George Zimmerman found not guilty

SANFORD, Fla.--George Zimmerman, the man accused of murdering Trayvon Martin, has been found not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

The verdict is the culmination of a case that captured the nation's attention and will undoubtedly be imprinted in America's history. The not guilty verdict means the jury of six women found that Zimmerman justifiably used deadly force and  reasonably believed that such force was "necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm" to himself— Florida's definition of self-defense.

The women decided Zimmerman didn't "intentionally commit an act or acts that caused death" or demonstrate a "depraved mind without regard for human life" --Florida's definitions of manslaughter and second degree murder, respectively.

"Its means there was reasonable doubt," said Susan Constantine, a jury consultant and body language expert who attended Zimmerman's trial regularly. "They just could not put the pieces together."

The case has gripped the nation since the shooting happened on Feb. 26, 2012. Police initially did not charge Zimmerman with a crime, citing Florida's "stand-your-ground" law, which allows someone who believes they are in imminent danger to take whatever steps are necessary to protect themselves.

Protests ensued in several cities, including New York, by supporters of Trayvon's family. Many protesters voiced the opinion that Trayvon was targeted and killed for racial reasons. Trayvon was black and Zimmerman is Hispanic.

"You have a little black boy who was killed," said Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the parents of Trayvon. "It's going to be reported in history books and 50 years from now, our children will talk about Trayvon Martin's case like we talk about Emmett Till."

Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black young man, was tortured, murdered and grossly disfigured in Mississippi after being accused of flirting with a white woman.

In Zimmerman's case, State Attorney Angela Corey stepped in and charged Zimmerman with murder on April 11, 2012. Prosecutors however never argued that Zimmerman racially profiled the teen and instead said the teen was profiled as a criminal.

The five-week trial of Zimmerman, held in the same Florida city where Trayvon was killed, brought the facts of the case under a nationally-televised spotlight, with every moment captured on camera. More than 50 witnesses testified and on the first day of deliberation requested a list of the plethora of evidence that lawyers presented.

Some of the items include several statements Zimmerman gave to police, Trayvon's autopsy report and photos of both Zimmerman's injuries and Trayvon's body. Witnesses included forensic experts who testified about the angle in which Trayvon was shot, the position Zimmerman's gun may have been in, and where DNA and blood was found.

Other witnesses offered conflicting statements about how the fight happened, who had the upper hand when Zimmerman shot and who was screaming for help in a 911 call recording.

Eyewitness Jonathan Good said he saw Trayvon on top of and striking Zimmerman moments before the teen was shot. While Selma Mora, who lived a couple of houses down from Good, said Zimmerman was on top and told her to call the police.

A 911 call recorded screams and the fatal gunshot moments before the shooting. Who was screaming was a critical question before the jury.

The defense called nine people -- including both of Zimmerman's parents -- to testify that the screams belonged to Zimmerman. Both of Trayvon's parents and his brother all said Trayvon was screaming moments before he was shot.

In at times riveting detail, prosecutors tried their best to convince jurors that Zimmerman was a killer who "tracked" Trayvon, an innocent teenager, and murdered him before police arrived.

"That child had every right to be afraid of a strange man following him," prosecutor John Guy told jurors before they began deliberations. "This case isn't about standing your ground. It's about staying in your car."

Fellow prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda focused heavily on the state's theory that Zimmerman, frustrated by recent burglaries in his neighborhood, profiled Trayvon as a criminal and choose to take the law in his own hand.

"A teenager is dead, and he's dead through no fault of his own," de la Rionda said to jurors. "He's dead because another man made an assumption."

The majority of legal experts USA TODAY interviewed however said the prosecution had a weak case based largely on circumstantial evidence. Some said the state could possibly succeed if they appealed to the emotions of jurors. However, sympathy was not supposed to play a part in the verdict and defense attorneys reminded jurors of that fact repeatedly.

Mark O'Mara, an attorney for George Zimmerman cast Trayvon as the aggressor saying the teen may have been charged with aggravated battery had he survived the shooting. Trayvon, instead of going home, likely hid, waited for Zimmerman and confronted him, the lawyer said.

"Trayvon Martin came towards George Zimmerman," O'Mara said. '"That is not an unarmed teenager.'

O'Mara explained saying Trayvon used his fists and a concrete sidewalk to threaten great bodily harm.

He also focused on what he said was the state's failure to prove Zimmerman did anything legally wrong.  "Where is one shred of evidence to support the absurdity that they are trying to have you buy?" O'Mara asked pointedly in his closing statement to the jury.

