know where you came from how the hell do you know where you are going? The young brotha's and sista's of generation X are less inclined to follow his format as did and do my generation. However, they foolishly think that just because whitey throws a few 'big' bucks their way, they have made it. Well, so did the jews in hitler's germany and they were considered 'white' or non-Black. We have too many ignorant mammys, pappys and non-productive people in Black sociey who would like nothing better than to live off the blood, sweat and tears of the true and real Black folk. This problem is never ever addressed by the pimps and snakes in the pulpit. I am not just spewing venom about preachers because there are many so-called educated Black folk who still follow massa with their 'greek' organizations when they are far removed from greece. And the greeks don't care any more for them than they do any other Black organization; perhpas even less. There is no group of people in the world that emulate whitey like the negro anglo-saxon's in amerikkka. Negro and negro anglo-saxon's are whitey's shadow; front, back, left and right. Where he goe's they are sure to follow. Might even get there before him and wait for him to wait on him. Malcolm, Martin, Marcus, Medgar, Fannie, John Henrick, Fanon, E. Franklin, Elijah, Asa, and countless others left a legacy for us to follow and what do we do? Disrespect our women, elders and children. Kill off each other for their so-call gang and drug turf that actually belongs to whitey. Sell drugs to young folk who stay so drugged up that they cannot produce dust. We have allowed a few 'ignoramous' non-productive and criminal intended folk to push aside all of the strides we've made in amerikkka because of their quest for white-type wealth and/or life style. Many, many, many Black folk died so that the Black race in amerikkka can better themselves and the pulpit dwellers are not allowing this to happen because they have negro's following a white jesus who never existed and not one person can prove he did. The bible is the key to the prisons and jails and once we open the doors and throw away this key we can deal with this devil who comes in the form of a white so-called 'jesus'. Savior? Who's? Not mine, not ours. Not even theirs. He never happened nor did any of the people in the bible. The slave ship 'jesus' brought many slaves to this country and that, in and of itself, should tell the Black race in this country something. Perhaps, on day soon, the mighty Black race will rise up and retake their place at the top of the pecking order or food chain. Education is the key but only the 'true' form of education will suffice: meaning our story and not 'his-story'. We already know his-story, now it's time to learn ours. Hotep. Olu Olufemi Chike
Peace...

Something happened today which caused me to remember the time my black cat brought a rat into the bathroom where I was. She presented the barely alive rat as a present to me. I was completely disgusted, and I demanded that she take the rat out..She looked at me in a very peculiar manner, picked the rat up with her mouth and took it out of the bathroom...

Poor kitty....

No....

I'd beg to differ.
I was curious and decided to look over those verses myself, and well . .

1 Timothy 5:5 - Now she who is a widow indeed and who has been left alone, has fixed her hope on G.d and continues in entreaties and prayers night and day.

1 Timothy 5:6 - But she who gives herself to wanton pleasure is dead even while she lives.

1 Timothy 5:7 - Prescribe these things as well, so that they may be above reproach.

*I guess it's all a matter of interpretation.
I stood in line at a fast food restaurant for a friend. And it was a long ass line too. . .

And there was this brother there who was getting on my last nerve. He was giving the cashier his order (cuz it was his turn in line) but he seemed confused and he seemed to be going through the menu. . .

brother: How many pieces of chicken do I get with that?

"How much will that be?

What are your side orders?"

Roll Eyes Maaaaaaaaaaaan oh man, I wanted to shake him Eek

*what the h*ll is wrong with you?* is what I wanted to say. . .

It was bad enough that I agreed to make this stop when I was pressed for time, but did the brother have to hold up the line because HE wasn't organized enough to have his order together beforehand? Unbelievable.

'Some' people. geez louise.

Damn.

*tapping foot*

When the brother asked the cashier yet ANOTHER question. . .

"ohmygawd" slipped from my lips. ek

I even turned my nose up as the brother left the counter to wait for his food. Humph!

Finally it was MY turn and of course *I* was ready.

I gave the cashier my order and then he asked the 5 dollar question.

cashier: Which side orders would you like with that?

Me: "what do you have?"

My point? People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. lol

Practically everyday when my daughter comes home from school she is telling me about yet another cute boy in one of her classes. Last week it was Devon, the week before it was Tre and now 'this week' it's George.....

