I'll use this post to share various events I come across in my research in the social sciences. I am tired of apologist negroes who do not read, yet tell me I overexaggerate blacks as victims. I'll give them some things to read since they are lazy and do not want to make the effort to be informed. My favor to them.......

No African Americans Allowed: White Patient's Racism Rules at Pa. Hospital

African-American workers at Abington Memorial Hospital were outraged last month when they were told not to enter the room of a white patient.

Supervisors at the nationally recognized hospital told its African-American health-care professionals, as well as food-service and housekeeping staff, not to enter the patient's room or interact with the family.

Abington administrators said they broke hospital policy to avoid a potentially "volatile situation" by adhering to the request of the patient's husband, that only white employees enter his wife's room on the maternity ward.

"We were wrong," said Meg McGoldrick, a vice president at Abington Memorial Hospital. "We should have followed our policy. The whole incident has greatly upset many of our employees who perceived that we were acquiescing to the family's wishes.''

Despite the hospital's policy that states "care will be provided on a nondiscriminatory basis," it seems as though patients are allowed to discriminate.

Catholic Health Care West's medical ethicist, Carol Bayley, said Abington Hospital failed in its responsibility to its employees and the community to accommodate a patient's racial preference.

"This was a fundamental disrespect of these professionals' skills and their fundamental dignities ... a hospital needs to stand against this undercurrent of racism in our society."

The Philadelphia office of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said that prohibiting African-American employees from carrying out the full scope of their duties is reprehensible.

"I don't see why and how a hospital could justify accommodating a request that the professionals attending to a patient be of a particular background," said Barry Morrison, director of the Philadelphia chapter of the ADL. "Certainly, it's demoralizing for the people who work there."

The American Hospital Association (AHA) acknowledged there have been several similar instances its staff knows about and that there are no hard-and-fast industry guidelines for hospitals to follow when such a request is made.

With nearly 5,000 hospitals as members, the Chicago-based AHA is the largest hospital association in the United States. It wouldn't offer hospitals a suggestion as to how to address that situation.

"It's subjective," said Rick Wade, senior vice president at the AHA. "I'm sure the person who made the decision at Abington thought they were doing the right thing."

Goldrick said supervisors at Abington Memorial were acting with good intentions and sought to deflect any confrontation between its African-American staff and the white family. There was no incident reported during the woman's stay.

Since then, Abington Memorial Hospital President Richard L. Jones sent a letter to all its employees and volunteers apologizing for the situation, which he termed "morally reprehensible."

In addition to creating a diversity task force at the 508-bed hospital, which is located in Abington and services patients from Philadelphia and the surrounding primarily white suburbs in Bucks and Montgomery counties, it has hired consultants, and the hospital is revising its anti-discrimination policy.

Earlier this year, the AHA bestowed upon Abington Memorial Hospital the "Quest for Quality" award for raising awareness of the need for an organizational commitment to patient safety and quality.

Wade said hospitals are constantly evaluating how to provide the best treatment for their patients, while protecting and maintaining the dignity of its employees. He said that a hospital's constant patient turnover sometimes subjected workers to society's underbelly.

Perhaps Abington could have been more protective of their employees, Wade said. "Patients come and go, [but] the most important thing at a hospital is the work-force," he said.

Legal, moral and ethical consequences prohibit hospitals from turning away patients based on race.

There are no such consequences to patients who demand doctors, nurses or workers of only a specific race administer health care while seeking treatment. But the hospitals that adhere to those demands could face discrimination lawsuits from their employees.

Lawyers and hospital-industry executives, referring to the recent case in Pennsylvania's Abington Hospital, where a white patient's husband demanded that African-American staffers not enter her room, (See also: No African Americans Allowed: White Patient's Racism Rules at Pa. Hospital) said it's a very delicate balancing act during a health crisis. Regardless, when an employer denies a person or group of people their full employment opportunity based on the racial bias of its customer, it is in violation of their civil rights.

"It's a classic case," said Cyrus Mehri, partner at Mehri & Skalet, a law firm specializing in class-action and employment-discrimination. The Washington, D.C.-based firm represented plaintiffs in the Texaco and Coca-Cola class-action lawsuits.

In a statement after the September incident, Abington Memorial President Richard L. Jones said: "Employees will be assigned to patient services without regard to the race, creed, color, national origin or religion of either the patient or employee. We value each and every member of our staff as caring and competent professionals."

"They had a choice to make and they chose the racist over their own employees," said Mehri. "They made the wrong call."

A hospital administrator should have counseled the biased person that it is the hospital's mission to provide patients with the highest quality care possible, regardless of the health-care professionals' race, said Madonna McGwin, attorney in the corporate-diversity practice at Washington, D.C.-based Holland & Knight.

"It is an unfortunate reality that there are people who are uneducated in the benefits of a diverse staff ... I would hope any employer would have confidence in the professionalism and competence of their staff to allow them to interact with such clients or patients," she said.

While there have been requests by racist patients of hospitals to bar certain races from administering health care, it's more common to hear that male doctors be forbidden to practice obstetrics on Muslim women, for religious reasons.

There are instances when society must accept discrimination based on such factors as the sex or race in the selection of a patient's primary-care physician. However, once, a patient enters the doors of a hospital, there are those who say, "you don't get to chose."

In September, African-American workers at Abington Memorial Hospital were outraged when supervisors on the maternity ward, told them not to enter the room of a white patient. The patient's husband had asked that no African-American health-care professionals, food-service or housekeeping staff interact with the family.

This month, Abington Memorial's president and administrators apologized when it broke from its anti-discrimination policy to accommodate the family's wishes.

"They signed a consent form for treatment, not that they wanted only white people treating the patient," said George Miller, president and chief executive officer at Provena St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee, Ill. "Nothing on that consent form says that providing a white health-care professional meant the patient is receiving a higher level of treatment. The hospital has an obligation to give that patient the highest level of care."

Miller, a veteran hospital administrator, has been at Provena for the past two years. Previously, while serving as chief executive officer of administration at Christus Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Texas, he encountered a similar situation.

A couple of months after the June 1998 dragging murder of African-American James Byrd Jr., the then-accused murder suspect (he was later convicted) James William King, who was white, had a girlfriend who was pregnant. She was admitted to Christus Memorial experiencing premature labor.