Elizabeth Parker, a former prosecutor who is now a criminal defense attorney in Palm Beach, Fla., said the defense did a good job of humanizing Zimmerman .

"The defense did a phenomenal job of presenting their case through the state's witnesses," Parker said. "They were able to get George Zimmerman's testimony in through several witnesses --sparing him from having to undergo vigorous cross-examination by these bulldog prosecutors."

One such is example was the testimony of Sanford police officer Christopher Serino, called by the state and later the defense, Parker said. Serino agreed with prosecutors that Zimmerman may have been profiling Trayvon but said no physical evidence or witness statements contradicted Zimmerman's claim of self-defense and that the medical examiner's report supported Zimmerman's version of events.

Still, Valerie Houston, pastor of Allen Chapel AME Church in Sanford, said she hoped Zimmerman was convicted because he followed Trayvon and initiated the events leading up to the shooting. Many meetings in support of Trayvon and his family were held in her church and Houston joined those who early on asked for Zimmerman to be arrested.

"I feel that he's guilty," Houston said. "If he's not found guilty people will be disappointed--the African American community for sure."

Now that the verdict is in, people who share Houston's views will have to accept that the justice system believes Zimmerman is innocent.

However, despite now being a free man, Jose Baez, a Florida criminal defense attorney, said Zimmerman will likely go into hiding and be unable to live a normal life for some time.

"The end is not near for George Zimmerman," he said.

Al Sharpton: George Zimmerman Verdict 'An Atrocity' (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post  |  By  Posted: 07/13/2013 10:02 pm EDT  |  Updated: 07/13/2013 11:59 pm EDT

Al Sharpton called George Zimmerman's acquittal in the killing of Trayvon Martin an "atrocity."

Zimmerman was found not guilty on Saturday night. Sharpton, who served as both pundit and as an ally of Martin's family throughout the case, condemned the verdict.

"I think that this is an atrocity," he said. "It is probably one of the worst situations that I have seen."

He continued:

"What this jury has done is establish a precedent that when you are young and fit a certain profile, you can be committing no crime ... and be killed and someone can claim self-defense ... we had to march to even get a trial and even at trial, when he's exposed over and over again as a liar, he is acquitted."

Sharpton also called it "a sad day in the country" and "a slap in the face to those that believe in justice in this country."

Others joined in Sharpton's outrage. Fellow MSNBC host Chris Hayes, for instance, was even more blunt:

Goddamit

Because the whole damn country knows what this means.  The whole country knows that this is court-sanctioned open season on young Black males and Black people in general.  Also, because every Black person in America is locking and loading or preparing to be locked and loaded when confronted with this shit again.

This definitely changes my mind regarding guns, period.  I plan to have a permit to carry and stay strapped, because if some racist pig murders my teenage son . . .

Racist psychopaths in this country should not be allowed to get away with not one more Lynching of a Black child in America!

I am livid!

But, my instincts/vibes never lie, and I feel that the universe is going to right this wrong, hopefully right after the Martins break these racist pigs in a Civil Suit.

If you are an American gun owner after last night's verdict.....

You can be racially profiled......start (confront) and pick a fight (or an argument) with someone, shoot and kill that someone with your legally purchased and registered gun and say that you shot and killed that someone simply because you felt "threatened", you were scared and you had no choice but to defended yourself against the person that YOU started the argument, confrontation or fight with.

The person who (minding their own business) is being profiled, confronted and unarmed? If they decide to defend themselves and gets shot and/or killed by the person who initiated the confrontation, its their own fault.

Anytime, anyplace, anywhere.

Its just that simple.

And how do you define what "threatened" is?

Everybody has a different "threat" level but after last night, it doesn't matter anymore.

This is clearly now where we are in America ONCE again because its now once again, the Jim Crow era.

That 900 pound, invisible and unspoken elephant in the room called the "Stand Your Ground" law that surrounded this entire trial was validated last night for all gun owners, the NRA, gun nuts and White Americans throughout America last night with Zimmerman's verdict of not guilty.

The jury?

From the moment they announced the jury, I had serious reservations because it was an all-White, all woman jury that initially refused to say who the 6th juror was..... Black or Hispanic (she was Hispanic).

And this is a proper jury of your peers?

An all-White jury of women who were also as the media kept saying "mothers".

Who are more racist and hate African Americans more than White women?

Who are the caretakers and teachers of their children about White racism and being racist?

White women.