She went on & on about how George 'smiled' at her and her heart started beating really hard. Eek

Shoot! I'm thinking to myself, I thought I had more time before the BOY CRAZY faze started. We used to discuss crossword puzzles and math homework, NOW. . .at 11 years old she is noticing 'boys' more & more.

(sigh) I just listen & comment when I know I should. . .

I don't make a big deal out of it though, and I point out that her feelings are perfectly normal, but inside I'm crying - why why why???? bang

She's too dang young to be thinking of how deep some little boy's dimples are. Eek

Ah well.

I can only appreciate the fact that she's comfortable discussing her feelings with me. . .

At that same age, I wasn't comfortable talking to my mother about boys or too much of anything else.

I can only hope that my daughter 'always' feels she can talk to me. . .

because I will always listen.

Regulars at Claude Campbell's grocery store meet on a March afternoon: Shown are, from left, Ervin Jones, Mayceo Hudson, Floyd Brown and Charlie Jackson.
Owner Claude Campbell carefully logs every transaction or charge into one of several composition books. For customers like Mayceo Hudson, right, the closing of the store will mark the end of an era. Hudson has frequented the store since he was 7. ˜I ain't seen no change,' he said. Kenny Parker, left, and Floyd Brown settle in at the back of Campbell's Grocery on a relaxed 2006 day. ˜I always get a pack of Saltine crackers and a can of Diet Coke,' Brown said. Campbell's Grocery opened in 1946 on U.S. 1. For decades, it has been a ˜monument' for customers in the Elgin area. ˜I've lived a good long time,' says Claude Campbell, 77. His father ran the Elgin grocery store before him. Straw brooms, both for use and for sale, share space with some guns in a corner of the store. The weapons were pawned "” a sideline to the main business.

CAMPBELL'S GROCERY
Campbell's Grocery has sold an array of merchandise in its 60-plus years in Elgin. Here is a sampling of items the country grocery store kept on hand:

"¢ Poston's Pride Bologna, from Florence, sold by the roll

"¢ Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese by the barrel, also from Poston's

"¢ Fresh meats, trucked in from Florence and Lancaster

"¢ Coca-Cola and Orange Crush in glass bottles

"¢ Metal Coke coolers

"¢ Cane syrup and molasses

"¢ 25-pound bags of evaporated granulated salt

Elgin grocer Claude Campbell still offers Coke in glass bottles, fresh meats from a 1950s display case and store credit for the folks he knows.

Customers of Campbell's Grocery have shuffled in and out during the more than 60 years the store has been open "” a place where friendly banter is as much a staple in the rickety clapboard store as the specialty bologna and cheese some Elgin residents buy by the hoop.

The grocery has been a constant in this growing and changing town three miles from the Northeast Richland/Kershaw County line.

But come Saturday, the second-generation owner will close his doors, leaving a void for those who have sought out Campbell's for its sense of community and old-fashioned service.

Minor health issues have nagged at 77-year-old Claude Campbell for years. But he has kept the store going strong, in part to honor his father, Thomas Edward "Ed" Campbell.

The elder Campbell, then 72, left the store the night of June 12, 1982, drove home and never showed up the following day for a Sunday family dinner, said Harvey Gardner, who is married to Claude's sister, Vivian.

He was found dead in his home. The son of a family friend pleaded guilty to armed robbery and murder and is serving a life sentence.

Claude Campbell "” a quiet man who doesn't like to talk much about himself "” has always felt running the store was something his father wanted him to do, Gardner said.

Staying busy with it is the only reason he got through losing his father. "But you can see a difference in Mr. Campbell when it gets near June," added Gerald Goff, who has helped Claude Campbell run the store for 26 years, since he was just 16.

Gardner agreed. "It never goes away," he said of the loss. "It's always been hard for Claude."

DO YOU KNOW CLAUDE'S?

Campbell's Grocery opened in 1946 on U.S. 1, the third store for Ed Campbell. He ran two others in nearby Lugoff and Elgin that he later closed.

The family's home was next to the store, so they didn't have to worry about getting to work, Campbell said.

Claude Campbell began working full time at the store at age 23, when his father fell ill with stomach ulcers in 1953. They worked side by side until his death.

There have been seven robberies at the grocery store during its 60-plus years "” but closing has not been an option Claude Campbell considered.

Besides honoring his father, he felt obligated to keep the store open for loyal customers, who kept coming back even when chain groceries opened nearby.

Margie and Carol Baker, a mother and daughter who live in Lugoff, stopped in last week for a bologna roll.