Upon meeting the head of obstetrics and gynecology, Effie Land, who is African American, the white mother of King's white girlfriend sought assurances from higher-ups that her daughter would receive "proper" care.

Land said, "I can let you speak with the CEO."

"When I walked through the door," Miller, who is African American, said, "her jaw dropped. She was very surprised."

Miller said he assured her that they would take care of her daughter as they would anybody else.

"We treat everybody with dignity and respect," Miller said he told her.

In another instance, Nashville heart surgeon Michael Petracek, who is white, apologized a couple of years ago for asking an African American to step out of the operating room while he performed surgery on a woman who asked that no African American be present.

He said he obliged because her husband wouldn't have allowed the surgery, which was needed to save her life.

"In a life-threatening situation, you would have to abide by the patient's request," said Dr. Herbert Rakatansky, chair of the American Medical Association's Council on Ethical and Judical Affairs, in a trade journal.

If the situation arises under non life-threatening circumstances, hospital administrators said they should advise the patient that they would provide them with the highest quality care available, regardless of the employees' race, and if they continued to have a racial issue, help with arrangements to transport the patient to another health-care facility. "At the end of the day," McGwin said, "the employer should believe that their diverse staff will have a positive interaction with the patient who requested the hospital discriminate."

Did The Decision to Carry Ghettopoly Put Urban Outfitters in Jeopardy?

Last week, after protests from civil-rights organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League and local chapters of the NAACP, retailer Urban Outfitters agreed to discontinue carrying Ghettopoly, an unauthorized Monopoly-style board game glorifying drug dealing, prostitution and other negative aspects of inner-city life.

The Philadelphia-based retailer made no public announcement of this decision; however, a search for the product on the company's Web site summons a pop-up window with the following message: "Due to customer concerns, Urban Outfitters no longer sells the board game 'Ghettopoly.' "

Ghettopoly is described as a "stolen-property fencing board game." Instead of traditional Monopoly pieces, Ghettopoly game piece include an Uzi submachine gun, a 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor, a marijuana leaf and a pimp. Players (or "playas" as the game calls them) who buy all the stolen property in the same color pattern can purchase crack houses from the loan shark. Four crack houses on each of property in the same color pattern can be converted to housing projects. Instead of "Get of Out Jail Free" cards there are "Hustle" and "Ghetto Stash" cards.

Urban Outfitters responded to the public backlash, but what does the decision to carry a product like Ghettopoly in the first place say about Urban Outfitters' top brass? Urban Outfitters did not return calls to DiversityInc or any other media, but financial analysts were willing to assess the company's decision and the potential impact on its future.

"It speaks very ill of company management," said Kurt Barnard, president of Barnard's Retail Trend Report. "Clearly, (the game) is likely to offend a lot of people and that clearly is not the desired end .... It's hardly the kind of image any retailer would want to present to their customers."

Urban Outfitters was introduced as The Free People store in 1970. Targeting student-age consumers, the company sold used clothes, jeans, ethnic apparel and housewares. The store's name was changed to Urban Outfitters in 1976. In 1992, the company opened its first Anthropologie store, which became a chain of more than 30 stores. The company went public in 1993.

Little information about Urban Outfitters management is available on its corporate site; however, a list of corporate officers shows that the top executives are all men. Philadelphia Weekly reported that Urban Outfitters Co-Founder and President Richard Hayne is a supporter of controversial Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., contributing $13,150 to the senator and his Political Action Committee. Santorum came under fire earlier this year for his anti-gay statements.

Morningstar Stock Analyst Heather Brilliant has not met Urban Outfitters' executives; but she said it's not an unreasonable assumption to think there is little diversity at the top.

Was the decision to carry Ghettopoly enough to damage Urban Outfitters financially?

"What you carry in your stores certainly influences a consumer's perception of your brand," said Gale Daikoku, research director at GartnerG2, a research service of Gartner, Inc., a research and advisory firm based in Stamford, Conn. "In this case, the possible impact is whether the consumer was taken aback by your decision to carry the product."

Daikoku said when consumers are offended by a product, a company's "brand loyalty goes away. That ultimately affects your bottom line."

A shift in consumer favor could be a major blow to Urban Outfitters, which has been performing quite well financially. In the last fiscal year, net income increased 82.7 percent, according to business Web site Hoovers.com. In August, the company announced a 51 percent increase on second quarter earnings and a two-for-one split of its common stock. At close of the market Friday Urban Outfitters stock was valued at 31.32.

Retail analysts attribute the company's success, in part, to the eclectic mix of products it offers young consumers. In addition to urban-influenced clothing lines, such as Triple 5 Soul and Diesel, the company, which has 54 retail outlets in the United States, Canada and Europe, carries kitschy items, such as SpongeBob Square Pants Uno cards, a Jesus action figure, a Hello Kitty Etch-A-Sketch purse, and a kit of 25 drinking games.

The latest episode is not the first time Urban Outfitters has sold an offensive product. In 2001, the retailer received flack for stocking a men's T-shirt that depicted a kneeling naked cowgirl with her body parts labeled like cuts of beef. In 1998, Asian-American consumers expressed outraged at a "Chinese Man" Halloween costume that included thick black-rimmed eyeglasses, a ponytail, a Fu Manchu-style mustache and cap.

"They're trying to create a buzz about the company," said Brilliant. "I think the company doesn't mind the negative press because of the publicity. I don't think that companies like this see this as a misstep."

Ignorance may be bliss, but for corporate America it also can be expensive. Historic examples of the financial impact of multicultural missteps include Denny's, which was sued for racial bias in the early 1990s. The company spent a decade financing advertising campaigns and community relations activities to fix the damage. In 2001, Toyota released an ad depicting a RAV 4 sport utility vehicle as a gold tooth adornment worn by an African-American man. The Rev. Jesse Jackson launched a protest that eventually cost the company $7.8 billion. Early this year, Pepsi agreed to make a multi-million donation to the Ludacris Foundation, after dropping the rapper from an endorsement contract and facing a backlash.

Urban Outfitter competitor Abercrombie & Fitch came under fire last year for selling T-shirts with offensive statements about Asian Americans.