Who walks around everyday terrified and afraid of their own shadow, completely paranoid and in fear all the time of ANY Black person and especially young Black male teenagers who look or don't look (same, better or worse) like Trayvon Martin?

White women.

Throughout Sanford, FL and that surrounding county, there was not ONE African American man or woman, that could have been a part of the jury and I am supposed to believe that throughout that same town and surrounding community, these 5 White women and one Hispanic women were "credible".

And I am supposed to believe they (because they were told to) to remain professional and unbias and based their final decision on the facts placed in front of them and not their own individual subconscious racial assumptions..... thoughts, fears and analysis.

Now ALL African Americans parents need to be smart and have the "conservation" with their children regardless of where they live in America, about personal safety and the fear of being killed by someone with a legally owned gun once you leave home and White parents (who never did it anyway) don't have to....Plus the Black parents also have to worry about themselves getting shot and/or killed for no apparent reason.

That's what that verdict did last night.

The prosecutor threw this case

No Self-Defense laws in America say that you can be the aggressor, the stalker and the aggressor, and then back peddle and claim "self-defense"; the fact that this was not thoroughly pointed out by the prosecutions makes it obvious that the State of Florida was not even trying to win this case, and had every intention of letting Zimmerman walk.  The fact that this prosecutor did not chose not one Black person to be on that jury is also evidence that they intended for this pig to walk.

America's racist freaks are using America's justice system to do all the things they desire in their hearts to do to Black people in America.

IT'S TIME FORBLACK PEOPLE TO HAVE TO MEETINGS, TO DISCUSS SOME THINGS THAT WON'T BE POSTED ON FACEBOOK AND NOT PRIVY TO THE MEDIA.

In cities across the country, protests have taken shape in reaction to George Zimmerman’s acquittal of all murder charges in his second degree murder trial for the death of Trayvon Martin.

“Trayvon was murdered,” marchers chanted in Washington, D.C. “No justice, no peace,” they intoned according to NBC 4 Washington.

The Los Angeles Times is covering similar developments. Officials in San Francisco have noted that 200 people have gathered peacefully, yet taken to the streets, to contest the Seminole County jury’s finding that George Zimmerman is not guilty after two days of deliberations.

“We haven’t been notified of any disturbance,” an officer told the paper. “So far it’s peaceful.”

On Twitter, people have captured and shared these spontaneous outpourings into public spaces, where kindred spirits are gathering to lament the outcome to a controversial trial that some feel underscores a widespread belief that, for African-Americans, true justice is a fleeting ideal.

“The whole system is racist,” stated the signs of protesters at a BART station in the San Francisco region, driving that message home.

Similar protests have been documented on Twitter and news reports in Chicago, Florida and New York City.

At approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday, the six jurors assigned to the George Zimmerman trial returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty. It is a legal requirement for such cases in Florida that juries must come to a unanimous decision.

Earlier on Saturday, there was some speculation that Zimmerman would receive the lesser verdict of manslaughter, rather than second degree murder, due to the fact that the jury had presented a question about that verdict to the court during its deliberations.

Zimmerman maintains that he was attacked by Trayvon Martin and acted in self-defense. Martin was shot and killed during an altercation that took place in Sanford, Florida in February 2012.

Psychopaths...period!  Should not be allowed to get away with murder.  Racist or no!  But again...I feel ya.

Welcome to my world. Not a good feeling is it?    Take that feeling and multiply it by a thousand times as a parent.   As why I had to go into action once I realized that they let my son's murderers GO!    I decided then and there I would go into the bowels of the black community and pull this negativity out and do my best to save our youth.  Now if black folks went into action now and multiply what they are feeling a thousand times...this shyte will end ASAP.  So either we're gonna move forward with a mission of resolve or we will do what Brotha Cholly suggested and that's put our clocks back 50 years.  It is UP to us.  It is our choice..and our consequence to that choice.  So...which will it be?  But!

MY People, MY People....

Here again we look evil in the eye and atrophy.

Because we're bound and determined to assimilate into a white society-that doesn't even TRY to disguise it's hatred for us.....we soldier on toward living 'peacefully' among them.

Many of us say, that 'life is just to ambiguous' to seek freedom from oppression--and since 'black folks' are not 'monolithic', unity among our People is an unrealistic attribute to pursue.

Well if you want breaking news, I've got some for you. FREEDOM is 'monolithic', is uncompromising and exists with a jealous gate-keeper.