Since Campbell announced the store's closing, customers like the Bakers have been trying to stock up on their favorite meats and cheeses, so they'll have some to carry them through for a few weeks.

Campbell's Grocery "is almost like a monument," Carol Baker said. "Everybody knows where Claude's store's at.

"If you don't know, you're not from here."

The grocery has become a community gathering spot, where customers sit on the tops of oil cans, watch baseball or football games on cable TV and chat about comings and goings in Elgin.

The Campbells wanted a family-friendly place and no trouble, so the family never sold alcohol, said Goff.

Longtime customers here are more like family than patrons. And as such, they look out for each other.

On a recent night, Joseph Lyles, a customer for more than 35 years, nonchalantly picked up a pack of crackers, placed a few coins in the cash register and without uttering more than a friendly grunt, exited the back screen door.

Lyles "” who says Claude Campbell is "more like a brother" "” is one of several men who hang out after dark in the store or in its parking lot in his car.

"I make sure he's all right," Lyles said. "I can't let nothing happen to Claude."

In addition to running the store, Campbell has made money in real estate for the past 35 years in Elgin and the surrounding area.

In fact, he sold a lot on U.S. 1 where a Food Lion went up several years ago.

"I'm not being forced out for competition," he said. "I still have a pretty good business."

˜I'VE WORKED VERY HARD IN MY LIFE'

Campbell said the time is right for his retirement.

"Sooner or later, I'm going to come down with more serious health problems" other than aches and pains, he said.

"If I do say so myself, I've worked very hard in my life. I'm not going to miss being here 12 hours a day, six days a week."

He wants to spend time on his 300-acre farm on the Wateree River in Lugoff and will go fishing and hunting more often.

He said he plans to take care of Goff, who Campbell said has been a wonderful employee.

Goff, who is married with three sons and three stepdaughters, had a stroke two years ago.

"He's given me the best part of his life," Campbell said. "I can't tell him he doesn't have a job. I plan to take care of him."

His customers say they'll start shopping the nearby chain stores once the grocery closes.

"A lot of people are going to miss the store," said Gibson Dale, an Elgin resident who spends his afternoons there.

But mostly, many say, they'll miss Campbell, even though they expect to see him around town.

"I guess," Dale added, "I'll have to go home now."

THIS IS THE TYPE OF PLACE I REMEMBER GROWING UP IN THE SOUTH
Usually when someone I know is experiencing financial difficulties my first reaction is to help - it never occurs to me NOT to.

As a result I may seem 'free' with my money or "easy" to some people.

They mistakenly fail to realize I'm FAR from a fool and being generous & wanting to help doesn't mean DOORMAT.

I can see that certain folks 'think' they're taking advantage of me, but I have given them enough rope to hang themselves and now I'm done. . .

Over the years they have borrowed large amounts of money from me, and then will pay me back with a 20 here & there (never actually paying off the loan).

Too funny, really. lol

Why. . .? you might ask.

Because I don't loan money that I cannot afford to lose, and they're not getting away with any more than I allow them to. . .

nevertheless, it's always disappointing to see someone who I thought was 'cool' turn out to be nothing more than another USER.

Anyway. . .

my mother was getting on my case (again) about this recently. . .

What she doesn't know is I'm learning to ignore my first reaction to 'give' when it comes to money. And it hasn't been easy for me to retrain my gut reaction but with each passing day, I'm getting better at it. Smile

Someone I know needed money for something frivolous but necessary, and boy! did I get the full sob story. 7

Roll Eyes <<<~~me

Without thinking I asked, "How much do you need?"

My mother would be proud. 16
I went to a park today. And on my way to find me a nice shade tree to sit under I passed a family having their family reunion.

Around sundown, I went back to my car to leave and after I put my car in reverse and turned to look behind me so I could back up, my eye caught the top of the head and pair of eyes of a little boy, maybe 4 y/o, just above the bottom of my passenger-side window! Eek

Startled, I started looking around for who this little child belonged to, and saw a woman and 3 young girls packing up their car to leave. The little boy then went and stood behind the back of my car so I couldn't see him, but the females made no attempt to come and get him.

I waited ... and then I saw them looking down the parking lot, and I assumed he had went running, so, I again put my car in reverse and slowly started to back up. The boy suddenly appeared in front of my car .. then walked over and started rubbing on my headlights and playing with the grill.