Daikoku described the Urban Outfitters incident as "one example of something that happens every day in retail. When the buyers make their decisions, it's related to what they think fits in their mix of products."

Brilliant said, "I don't think they're trying to be offensive.... The fact that they pulled the game is a sign that they don't really mean to offend anybody."

Barnard doesn't believe Urban Outfitters' misstep in an indication of incompetent management.

"Financial and merchandising savvy are somewhat separate from social views," he said.

Universal Studios was accused Wednesday of race-based discrimination in what may be the first lawsuit filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against a major Hollywood studio.

The lawsuit alleges that a white producer at Universal, a unit of Vivendi-Universal, fired Frank Davis, an African-American first-assistant director and 23-year-veteran of the industry, to replace him with a white assistant director.

"It surprised me," Davis said. "It was pretty blatant ... pretty out there and in your face." At the time, Davis was working for John Singleton, the well-known African-American director behind "Boyz 'N the Hood," "Rosewood," and "Shaft."

Davis's other credits include "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Seven," "Rising Sun" and "Courage Under Fire." Davis, who has not worked since he lost his job a year ago, "has put his livelihood on the line by filing a formal complaint," said Greg McClinton, a trial attorney in the Los Angeles office of the EEOC.

"It is very unusual for anyone in the industry to file a complaint because they are concerned they will be blackballed," McClinton said. "You let that genie out of the bottle ... and you will never work again."

The EEOC has no record of a similar lawsuit ever filed, said Noelle Brennan, an acting regional attorney for the EEOC. Universal Studios refused to comment.

Davis said others cautioned him about the career impact of a lawsuit

"But I was raised going to church," he said. "I'm scared of God, but I'm not scared about this. I had to make a decision as to whether I was going to continue to let [discrimination] happen or do something about it."

According to the complaint, filed in federal court in Los Angeles, Universal claimed it fired Davis for "performance issues."

"But we interviewed the majority of individuals on that shoot and no one had anything negative to say about Mr. Davis," McClinton said. "We talked to 10 or 15 people who were part of the decision-making process, who interacted with Mr. Davis every day, and none of them had anything negative to say about him -- including the director."

Davis and Singleton were more than a year into the filming of "2 Fast 2 Furious" when Davis was replaced, despite Singleton's objections, McClinton said.

As the first-assistant director, Davis said, he was responsible for executing the plan that Singleton devised -- a massive coordination effort.

"But there was nothing on this movie that was taking place that I had not been involved in with 'Terminator 2.' That was the largest movie ever made. It was truly demanding," he said.

Movie-making is a business built on relationships, where subjective judgments about artistry and capability aren't easily codified in a human-resource manual.

During his career, Davis said, he focused on building the skills that would silence those who might have questioned his technical ability or experience -- a not-uncommon veil for discrimination.

"I was prepared, so I could always act in an intelligent and safe way," he added.

In industries where job descriptions and performance expectations are, in part subjective, the EEOC looks to "the other factors" in assessing discrimination, Brennan said.

"Here, you had a first-assistant director, the only African American in that position, who had been chosen specifically by the director. As I understand it, the director makes those hiring and firing decisions. For the studio to come in and replace [Davis] with a white guy when there was no evidence that Mr. Davis was performing poorly is suspect," Brennan said.

"The other suspect thing is that, after Mr. Davis was terminated, he went to the Director's Guild. The guild got involved and attempted to remedy what had happened and the studio refused to engage in any kind of dialogue," she added.

Davis and Singleton did lodge a complaint with the Director's Guild of America (DGA), a trade union that represents directors in their negotiations and labor disputes with major studios.

"Our official statement on this is that the DGA does not comment on individual member disputes with employers," said DGA spokesperson Morgan Rumf. "Although we are disappointed that our attempts to remedy this situation were not successful, we cannot comment specifically on the details of this dispute."

According to the DGA, 4.1 percent of its 12,700 members are African American, 4.1 percent are Asian American and 2.5 percent are Latino. Women make up 22.1 percent of the DGA membership.

The studio has a human-resources system and mechanisms in place to address discrimination complaints, McClinton said. "But it is very, very unusual for anyone to notify HR."

"The industry is such that that the people you meet on your way up are the same ones you meet on your way down. A person who worked for you on one shoot may be a studio vice president the next time you see them," McClinton said. "Everyone is beholden to everyone else for their livelihood. No one wants to complain."

The attorney, who has been with the EEOC for three years, said "sexism and racism are alive and well in Hollywood: It is just more sophisticated and more covert," he said.

Kevin,

That first story about the Racist Hospital request... sounds just like a PSA that runs on WLS Chicago Talk Radio (890 AM) where a patient says he doesn't want care from a laundry list of people from "bad" racial/ethnic backgrounds...

People who talk about Blacks "victim mentality" really need to explain what the hell they mean and how they see it, whether they can substaniate it or not, as debilitating and WHY?

Sooooo, I invite WHATZGOINGON or whoever to really have a discussion on that idea and stop just throwing out buzzwords like that have some standing here!
I, for one, have a problem with using terms originated by the clear enemies of Black folk.

I have respect for the diversity of opinion regarding how we view our situation and possible solutions - our personal responsibility, etc. - but I'm not one to let any BullShcit! go unchecked!

What we have are a bunch of people making simplistic assumptions which ironically WHATZ accussed you of... I think he has done the same thing. Of course, I think you guys have beef from a while ago when he jumped to the conclusion that you were trying to call him a COWARD.

I'm for real, intelligent, BACK-YOUR-Schit-UP! conversations...

Anyway... let me stop before I get worked up!
This and any other hospital employs attorneys and public relations experts to know in advance the consequences of such actions. The hospital knew and they should be sued. I am sure that even though is was clearly against hospital policy, someone in charge took it upon theirself to honor the patient's illegal and immoral wishes. If this happened, I'm sure it is not the first time and there are probabley other instances that were just not found out. - Often this is the case with racism in this country and in the workplace, where it is not necessarily the company having a sentiment of racism/discrimination, but one or several individuals in authority working for the company taking in upon themselves to perpertuate it. On the other hand, this may be a "test run" to see if such a request would hold up in court and/or how much public outcry or negative backlash would come of it - there is a lot of this going on in this country now.
Giuliani, Clinton & 7 Other White Guys: What's Wrong With This Picture?
By Linda Bean

"Two days in New York that will inspire you for years."