However 'diverse' the black community may be, there is but one path to freedom and that is a hell-bent one. Of course, seeing that it is a given--many of our people will continue to sit around and eat booga's while many in the world continue to laugh at how easy it seems to be to confound us, another one of our black children has been killed right in our faces, and like the school-yard bully who just knocked the stick off of our shoulder, he's daring us to do something.

I've never been ashamed of my people and won't start now, but it IS a shame that we don't seem to love freedom enough to die for it, or it seems, our children.

end of rant.

AFTER TRAYVON MARTIN VERDICT, PROTESTORS URGE MASSIVE FLORIDA BOYCOTT [UPDATE]

SUNDAY, JUL 14, 2013 12:55PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Hours after the shocking not guilty verdict was announced for Trayvon Martin's fatal shooterGeorge Zimmerman, protestors have called for a boycott on the state of Florida.

Immediately following the verdict, a Facebook page urging people to not support select Florida-based companies launched.

"Florida's "Stand Your Ground Law" killed Trayvon Martin's opportunity for justice. Stand Your Ground must be repealed and corporations based in Florida that profit from our patronage must stand with us against Stand Your Ground or we will make them pay in their pockets. Economic embargos and boycotts have worked to debilitate America's unjust laws like Jim Crow and alienate and starve countries like Cuba. A focused, targeted and public economic embargo of Florida-based corporations will force them to take a stand against Stand Your Ground in their own interests, The following post list the top Florida-based corporations who rely upon your patronage and support." (Boycott Florida)

The Boycott Florida page also provides a list with specific Florida-based companies and their addresses.

1. DisneyWorld, Lake Buena Vista, FL Meg Crofton, 2. Publix Supermarkets , Headquarters: Lakeland, FL Tupperware Corporation, 3. Carnival Cruise Company, Miami, 4. Royal Carribean Cruises, Miami, 5. DHL Express, Miami, 6. Darden Restaurants, Orlando (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Longhorm Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze, Eddie Vs, Yard House, The Capital Grille, Seasons 52), 7. Lennar Corp, Miami, 8. AutoNation Autonation.com, 9. HERTZ, Estero, Florida, 10. Office Depot, Boca Raton, 11. Winn-Dixie Stores, 12. SteinMart, Jacksonville, FL, 13. Friend Finder.com, Big Church.com, Perfect Match.com, Amigos.com) (Boycott Florida)

Various people upset by Saturday's night's announcement havestarted putting together petitions to rally in the memory of Martin.

Young men or women despite race or background should be able to walk down the road and not have to worry about being pursued or killed after standing their grown. No one will ever know what exactly happened that night. However, if you believe that the laws that allowed Zimmerman to be not guilty of the murder of Trayvon should be changed or repealed sign this petition and do not visit Florida for vacation or any other reason that could be avoided. Imagine Miami Memorial Day weekend without the supporters of the Martin family. What if families visited the house of mouse in California instead of pumping Millions of dollars into Florida tourism? Like Martin Luther King Jr. and the Bus boycott of the 1960s we can make a change with the power of our dollar and our voices. Maybe we can even prevent the folks of Miami-Dade from waiting over two hours to vote and hanging chads. (The Petition Site)

With the record amount of profits coming straight from tourism, a stern boycott would presumably spark a huge message.

So here's the thing. In Florida, if someone doesn't like the way you look, they can stalk you, provoke a fight with you, and then shoot you. All perfectly legal in Florida. So here's the question: why would any sane person go to Florida? "Florida" is a brand, and that brand is highly dependent on tourism. Damage that brand and you inflict real punishment on Floridians. If you care about what happened to Trayvon Martin, then boycott Florida. No vacations, no conventions, no business trips, no cruises, nothing. Maybe after a year or two of being shunned, the people of Florida will reconsider their barbaric law. Nonviolence. Boycott. (Daily Kos)

Nationwide protests over the verdict took place Saturday night and into Sunday.

Protesters on the West Coast massed, and in some cases marched, in four California cities, beneath the lingering sunshine that had already yielded to twilight and nightfall by the time the decision had been rendered shortly before 10 p.m. on the mostly quiescent East Coast. Mostly, the California demonstrations proved peaceful, although matters were marred by sporadic reports of stray violence and vandalism, including the halt of a passenger train, the burning of American and California flags, the lighting of small fires in city roadways, shattered storefront windows and the spray painting of a courthouse, as well as the damaging of a police squad car. (Fox News)

While Zimmerman was acquitted, he may have to go into hiding for a while.

