Raise Hell About Chicago Violence

BlackAmericaWeb's Jeff Johnson writes that retweeting the city's murder numbers isn't enough -- we must get angry and active and address the issues fueling the tragic loss of life.

Why is there no national outrage about what is taking place in Chicago? And I am not talking about national dialogue ... talk. We retweet the murder numbers for weekends in Chicago like they are scores from the basketball game and then say "Damn, what a shame." When 15 people get killed in a weekend outside of urban communities, the national media swarmed like scavengers around a kill. When it happens in cities like Chicago, Philly, New Orleans, and other urban centers, it is just some "ish" that happens.

A headline in yesterday's Washington Post read: As Chicago’s homicide rate spikes, mayor and police boss defend their new crime-fighting plan. The article highlighted the debate between current and past policing strategies. Many believe that it is the strategy of the two previous administrations that brought homicide numbers down from the 900-murder-a-year numbers of the 90's to the more recent averages of 450-murders-a-year since 2005. But the article, and much of the media I have seen and read about Chicago violence, always talk about gangs and crime fighting. But this crisis is bigger than gangs and crime fighting.

All of the violence that is taking place in Chicago and other urban cities is not about gangs and crews. It is about the convergence of massive and generational poverty, under-education, addiction, a culture of violence to solve problems, lack of opportunity and unemployment, and oh yeah ... lack of hope ... on a packed city when it gets hot.

If Black folks would continue to GET mad about murders in our communities like they did in regards to Trayvon Martin....then we would be getting somewhere....fast.  Cuz their brain-dead selective response is REALLY getting old.  Black children are dying EVERYDAY across this nation.  Where is the marching about that?  This is why I say very little when a young person dies....cuz I know when it  first hit the NEWS ...there is be a lotta tough talk....then after a few days the excitement of it all simmers down as if the news of a child's death was a short-lived commerical merely for the conversational entertainment of blacks-which I think is pathetic.  Chicago is just ONE state suffering for this ridiculous violence.  My question:  When we be MOVED like we once were about OUR own circumstances....and MARCH...MARCH....,MARCH until it is RECOGNIZED that the murders must stop....and they MUST stop now?  When?  But.  I already KNOW the answer.  We will continue to DO nothing.  And that's tragic.  But that's just HOW we roll.  Just sayin

I still say that just like thinking of most Americans when it comes to problems, African Americans are are trapped in that same mindset of only using band-aids on cancer sores when it comes to the violence, crime and injustice in Black community.

Policing the gang violence and drug dealing is only putting band-aids on the cancer sores of African America.  It is no different from sending out people with buckets to dip the water from flooded areas when there is a hole in the dam; until someone admits that there is a hole in the dam in the first place, and actually seals up the hole in the dam, no matter how many people with buckets are dipping the water out of the flooded area, it will continue to remain flooded and all the people's hard work is a waste.

African America is going to have to demand that the police "PROTECT AND SERVE" and police forces are rid of racist and psychotic police officers, where Black people are concerned, or just stay the hell out of our communities.

The actual source of illegal drugs have to be cut off:

African America is going to have to file a Class-Action Lawsuit against the United States of America, the DEA, and the Justice Department demanding that they change their Drug Policy of waiting until drugs reach the Black community, young Black males, bypassing, skipping totally over every hierarchy of the chain of illegal drug supply, before they actually do anything regarding illegal drug activity.

The actual source of the guns have to be cut off:

African America has to go after the weak gun laws and all the loopholes in them that allow people to legally purchase and flood guns into the Black community without consequence.

Parents/families:

Those that have children/teenagers in trouble or in the streets engaging in gang and drug activity and that have gun charges, need to be required to take parenting classes or be evaluated to see if they are contributing or aiding and abetting their child's delinquency.

Unfortunately, some families are going to have to give family members ultimatums for them to chose their illegal/criminal/drug/gang activity or their family.

African America is going have to demand that their county and city officials implement Curfews for anyone under eighteen years of age.

African Americans are going to have to demand that their representatives on the Local, State and Federal level access and educate African America about the numerous government grants that could be used to create after-school, week-end, summer and educational programs for their communities.

African Americans knowledgeable of real estate, banking and finance should be tapped to ensure that as many African Americans as possible are actually owning instead of renting the homes and property(ies) in African America.

African America is going to have to STOP supporting entities like the entertainment industry/record industry, for example, that do nothing but negatively influence young African Americans and brainwash/socially condition them into believing the worst stereotypes of African America, Black people are the 'norm'.

My sista!  I totally AGREE! But the million dollar question is:  WILL THEY?  Will the police protect and serve while removing psychotic and racist officers?  Will the African American communities begin boycotting the industries that merely take the money and ignore the social problems plaguing us societally and developmentally?  Will African Americans just WAKE the fock up and handle their own business...instead of waiting for massa to do it?  Cuz if that's so....he's NOT gonna...cuz he's pissed that we have a black president.  Will African Americans finally SEE that the power for change is within?  All you say is absolutely true my sista.  But again I ask:  Will they? Dunno.  But!