That's the promise behind the "World Business Forum -- Leadership Speaks," a mid-May symposium that aims -- according to a really well-done brochure -- to bring together "nine eminent leaders and thinkers speaking on topics of utmost importance to the business community."

Of course, all nine eminent leaders and thinkers are middle-aged, white guys -- a circumstance that produced within the Baloney Meter a feeling more akin to ire than inspiration. Even the Supreme Court bench -- another group of nine who consider themselves rather rigorous thinkers and leaders -- includes women and people of color.

The World Business Forum has an impressive line-up: former President Bill Clinton, author Jim Collins, former IBM Chairman Lou Gerstner Jr., former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Professors Philip Kotler, Michael Porter and Jeremy Siegel, former General Electric Chairman and CEO Jack Welch, and Benjamin Zander, conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.

Impressive, but not inclusive, acknowledged a very nearly apologetic Penny Killebrew, spokesperson for conference organizer HSM Group.

"HSM is very concerned, about the lack of diversity in this particular conference. We would love to get a female speaker -- Condoleezza Rice would be wonderful," Killebrew says. "This is something, every day we are dealing with it ... seeing how we can add more diversity to our program."

Killebrew scores points for candor: HSM, an executive-education firm that targets CEOs and other top-level movers and shakers, was founded in Latin America and has done most of its work with leaders in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Spain.

The World Leadership Forum is its first U.S. venture and the firm clearly was unprepared for U.S. notions of diversity.

Baloney Meter, while quick to the phone, was behind four other callers who wanted to know whether the failure to include women and people of color was an oversight -- or something more ominous.

"We hope to organize one of these in Chicago in 2004," Killebrew added. "For that, we surely will have a more diverse group of individuals."

Killebrew and Carlo Rom, an HSM managing director, said the firm is seeking out additional speakers for the New York conference.

"We are in the process of extending offers to a number of others," Rom says, "but until we get a confirmation from them ..."

The nine-white-guy brochure is the first of several pieces of marketing material that will be mailed, Rom adds. "We have a marketing plan and part of that is getting people to sign up for the event."

The conference is sponsored by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ)-- where Publisher Karen House generally is considered a pretty powerful leader and thinker -- and the Fortune publishing group.

"We sponsor it as a package and the speakers were already selected," said WSJ spokesperson Robert Christie. "To answer your question -- 'did we have any hand in the selection of the speakers? -- the answer is 'no.'"

Zander, the conductor, kindly returned a call for comment.

"This is a non-problem," he said. "I don't think it really matters."

But what about the concept of invitation? What about choosing speakers and designing brochures that extend a clear welcome to women and people of color? What about looking beyond the traditional boundaries of leadership to embrace an astounding range of perspective, passion and insight?

"People should get over themselves. The white males should get over themselves. The females should get over themselves," Zander said.

In his presentation, he added, the emphasis is on "how all people will be brought together. That is the secret to my presentation. It is addressed to all humanity."

The conference, from his perspective, is an amazing illustration of the progression of social thought. Previous generations, he noted, turned to generals and soldiers for leadership.

"Now, they are bringing in the conductor of an orchestra ... and his job focuses on making all the voices heard," he said. "I feel as though I am representing a different kind of world and talking about a new style of leadership.

No women? No people of color?

It is with regret that the Baloney Meter states the obvious: There's nothing new about that.
". . .yet tell me I overexaggerate blacks as victims"

II see you haven't bothered to check up on those theories I suggested, even after you begged me to provide you with facts. If you did, you would understand the reasons labeled you the way I did. You'll see it's totally not the 'victimization" you think I am talking about (psychological).

Let me be extra clear on this. The articles you posted are certainly valid and it may work with your arguments with Lofton and those other posters, but in no way is it what I am referring to when I say you want to portray blacks in the country as perpetual victims. And in no way have I ever come remotely close to claiming that racism is not a big factor in the position of African Americans in society today.

If you use some of the resources that a "academic," a man who got his PhD at 35, and is considering applying to be a Rhodes scholar, you may begin to understand what I am saying and we can take this disagreement to a higher lever, if you can get that high..

That's okay. I never expected you to follow up. Talk is cheap.

And yeah, Nmag, a lot stems from other post that your boy directed towards me, but not that one. If you go back and check, I only respond to your boy's continued pestering and generalization of comments I posted as well as my persona. I never initiated anything, and I repeatedly asked him to show me the respect I previously showed him. But he couldn't handle it

[This message was edited by whatzgoingon on October 16, 2003 at 06:55 AM.]
Whatz...

Get A Clue! KEVIN is not "my boy"!

And that "respect" stuff falls on deaf ears with me, not because of whatever you and KEV got going but because I have my own opinions about that in general... if you READ up on my opinions in posts about that very topic you would know that.
quote:
... I invite WHATZGOINGON or whoever to really have a discussion on that idea and stop just throwing out buzzwords like that have some standing here!

BLACK VICTIM MENTALITY... Classism...

How do you feel when I say:
"That's okay. I never expected you to follow up.

I'm serious about having that discussion but you want to bring my name up solely as Kevin's "boy" or vice versa.

Don't bring my name up unless you want to talk to me about something besides your petty bickering.
Nam,

The respect stuff should fall on deaf ears for you because it wasn't directed at you. That posts was directed at Kev. The last point was for you acknowledging that some of the bad blood (if you can call it that) stems from other topics in which Kev and I have engaged one another.

I should have put his name on top. My bad.

"Your boy" is just an expression. Young people's stuff.

Calm down bro.

I am sorry I didn't read your post the first time, because I have learned from past dealing that you can't discuss anything rationally, and you haven't proven that you are capable of carrying on a civilized conversation. So usually, unless you put my name as a header, I tend to skip most of your posts, and didn't know that you were calling me out.

If you really want to discuss things with me, you are invited to get with Kevin41 and research those facts/theories Kev requested. As I said before, what I am talking about it is far more complicated than linking web articles about racism. My argument against Kevin41 and victimization is far different than that nonsense Lofton and his crew spews on this board.