Zimmerman showed no emotion as the verdict was read. Afterward, he smiled slightly and shook hands with one of his lawyers. Zimmerman may have to go into hiding and be unable to live a normal life for some time, said Jose Baez, the defense attorney who successfully defended Casey Anthony, a Florida mother accused of killing her daughter in a high-profile capital murder case. "The end is not near for George Zimmerman," he said. (USA Today)

As we all are still reacting to the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial President Obama has spoken.

The White House released a statement on Sunday afternoon from POTUS in  response to the jury’s decision. Read it in full below:

“The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy.  Not just for his family, or  for any one community, but for America.  I know this case has elicited  strong passions.  And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may  be running even higher.  But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has  spoken.  I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection  from two parents who lost their young son.  And as we do, we should ask  ourselves if we’re doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and  understanding in our own communities.  We should ask ourselves if we’re  doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives  across this country on a daily basis.  We should ask ourselves, as  individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like  this.  As citizens, that’s a job for all of us.  That’s the way to  honor Trayvon Martin.”

Powerful!

Zimmerman can now walk as a free man as it was decided by a 6 women jury that  he was not guilty on second degree murder or manslaughter. Since the verdict was  announced peaceful protest have began.

Trayvon Martin 'Not Guilty' Verdict Sparks Hoodie Sunday At Black Churches

Posted: 07/14/2013 11:17 am EDT  |  Updated: 07/14/2013 3:49 pm EDT

Rev. Tony Lee was in his car on Saturday night when he heard the news that George Zimmerman had been found not guilty on all charges in the trial over the death of Trayvon Martin.

"My phone and texts just started blowing up -- they all said, 'they found him not guilty,'" Lee said.

Realizing that he was going to have to preach in the morning, the pastor began thinking of what he would say to his largely black congregation called Community of Hope outside of Washington, D.C. Many in the congregation have lost loved ones to gun violence, and are simultaneously grieving and seething from what is being widely experienced in the black community as an injurious miscarriage of justice.

"I knew I would be wearing my hoodie while preaching," Lee said, "and I wrote to all the pastoral staff that hoodies are welcome."

As church communities gather on the Sunday after the "not guilty" verdict in one of the most racially fraught trials in recent memory, black pastors are offering both pastoral and prophetic responses from their pulpits.

Lee is preaching on the topic "Where Do We Go From Here," in which he uses theMartin Luther King Jr. speech of the same title.

"I wanted Martin speaking on Martin," the pastor said in a phone conversation with The Huffington Post. "When King gave that speech, he was speaking to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and so he was using a Christian framework to talk about systemic problems with the United States. And King ends that speech with a call for the United States to be born again."

Lee's scripture lesson is about the stoning of Stephen, a young man who is considered an early martyr for the Christian faith.

"There has always been backlash, there was backlash with the early Christian movement with the killing of Stephen, but there in the crowd witnessing was Saul who later became Paul," Lee explained. "We have seen great movement forward in America, but there is always backlash. We just cannot use this as an excuse, but as a motivation to keep moving forward. There is a great pain but there continue to be seeds of hope that our nation that can be born again."

Rev. Mike McBride will also be wearing a hoodie with the words "Alive And Free" while preaching at his West Berkeley, Calif. church, The Way Christian Center.

Preaching on the Ethiopian Eunuch in Acts 8, McBride plans to connect the scripture's reference to the broken body of Jesus and the mutilation of the Ethiopian to the plight of young African men and the poor in America.

"I want to talk about black bodies that have been mutilated and hurt but to remind the congregation that we do have good news and that power is to make us whole," McBride said. "The role of faith is to open the possibility of redemption in the lives of those that are broken, and I want to challenge our congregations to step into that role."

But congregants that show up at McBride's church will not only be getting a sermon, but also a training. "We will be organizing people right there during the service for direct action," he said. "We are going to be talking about humanizing the dehumanized and amplifying the value of life for all people, but especially our young black men."

McBride has been working on an anti-violence campaign called "Lifelines to Healing" that works on gun violence and gun policy. "Going forward we are thinking about targeting the 'Stand Your Ground' laws that are largely used against African-Americans," he said. "We need to talk about how the justice system continues to fail black bodies."

Other calls for people to wear hoodies to church came from Rev. Otis Moss III, who pastors Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago:

A jury has acquitted George Zimmerman, but we are not done demanding justice for Trayvon. Sign our petition to the Department of Justice today.

Attorney General Eric Holder,

The Department of Justice has closely monitored the State of Florida's prosecution of the case against George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin murder since it began. Today, with the acquittal of George Zimmerman, it is time for the Department of Justice to act.