I put my car in neutral and, again, looked in my rear view mirror at the woman and girls who were still watching him, but making no attempt to call him over to them! As I was about to get out and get to cussin' somebody out .. the woman walked by my side of the car and said "Is he with you?" I told her no, I thought he was with her! She said, "No, he belongs up there, I'll take him back over there."

She scooped him up and then said, "I saw him standing by your car. I thought he knew you." I told her no, but I saw him there too and I was afraid to move, because I didn't want to run over him.

It was luck that I saw the top of his little head .. he was so small and playing in a parking lot with no supervision. I don't even want to think about what would of happened had I not seen him. But I hope his Mom does .. before she let's it happen again. Roll Eyes
fro Well...SistaEbonyRose....number #1 I am GLAD you saw him FIRST. and number #2...I think in the case where there are children around...you better start lookin' first all the time before you move car. Cuz some of these new parents are DIFFERENT these days. BTW this happens to me ALL THE TIME. I had to innate the behavior of taking my time and look thoroughly before moving any gears. Some PARENTS are just too busy in their bling...to notice a thing...until somethin' tragic happens of course. And then the blame game begins. My thing is: Don't have 'em, if you CAN'T or WON'T watch 'em. I'm happy everythin' in your case turned out alright, though. ThankGod!Big Grin fro

Pop Warner football is suppose to be about the children..However, in Detroit, the coaches are way more into the game than any of the players. From what I understand a few coaches mnade bets up to $4,000.00 on one game this year...Damn..

Adults should find better things to do other than ruining the league established for Children.

I had such a good time with my daughter yesterday at the Taste of Soul community event.

Even the times when I had to leave her. . .I'd see her out in the crowd and feel so proud.

That's what it's all about for me:

My family, friends, and community . tfro

Really. . .there are times when I absolutely LOVE my life.
My father used to tell me about "confidence men".
Folks who appeal to your highest nature as they peddle a sob story to talk you out of your money or possessions. Because they stroke your ego and or flatter you, your highest nature wants to be what they have told you you are; you
WANT to come through for them.
They give YOU THEIR confidence.

Often it's "You're the one somebody I can depend on, you're the only one I've got or " I can tell you are a good "Christian woman..." 2

It took me while but I learned that one can be exploited not just for money but also time, emotions.

My same age cousin will often repeat the line above, in our sea of relatives, I am the only one she can trust.

I am rewarded with her constant rants and anger.

The residue of one of our encounters (often just phone calls) is frustration, aggravation, disappointment and the feeling of having beeen taken advatanged of.

only the blues in return 9

"Call me" is the constant email.. (can never call long distance even on nights or weekends), makes a date, talks it up and then the day of..."oh,uh, I can't make it, something came up".
Have sensed that her husband does not like her to talk on the phone at home,so the fussing and near cussing occur while she is at work and in between her job duties. Roll Eyes

"You are the only somebody who..."
no more. will continue to be polite, embracing, but no longer at the ready to "be there for her"

read a passage where when one enters into a relationship it must be mutually beneficial. 5

she will always be a relative 4

don't need her "confidence" in me. td6

[COLOR:RED]I am no longer conned.
Daddy, I finally get it
fro I hear ya Mirahjay....it's hard when it's a family member....cuz you think well it's family. But friends can do it to ya too. You know "you're my best friend...I wouldn't tell anyone but YOU." And the next thing you know folks are calling you 4 a.m. asking "you sleep?" You want to say to them "Hell yeah I'm sleep what the fock you think I'm doing 4 a.m. in the morning?" You don't cuz you don't want to CRUSH their feelings. But I had to think of something to let them down easy...even though they weren't letting me off so easy. I had to do it especially since each time they called at these ungodly hours it wasn't even an emergencyEek 17 So. First. I had to STOP answering my phone-which was hard since I have almost a thousand children [just kiddin'Big Grin only a few] but I came up with a code. And it works! ThankGodbow So now I sleep like a baby and get up when I want to. Don't have to hold my eyes open all night cuz somebody's husband didn't come home. Don't have to wait UP with homegirl until he does. This was not an EASY task. BUT! After a few years of NOT answering my phone in the wee wee hours of the night....these "friends" finally GOT THE MESSAGE AND *I* finally got some much needed sleep. This is whatcha you call one of life's little lessons. And that lesson is....if they call you "best" anything....friend, cousin, brotha, sista, aunt, uncle-whateva! There's a catch in it SOME WHERE! JHMO...of course. fro