If you are serious about it, just for you, I can come back and posts some info this weekend so you can find journals and books at the library which talk about the psychological theories I am talking about. I had assumed that the argument was between me and Kev and since he has not asked me for references and since he is a budding Rhodes Scholar who got his PhD at 35, he thought he could find the resources no problem.
You really need to read the journals, but I'll get you started.

Can't find anythinf inline about image theory or mirror image theory or enemy image theory but if you are serious, I can come back this weekend and provide you with references. But I am quite busy with classes, so if you don't want to discuss these theories seriously, don't waste my time (I already know where this is going and am probably wasting my time now).

Haven't read... all of what you wrote...

But you need to chill with that UNREAD stuff.
Basically, what you or I feel about this is a matter of perspective and/or emphasis. To play the "I'm right" game is not a virtue of rationality. You can condescend to someone that cares.

And you of all people shouldn't talk in those terms because when my "boy" (and I know what the expression means) made a general statement, you took it person and wanted to meet with him to fight!

Now tell me who needs to cool down and who has the problem with staying rational.

Emotions, passion and RATIONALITY are not mutually exclusive... That is unless you are wholly indoctrinated by Western Thought and subscribe to that WorldView where there is no Unity of Opposites.

Now... on to the meat...
The VICTIM MENTALITY is but one THEORY to explain human activities. I would counter quickly with the Stockholm Syndrome... if you can figure that out.

Anyway... signs and symptoms alone does not a diagnosis make. Let's speak about complexity and "what I am talking about it is far more complicated than linking web articles [or someone else's theories]"...

Complexity can tell you that there may be more than ONE thing at play. There is such a thing as Multi-Disorders and causation - i.e. disorders and perhaps the most apparent disorder may be due to other disorder(s). And like a person's physical health, their own diet or rather things they have control over are not the only factors contributing to disease.

So, my invitation is about understanding how all this relates and how accurate ONE diagnosis of ONE disorder is. (It doesn't take reading for me to understand complexity...)

You can come up with a 10,000 theories but if you can't tell what all those mean and how they are the exact description in their entirety to our condition then you are just submitting information without understanding or the wisdom to know if that is exactly the case.

The test is whether those theories are completely indicative...

You have a lot of explaining to do.

**RACISM is a factor Black Victim Mentality**

RECONCILE don't REGURGITATE!
Nam,

I don't exactly know how you got into this, but it is a public message board, sO I guess you have the right, but as for my previous altercation with Kev. I had read many times where he indicated with other posters that they wouldn't dare speak their mind if in his presence. plus the fact that i was a little upset with his repoeated disrespect towards me personally. I misread his analysis on something to mean that he was challenging me the same way and promptly took him up on his challenge, and apologized when I realized that is not what he meant. Is that all you've got?

Again, you still try to tie in what I say to Lofton and Co's stance that racism doesn not exists or is not a big deal anymore in American society (yeah right). It 's much deeper than that and maybe if I used another ethnic group as the example rather than ours, you could loosen up a bit and understand.

But I can't argue with you Mam, because you make everything so much more difficult than it has to be. I don't even understand what you are talking about in your last posts and how it is debating the point of Chosen Trauma, Learned Helplessness, Image theory.

I'll assume I'm just stupid and can't possibly understand your great debating skills. You know Nam, scratch everything I just said. Your logic is so overpowering that I abandon my previous way of thinking. Your analysis is right on the money. So there is no need for us to interact anymore. You win. I lose. Nam 2, whatzgoingon 0.

Kevin, my offer in providing you with facts, or in this case the reasoning behind my accusations towards you, as you requested still stands. If you will, i will provide you with the references so you can read them in full and will have plenty of ammunition.
C'mon...

Let's have a discussion... IF you are so damn smart educate me. Don't run!!!

Basically, you're telling me you're simple-minded... OKAY!

You started off by talking about something "more complexed"... Now, it's me who's making it tooooooo complexed.

Listen... you may know your A,B,C's and your 1,2,3's - i.e. recognition/recall of theories - but that definitely doesn't mean that you automatically know how to FORM WORDS, SENTENCES, PARAGRAMS, etc. or have the ability to ADD, SUBTRACT...

I think you get the picture.

RECONCILE don't REGURGITATE...
If you want to educate me on your theories (and that link was a dud... btw) YOU SHOULD BE SHOWING ME yourself what you think is the exact RELEVANCE and APPLICABILITY it has and if it is ACCURATE enough to describe EVERY aspect of BLACK MENTALITY...

You tripped when KEVIN was trying to claim what BLACK people (like him) think because in your opinion it wasn't REPRESENTATIVE of the whole. NOW, you and your theories have to pass the same test!

IT'S NOT ABOUT DEBATING...
It's about you thoroughly explaining WHAT and WHY you feel... Don't just claim it... EXPLAIN it...

I guess you're scared to do that!
quote:
Kevin, my offer in providing you with facts, or in this case the reasoning behind my accusations towards you, as you requested still stands. If you will, i will provide you with the references so you can read them in full and will have plenty of ammunition.

THEORIES... my brother are not FACTS!!
Get that straight.

And since KEVIN or YOU have to provide me with references... WHAT??? I'm I suppose to be unlearned or DUMB?

Who's ready to run away?

I asked you to have a real discussion... but since you're insecure or something you feel threatened so you want to see it as a debate and you're full of apprehension and notions of winning and losing and AMMUNITION.

Please!!!!!

Where are you in your schooling? What have you had to say about KEVIN's degrees? That should tell you what I think about you and what you think you know and your condescending Highly Educated tone towards me.

THEORIES... son! THEORIES!!
Let's talk about, discuss what fits and what does not and why and if it is representative...
"Kevin, my offer in providing you with facts,
*****or in this case the reasoning behind my accusations towards you*****,
as you requested still stands."

It's pointless in trying to discuss anything with you Nam, because even if 10% of your posts make valid points, it's really not worth having to deal with the 90% of the other stuff that comes with dealing with you.

i learned a while ago not to engage you in anything if it can be helped. You have got to be the most annoying poster I have ever dealt with, and it's not worth the space trying to debate anything with you.

You punked me bro. I couldn't counter your logic and ran away with my tail between my legs. Be happy.