The most fundamental of civil rights — the right to life — was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin. We ask that the Department of Justice file civil rights charges against Mr. Zimmerman for this egregious violation.

Please address the travesties of the tragic death of Trayvon Martin by acting today.
Thank you.

Last night, I witnessed history. I'm still having a hard time grasping the magnitude of what this day will represent in the history of the Black experience in this country. By the time you are born, Trayvon Martin's story will be etched in our collective memory. His name will be synonymous with Emmett Till. Trayvon Martin's murder will serve as an example of how little value is placed on the lives of young, Black boys in this place you will eventually call home. Tonight, my sons, a bounty has been placed on your head. Your price: Worthless.

Over the last 17 months, I've listened to Trayvon's peers, his fellow young people in Miami, express their feelings of rage, fear, and hopelessness reacting to this trauma. These children witnessed one of their own killed for no reason. These children have watched their identities being scrutinized, constantly criticized for the way they dress, the way they speak, the way they articulate being young and Black and urban. Trayvon could have easily been one of my students. They've asked, "Ms. Walker, what can we do to change the world? It has always been this way, why should I believe that it will ever be any different?" Staring back at their faces, knowing that they are at their wits end and out of answers, I've imagined you, years from now, asking me the same thing. I'm trying my best to craft an answer that is both actionable and honest, but I can't think of anything good enough to say that will erase those nagging questions, because I continue to grapple with them myself... and it still brings me to tears.

I should not weep for children who are not born yet, but I am afraid I cannot protect you. It's 2013, but I know I will have to teach you to divert your eyes. I know I will have to teach you how to take the natural bass out of your voices. I know I will have to teach you how to temper your passion... to box up your genuine outrage. I'd hoped by the time you came around Audre Lorde's quote, "We were never meant to survive" would not frame your existence. Unfortunately, after tonight, someone will still have to school you.

I am confident of your beautiful spirits. If you have even an ounce of me in you, you'll naturally be inclined to be vocal. I just don't want it to cost you your life. Even as a Black woman, it has been tricky for me to find that balance between maintaining my authenticity of self and "social respectability." I'm still trying to rationalize and reconcile how I will tell you that you have the capabilities to be absolutely anything you want to be, while simultaneously schooling you about what it means to exist as an outsider, bound within the walls of a country that despises your presence.

MY BEAUTIFUL, BLACK BOYS!!! I love you already more than you'll ever know, and you're not even here yet. At the same time, I'm terrified to bring you into this world. I don't want to believe that you are better off where you are. Tonight, as generations before me have done, I will continue to hold on to hope. I will continue to believe that we can and will survive this blatant assault to our identity. I will close my eyes and pray that we shall overcome, but I want to equip you with those invaluable tools that you will need if you are ever pulled over driving home from school; or watched closely while shopping in a store; or followed home after taking a trip to the local gas station for a mid-game snack: a bag of Skittles and an Arizona Iced Tea.

Rest in Peace Trayvon Benjamin Martin.

Just left the mall in Cali and they were demonstrating in the streets. I should have taken a picture but didn't think about it until now.  Anyway....black, white, latino and asians are all out some with hoodies on and picket signs.  Cars, trucks and vans are blowing their horns in support.  The newstation trucks are parked on strip malls adjacent to the mall.  I haven't seen these many people in different cultures marching since the civil rights movement in the 60s.  One sign said America let a murderer free....and this sign was held by a white guy wearing a gray hoodie.  I think the court system really focked up this time.  When you have white people in the hood wearing hoodies for a black kid, something profound is occurring.  But!

Please address the travesties of the tragic death of Trayvon Martin by acting today.
Thank you.

Los Angeles Trayvon Martin Protests, Mostly Peaceful, Reach Hollywood (UPDATED)

The Huffington Post  |  By  Posted: 07/14/2013 10:25 pm EDT  |  Updated: 07/15/2013 3:47 am EDT

Trayvon Martin Los Angeles

Demonstrators protesting George Zimmerman's not guilty verdict in the slaying of Florida teen Trayvon Martin reportedly shut down part of a freeway in Los Angeles Sunday night.

According to CBS Los Angeles, about 200 protesters stood on the southbound 10 Freeway in Crenshaw to block traffic. Protesters told NBC LA that the police fired rubber bullets in order to disperse the crowd and ended up arresting at least one person on suspicion of throwing rocks and bottles at an officer.

Ruth Fowler, an LA-based author and HuffPost blogger, was among one of the protestors on the freeway. In an email to The Huffington Post, Fowler described the scene as peaceful and happy.