P.S. I only said that becasue Kevin41 said me works at a University, and I would think he would have access to journals that the average person doesn't. If you took that as a slight to your intelligence, then that's your insecurity coming into play not my words.
Kevin 41

"Research theories called "Chosen RTrauma "or "Learned Helplessness "or "Image Theory" Read them carefully"

Read them and get back to me. It will explain what I mean when I say victims, and you will find that my points about victimization is not close to what Lofton, his crew or that other fellow is talking about. Trying to take the discussiont to academic terms, as that is what you said you wanted.

If you'd like, I can provide you with books or references that you can find in your university's library. it will be over the weekend though, because I have to dig up through a few books.
But... But...

You said you had all this info. And you took it to the level of confrontation.

What??
Do you have some false pretense that once you present your evidence via journals you and/or Kevin has access to (as if that info. is locked away never to see the light of day in a BOOK... etc.)... do you think the simple recitation or even your presentation was suppose to change my mind or anyone's?

You have INSECURITY issues because you believe YOU know the TRUTH and no one else does...(or at least not me)...

You are also soooooooooo INSECURE that now it's POINTLESS, because you don't want to deal with getting "disrespected" or whatever kind of feelings you wear on your sleeve...

"it's not worth the space trying to debate anything with you"

I asked you for a discussion not a debate.
quote:
You have got to be the most annoying poster I have ever dealt with...

Being "ANNOYED" that's an emotional state right?
I thought you was ALL RATIONAL?
What's why don't you give me, the brother who apparently have never heard of those theories, a brief synopsis of them and briefly why you think they are applicable to African-Americans...

Are these theories specific examinations of AA or some cross-disciplinary adaptations or whatever?
----------------
Alright... How about telling me what discipline they are derived from?
I read the articles...the first one I did not get that much out of...the second one was okay...but what does that have to do with the reality of black people? Even if they experienced learned helplessness as it is called, it would still be based on reality and not some delusional premise.....hell if I had to live in denial about something to avoid that condition.....i'd rather take the condition and work through it than be delusional just so have a better self-percpetion. Black people succeed DESPITE racism, not because it is not there....so i guess that is the point of this thread....to show that black people are grounded in reality when they speak out against racist bullshit in america....and not just suffering from some vague psychosis.......
I've grown tired of this, but I will ask you one more time if you want to seriously take this to an academic level as you requested. I said I would provide you with the journals and books so you can read these theories and the reasoning behind them, then we can confer and I will explain how it is relevant and your can counter my arguments. I urge you to read and interpret the journals so you can form your own opinion and be able to disagree based on your own knowledge of these theories instead of simply relying on my analysis.

I only linked those articles for that other person who expressed interests to give inkling about what these theories talked about, but that went I as expected it would. If you indeed wanted to get to the core of my hypothesis, it is going to take some reading and analyzing, and since you are an academic as well as a professor, I assumed that you would welcome a challenge based in academia, as you lead me to believe.

Arguing on a message board is nice and all, but I thought you really wanted to get down to it, because if you truly want to change things, you need to understand the reasons behind human behavior and why certain groups in certain situation do certain things. These theories help explain human behaviors of oppressed and oppressive peoples. They are not exclusive to the black experience and many of the problems that our community has are in no way exclusive to our community.

This goes beyond me trying to prove a point to Kevin41 about a message board argument. The more of my people I can get to at least look at the fact that there way be more than one way of thinking, more than one strategy in trying to get our people out of our present situation, the better it will be for diversifying our options and the better our chances get.
quote:
The more of my people I can get to at least look at the fact that there way be more than one way of thinking, more than one strategy in trying to get our people out of our present situation, the better it will be for diversifying our options and the better our chances get.

So you're saying Black people are "single-minded"?

If you can explain this from a "get down to it" academic standpoint, since you are soooo familiar with these theories, then you should be able to BOTH recite the components of the theories devoid of your opinion/analysis and offer your specific opinion as to how that applies and in what situation is does or does not.

What do you think is the source of the feeling of HELPLESSNESS among our people? Why do they feel helpless?

What do you see way as the [comprehensive] way out of our current situation?
Nmaginate asked,

What do you think is the source of the feeling of HELPLESSNESS among our people? Why do they feel helpless?

**That is all i'm trying to tell Watcher is that feeling is grounded in reality....i am not denying that it exists.....i'm just saying IF some blacks are actually experiencing that feeling, it is damn sure justified. It is another pathological by-product of the peculiar institution.....what des he want me to say, that medical article proves all blacks feel helpless....i don't think so....but he does not realize that the feeling could come from repeatedly trying to make efforts in a racist azz society with no results......I have seen it happen to really qualified black people.....
Another picture of the racial landscape:

FBI Probe Deepens Racial Split in Philly
Mayor John Street gets polite applause when he talks about policy on the campaign trail these days. The big cheers come when he mentions the bug planted in his office by the FBI. In the two weeks since news broke that Street was a subject of a federal investigation, Philadelphia's second black mayor has sought to cast himself as a man being persecuted because of his race, and the message appears to be resonating with African-American voters.

Stumping around the city this weekend, two weeks ahead of the Nov. 4 election, Street received raucous ovations from supporters, who hollered approval when he said the investigation is nothing more than a Republican dirty trick.

Confounding expectations, a poll suggests that Street's campaign against white Republican businessman Sam Katz has been reinvigorated by the bugging and by a subsequent series of FBI raids on city departments.

A Temple University/CBS3/KYW-AM poll released last week had Street apparently leading Katz, with 48 percent of likely voters to Katz's 41 percent. In the same poll a month ago, Katz had 46 percent to 40 percent.

The survey also exposed the sharp racial divide in the campaign, and how differently African-American and white voters have reacted to the bugging, which the FBI has yet to explain. Among blacks, Street's popularity has surged, with 84 percent saying they intended to vote for the mayor, up from 70 percent last month. Among whites, 72 percent said they would vote for Katz, up 1 point from a month ago.

Philadelphia is nearly equally divided between African American and whites, and voters in city elections traditionally split along ethnic lines. During Street's first matchup against Katz, in 1999, neither candidate was able to cross color lines to muster much support. Street prevailed by fewer than 10,000 votes, even though Democrats outnumber Republicans more than 4-to-1.

FBI agents hauled away boxes of files last week from the offices of Ronald A. White, a prominent African-American lawyer and one of the mayor's best fund-raisers. Agents also raided the offices of Shamsud-din Ali, a religious leader at an influential mosque, and served a subpoena on the city's Minority Business Enterprise Council, which helps businesses owned by women and minorities get city contracts. NEWS OF THE WEEK

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

* THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN HIGHER EDUCATION: At the conclusion of her ruling in the University of Michigan School of Law affirmative action case decided this past June, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor expressed the belief that a quarter of a century from now there should be no need for affirmative action in admissions to higher education. A new poll conducted for the American Bar Association shows that Americans tend to agree with Justice O'Connor's opinion on the long-term future of race-sensitive admissions. Some 70 percent of all respondents to the survey agree that in 25 years there should be no need for affirmative action in admissions to higher education.

The poll also found that 88 percent of all Americans believe significant progress has been made in school desegregation since the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education.

* IN SOUTH CAROLINA, BLACKS ARE THE ONES USUALLY CHARGED WITH LYNCHING: In 1951, after a black man accused of murdering a white taxi driver was pulled from a local jail and lynched by a white mob, the South Carolina State Legislature passed an antilynching statute. Lynching was defined as "any act of violence inflicted by a mob upon the body of another person." The antilynching law is still in force in the state, one of only four in the nation. However, almost all states now have legislation providing for increased sentencing if it can be proved that the motivation for a violent crime was racial hatred.

A recent study by the Associated Press has found that the South Carolina antilynching legislation, originally designed to limit vigilante justice against African Americans, is now used by prosecutors mainly against black defendants. The study found that although blacks make up just 30 percent of the state's population, 63 percent of all defendants charged with lynching are black. Blacks charged with lynching outnumber whites charged with lynching in 44 of the state's 46 counties. Some 271 blacks have been charged with lynching in the city of Charleston over the past five years.

In 1994 Kevin Garnett, now an All-Star in the National Basketball Association, was charged with lynching while in high school in South Carolina for a fight involving five black youths and a white teenager who suffered a broken ankle. The charges were later dropped.

Of the more than 4,000 adults charged with lynching over the past five years, only 136 people have been convicted of the charge. In most cases plea bargaining reduces the charges to assault. But of the 136 lynching convictions in the state over the past five years, two thirds have been against black defendants.

* IOWA OFFERS ASSISTANCE TO MINORITIES LOOKING TO BUY THEIR FIRST HOME: In 2002 only 4 percent of the people who borrowed money as part of the FirstHome program of the Iowa Finance Authority were members of minority groups. The program was designed to help low- to moderate-income families finance the purchase of a home. State officials believe that many black and other minority families do not apply for assistance because they believe they will be turned down.

Now the Finance Authority in conjunction with the state's Civil Rights Commission is offering a series of seminars to educate the public about the financial opportunities associated with the FirstHome program. Consumers will be educated about the home-buying process and information will be available about obtaining low-interest loans from the state. Some of the home-purchasing plans require no downpayment and in some cases closing costs are not assessed.

__________________________________________________________________

* THE PRESIDENT'S PUSH FOR BLACK VOTES MAY BE PAYING OFF: In the 2000 presidential election, George W. Bush received only 9 percent of the black vote. This was one of the lowest percentages of the black vote received by any Republican presidential candidate. Since assuming office, President Bush and his political operatives have concentrated on increasing his share of the black vote in his 2004 reelection bid. These efforts have included appointments of blacks to high-level positions as secretary of state, secretary of education, national security adviser, head of the FCC, and deputy attorney general. In addition, the Bush administration has increased federal support of the nation's historically black colleges and universities, moved forward on the long delayed museum of African-American history in Washington, and proposed federal funding for black religious groups that operate after-school programs for African-American youth.

These efforts seem to be paying off. A new poll conducted by Black America's Political Action Committee has found that 33 percent of all African Americans approve of the job Bush is doing as president. More than one fifth of blacks surveyed said that they would vote to reelect the president.

__________________________________________________________________

* BLACKS IN NEW YORK CITY FAR MORE LIKELY THAN WHITES TO HAVE WEIGHT PROBLEMS: A survey conducted by New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene found that large numbers of the city's residents are overweight, few eat the right foods, and very few exercise. The survey found significant racial disparities in the figures on weight. Some 64 percent of African-American residents of the city are overweight. More than one quarter of blacks in the city are classified as obese. In contrast, 47 percent of white New Yorkers are classified as overweight and 14 percent are obese.

* THE CAPITOL'S PORTRAIT GALLERY IS NEARLY LILY-WHITE: Senator Christopher J. Dodd Jr. of Connecticut is mounting an effort to increase the racial diversity of the subjects of artwork in the collection of the U.S. Capitol. There are approximately 800 works of art in the collection. Only 21 of these paintings or sculptures include depictions of African Americans and some of these show blacks as sharecroppers. There are only six portraits of black congressional representatives. Current rules of the House and Senate make it difficult to commission paintings of black members. For example, a painting of a senator may not hang in the Senate wing of the Capitol until the senator has been out of office for at least 21 years.

RECENT RACIAL INCIDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

* EAGLE, COLORADO: The National Alliance, a white supremacist organization headquartered in West Virginia, admitted that it was behind the distribution of 3,000 racist fliers in Eagle, Colorado. The town is the site where NBA superstar Kobe Bryant was recently charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old white woman in his hotel room. The fliers, calling for whites not to have sex with blacks, were placed on car windshields or left on front lawns in the community. (Associated Press, 8-13-03)

* TECUMSEH, OKLAHOMA: A black man was arrested on attempted murder charges for shooting a white man in a grocery store parking lot in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. The white man and a friend reportedly had gotten into an argument with the black man and racial slurs were used. The black man then fired four shots at the white men. One of the white men was hit in the shoulder. (Daily Oklahoman, 8-12-03)

__________________________________________________________________

* GOTHENBURG, NEBRASKA: A black man was attacked on Interstate 80 three miles east of the town of Gothenburg, Nebraska. The black man's car broke down on the highway in the early morning hours. Allegedly, three white men wearing cowboy boots stopped their pickup truck, got out, and repeatedly punched the black man. They then stole $60 from his wallet. Police believe that race may have been a factor in the assault. (Associated Press, 8-12-03)

* HANCOCK COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI: A Republican candidate for supervisor in Hancock County, Mississippi, was targeted with racial graffiti spray-painted on a billboard near his home. The graffiti called the white candidate a "nigger lover." (Biloxi Sun Herald, 8-13-03)

__________________________________________________________________

* DERBY, CONNECTICUT: A white man with an association with the Ku Klux Klan, reportedly offered an undercover federal agent money to burn down a house in his Derby, Connecticut, neighborhood in order to prevent a black family from renting the home. The undercover agent recorded on tape the white man saying that he "wished he could hang a nigger until he rots."