"We were supported by cars who beeped their support, as did the local community who waved, gave us water, shielded us from the police with their cars, and were in complete solidarity with us," Fowler said.

The demonstration on the 10 freeway lasted from 6:20 p.m. to 6:44 p.m., officials told the Los Angeles Times, and the freeway has since reopened.

But when the Fowler continued on to Crenshaw Blvd. with the other protestors, things got violent. According to Fowler, police officers split the large march into smaller groups, and she was one of about 100 that headed down a side street. Despite the fact that they were peaceful and on the sidewalk, said Fowler, police still shot rubber bullets into the crowd.

"We stood there, about 100 of us, unarmed, peaceful, face to face with riot police, when the police suddenly started shooting," wrote Fowler. "My friend dragged me out of the way and the girl in front of me -- Liz -- and her boyfriend Jeff were shot in the face by rubber bullets." Fowler said in a tweet that she is 18 weeks pregnant, and that the rubber bullets narrowly missed her.

LOOK: Photo of the 10 freeway protest. Story continues below.

The 10 freeway protest was just one of multiple demonstrations that occurred in Los Angeles that day.

In East LA, a coalition of activist, artist and student groups gathered in a peaceful protest that lasted from about 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Héctor Flores, one of the protest organizers, told HuffPost Voces that the group was demonstrating for a number of causes, including racial justice, immigration and gay rights.

Protestors on Crenshaw Blvd. also reportedly marched into traffic at around 8:15 p.m., according to CBS Los Angeles. Footage from CBS Los Angeles' helicopter on La Brea Ave. showed protestors in the streets and on top of moving cars.

I hope that everyone will scour the net to find any and all protests over this bogus acquittal and post in here and on facebook and on any and every website you can, because there is a Media Blackout of the coverage of all of the protests that occurred and are still occurring all over the United States; in that I mean, the media is trying to only focus on the protests in California and New York as a way of Blacking Out the true number of protests actually going on or that went on all over America.

George Zimmerman Will Get His Gun Back, Mark O'Mara Says He Needs It 'Even More' Than Before.

George Zimmerman will get his gun back following his acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin -- and his attorney believes he needs it "even more" than before.

"'Yes. [There's] even more reason now, isn't there? There are a lot of people out there who actually hate him, though they shouldn't," Mark O'Mara told ABC News.

Zimmerman, 29, was found not guiltySaturday night on charges of second degree murder. Under Florida law, all evidence used in the case will be released, including the Kel Tec 9 pistol Zimmerman used to kill Martin.

O'Mara, who led Zimmerman's defense, said that his client plans to continue carrying the weapon and now wears a protective vest when he appears in public, ABC News also notes.

"I think that he feels truly in his heart that if he did not have that weapon that night he might not be here," O'Mara said. "[He] would have continued to get beat even though he was screaming for help."

The Justice Department says it is considering whether federal prosecutors will filecriminal civil rights charges against Zimmerman. Additionally, a number of civil suits are expected surrounding the case.

Another "Stand Your Ground" self defense case is coming up:

Black, 17, and Shot Dead by Concealed Carry Permit Holder in Florida.

Michael Dunn to go on trial for murder of Jordan Davis in September

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The man who claimed self-defense in shooting Jordan Davis to death will go on trial in September.

A judge set a trial date of September 23 for Michael Dunn.  He is accused of the first-degree murder of 17-year-old Jordan Davis last year.

[SUSPECT ORDERED PIZZA AFTER GAS STATION SHOOTING]

The attorney for the family of Jordan Davis says the trial should last about five days.

Defense attorneys argued for more time, saying they needed at least six months to go over all the evidence.

The shooting happened at a Gate gas station on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

Police say Dunn got into an argument over loud music with a SUV full of teenagers, including Davis.

Dunn asked the teens to turn down their music.  He told police the teenagers flashed a shotgun before he opened fire on their SUV, killing Davis.

Police never found a weapon in the teenager's SUV.

Dunn also faces three counts of attempted murder.

Another issue that came up in court today is money.  Dunn's defense team plans to file a motion next week asking the state to pick up the costs of issuing subpoenas to witnesses and gathering additional evidence.

The judge did approve a motion by the defense to secure additional surveillance video and customer receipts from the Gate gas station where the shooting took place.

"It will end when WE African-Americans put a stop to it."