When police went to the white man's home to make an arrest for the arson plot, they found 23 guns and several crates of ammunition. The possession of guns and ammunition violated the white man's parole. (Connecticut Post, 8-13-03)

* MELBOURNE, FLORIDA: Supercuts, a nationwide chain of hair cutting salons based in Minneapolis, settled a federal race discrimination lawsuit brought by a regional manager in Melbourne, Florida. The manager, who was in charge of 76 stores in Florida and other southeastern states, said that he complained to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission when he was told by the company to "balance the platform" by trimming the number of black employees. Under the settlement, $3.2 million will be paid to black employees and job applicants in the region. (The Miami Herald, 8-14-03)

* TRACKING HATE CRIMES: For week August 10-16, the term "hate crime" appeared in the nation's major newspapers and magazines 162 times. This was up significantly from the 107 mentions of the term in the prior week.

So far this year, the term hate crime appeared in print 7,036 times. This is lower than the 7,623 mentions of hate crime from January 1 to August 16, 2002.

NEWS OF THE WEEK

* LEADING GOLF CLUBS REMAIN ALMOST LILY-WHITE: This past weekend Mike Weir of Canada won the Master's Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, displacing African-American Tiger Woods as champion. This year the tournament was marred by protests from women's groups who demanded that the Augusta National Golf Club admit women members.

In recent years blacks have been permitted to join Augusta, but at the present time there is only one black member. At many other stops along the Professional Golfers Association tour, hosting clubs are almost exclusively white. For example, according to a survey conducted by USA Today, at the Doral Golf Resort in Miami, Florida, there are 900 members. Not one is black. The Tournament Players Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, has 90 members. Not one is black. At the Indian Well Country Club in Palm Springs, California, host of the Bob Hope Desert Classic each January, there are 620 members. Only two are black. At the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, there are 900 members. Only 10 are black.

* IRS CRACKING DOWN ON ILLEGAL CLAIMS RELATING TO REPARATIONS FOR SLAVERY: In 2002 a Treasury Department investigation revealed that the Internal Revenue Service had mistakenly allowed more than $30 million in claims to tax filers who claimed a tax deduction for reparations from slavery. Some tax preparers in southern states were using the false claims in an effort to drum up business from black taxpayers who normally would not use the services of a professional tax preparer.

According to statistics from the Internal Revenue Service, as of the beginning of April, 108 people in Mississippi filed their federal income tax return claiming a credit for slavery reparations. The next highest state with such claims was North Carolina. Nineteen people in North Carolina had claimed a deduction for slavery reparations.

In March a federal judge permanently prohibited a 79-year-old man in Durant, Mississippi, from preparing individuals' tax returns. The IRS claims that the man had prepared 4,000 returns since 1996 that included a deduction for slavery reparations.

* RACIAL DIFFERENCES IN RESPONSES TO TREATMENT FOR HEPATITIS C: Researchers at the University of Maryland are conducting research to determine why African Americans inflicted with hepatitis C do not respond to treatments as well as whites who have the disease. Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease that attacks the liver.

Blacks are twice as likely as whites to contract the disease. Researchers found that one treatment using antiviral proteins was effective in killing the disease in 37 percent of whites but in only 21 percent of blacks. Another common treatment effectively treated the disease in 52 percent of whites but in only 32 percent of blacks.

Researchers at the University of Maryland believe that there may be racial differences in how medications are absorbed into the bloodstream and metabolized.

* PARKWAY, MISSOURI: An African-American woman who served as principal of a high school in Parkway, Missouri, has filed a race discrimination lawsuit against the school district. The suit claims that white employees were favored over blacks in hiring and promotion decisions. After she was removed from her post and reassigned to a teaching position, she was told that white parents had complained to administrators that she used poor grammar. The principal position was then given to a white man with lesser qualifications, according to the lawsuit. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 4-7-03)

NEWS OF THE WEEK

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

* SUPREME COURT TO DECIDE CASE ON RACIAL BIAS IN JURY SELECTION: The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments this past week from a black man who claims that the jury which placed him on death row in a murder case was selected on the basis of race. The black man had been convicted of killing a white desk clerk at a Holiday Inn near the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in 1985.

Attorneys for the state of Texas claimed that prosecutors had valid reasons for blocking potential black jurors in the case. But the defendant's lawyer said that blacks were simply excluded from the jury because prosecutors thought blacks would be more sympathetic to a member of their own race. The one black juror who was selected told prosecutors during jury selection that execution by lethal injection was too painless for murderers. He said that the state should "pour honey on them and stake them out over an ant bed."

* YORK MAYOR ACQUITTED OF RACIAL MURDER: Charlie Robertson, who served two terms as mayor of York, Pennsylvania, and is a 23-year veteran of the city's police department, was acquitted of murder charges this past Saturday. The mayor had been charged with second-degree murder in the 1969 slaying of Lillie Belle Allen, a 27-year-old mother of two who was shot down by a mob of white youths during race riots that plagued the city for 12 days.

The mayor was accused of handing out ammunition to white youths and telling them to kill blacks after a white police officer had been killed in the riots. The mayor admitted to shouting "White Power" at a rally prior to the killing but denied handing out ammunition or ordering that anyone be killed. The prosecution had originally planned to prosecute the mayor on conspiracy charges but changed the indictment to murder when they realized the statute of limitations had run out for conspiracy.

Two other white men were convicted of second-degree murder in the case. Witnesses testified at the trial that they saw the two men fire shotgun blasts at the car in which Allen was traveling. Another witness said that one of the defendants later bragged, "I blew the nigger in half."