This is very true. The truth is simply this, had a black man shot Trayvon...the news would have never went beyond his community. Had another black teenager shot Trayvon, other than his family and friends, no one would remembered who he is. But since the person who shot him was not black (and Trayvon was black), this made it a media bonanza. And they milked it for all it was worth (and still are). How many young black men have been murdered by other blacks since Trayvons death? How many black youths were slaughtered last year in Chicago last year by other blacks? Why do we not hear about their stories? Are their lives less significant because another black murdered them? Where is the out cry and indignation by race conscious Negroes about the hundreds who have been senselessly murdered by other blacks since the demise of Trayvon? No seems to have the desire nor need to discuss this. And why did Zimmerman go free? Simple: He had a very good defense team. Just like the Duke lacrosse players, Casey Anthony, O.J. Simpson, et al. It's as simple as that. While I think Zimmerman should have been convicted of something (since he instigated and initiated the entire debacle), I felt this was a hard case to to get a conviction and reality proved me right.....

HOW RUDE! Lester Chambers Attacked On  Stage After Dedicating Song To Trayvon Martin (DETAILS)

Emotions were running high after George  Zimmerman was acquitted in the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, with many calling the verdict an injustice, upset that the vigilante  shooter walked away scot-free.

But others are upset at the victim. And legendary soul singer Lester  Chambers learned that the hard way at a concert this weekend.

Chambers was allegedly assaulted after he dedicated a song to the slain  teenager, just hours after the "not guilty" verdict was read.

According to the Contra  Costa Times, a woman screamed "it's all your fault" before lunging  at the singer.

The incident occurred midway through Chambers' performance at the  Hayward-Russell City Blues festival, in California. Introducing a cover of  Curtis Mayfield's People Get Ready, Chambers said that if Mayfield were still  alive, the lyric "there's a train a-comin'" would be changed to "there's a  change a-comin," in response to Martin's death.

Almost immediately Dinalynn Andrews Potter leapt on to the stage – "like an  acrobat," according to Chambers' wife. "She had a crazed look in her eye," a  witness told the Times. "I saw the devil there." She shoved the singer before  anyone else could react; Chambers, 73, was eventually taken to hospital,  receiving treatment for "bruised rib muscle and nerve damage." Andrews Potter,  43, was arrested and charged with suspicion of battery, while Chambers "will be  up and running soon," according to his son.

Damn! Why are Zimmerman supporters still upset?

In any case, we're glad Chambers is going to be alright.

This black on black crime is not even the issue. And further when black people do kill or commit a criminal act against another black person, they are caught and prosecuted. Proof of which, look at the number of AA's in prison today.  This is about the long standing tradition of black life being disrespected and taken by people outside of our community and specifically white people.

Zimmerman forfeited ANY Legal Ground for Self-Defense the moment he began stalking this child in his truck who was walking alone at night, and further forfeited ANY Legal Ground for Self-Defense the moment he jumped out of his truck at this kid, and even further forfeited ANY Legal Ground for Self-Defense after the child takes off running in an attempt to get away from Zimmerman[a total stranger to Trayvon], and Zimmerman even further forfeited any Legal Ground for Self-Defense on his part by proceeding to get back in his truck and ride around looking for this kid, who was [Retreating] trying to get away from a TOTAL Stranger[Zimmerman] who had been stalking him by following him in his truck in the first place, is all the EVIDENCE ANY JURY needed to Convict.  Anyone that says any different are only doing so out of the shear racism and hatred they have for Black people, especially young Black males in this country or out of ignorance of American's most basic Laws of Self-Defense, i.e., YOU cannot be the aggressor and that you have a duty to meet force with like force, i.e., blow for blow, knife for knife, gun for gun, NOT, Gun for Blow.  That and the fact that it is only the Killer's interpretation of what happened that knight that even suggest that Trayvon even had the chance to defend himself, let alone be the one to strike the first blow.  Not to mention how all of America's racist deliberately gloss over the fact that ONLY Trayvon Martin was put in a position to have Grounds for Self-Defense, automatically nullifying any claim of self-defense by Zimmerman, therefore, even if Trayvon DID strike the first blow either time Zimmerman was in his face, it was Trayvon, not Zimmerman, who had reason to fear for his life, therefore, was the only one of the two who had Legal and Affirmative Ground of to Self-Defense.

only America's racists and America's houseniggers are trying to interject "Black on Black Crime" to deflect from the Jim Crow Police handling of this shooting, and the Jim Crow Investigation of this shooting and the Jim Crow Kangaroo Court Case of this shooting, and the "Ol Dirty South"Jury Selection in this case, and the 'Ol Dirty South Prosecution of this case.
