It looks like Obama’s open support for gay marriages has eased out things for the LGBT community to a great extent. Among many others, Queen LatifahQueen Latifah, real name Dana Owens, has also declared her self a lesbian.

After years of speculation about the singer, actress and songwriter, Queen Latifah’s sexual orientation, she has finally stepped out of the closet declaring gays as “her people” at the Gay Pride Parade held on Saturday.

Earlier this month, when Owens signed to speak on the Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival in Long Beach California, it was not certain whether she will merely support their rights or actually come out to reveal her own orientation. But on Saturday, as she addressed the attendees, the African American singtress made her pride known.

“Y’all my peeps (people),” she said, referring to the LGBT community. “I love you!” Queen performed for more than an hour, rocking the festival with her hits like “U.N.I.T.Y” and “Ladies First.” From the moment Queen told the crowd that she “has been waiting to do this for a long time”, it was clear that the event would be no ordinary. She later on added that she was “proud to be among her people”.

The 42 year old, Latifah thanked the crowd for their support and advised them to keep safe. Thank you to all my favorite peep guests who came out to support me. I appreciate it. I love you so much. Hope you had a beautiful time,” she said. “Y’all be safe whatever y’all get into tonight. Boys –- strap it up. Ladies –- strap it up.”

Her musical appearance at the festival was a proof about Latifah’s desire to not just be honest with her fans but to stand up and let people know who she really is. The kind of courage she displayed during her Saturday’s performance, has gained her an even deeper respect and appreciation form her supporters.

Latifah was long rumored to be in a relationship with a Hollywood Choreographer, Jeanette Jenkins. The two parted way in 2011.

Co president of the Gay Pride Parade, Pat Crosby also showed his excitement about Latifah’s performance saying that the worldwide debut of her “Pride” at the Long Beach “is a tremendous testament to the popularity of our celebration and to the strength of our community.”

After Set It Off, I don't know too many people who didn't think she was gay.

I have noticed, being from an older generation, there is alot more Black young lesbians than there was in my generation.  Then I realized that maybe there was just as many but they were in the closet.  A friend from my high school days went away to college, to grad school and then earned her Phd before coming home and out of the closet with our jr high gym teacher.  That was SHOCK!!

Hey Diamond. Yes people in the NY/NJ locales would see her out with her girlfriend OR she would be dressed very manly. What got me was that after she did "Set It Off" She made a statement to the effect that she stretched her acting abilities to do the role of Cleo (I think that was the character) and afterwards she had to go out and buy something really girlie, etc. etc. I thought to myself wow! You know people have known about her lesbian lifestyle for years, why BS with it at that time.

I'm sorry, but .... I just can't understand why something like this should be considered "news."

First of all ..... anybody that didn't know that the Queen was gay by now just wasn't paying attention!!    Or just didn't want to acknowledge it.  Or has been living under a rock for the past 20 years.

But ... it's really this phenomenon about having to "come out" and tell the world about your sexual orientation - and what seems like a requirement to have it celebrated, no less - that truly just baffles me!!

I mean .... I know that it's considered 'old school' but .... I just consider stuff about people's sex life private.  Regardless or whether a person is straight or gay ... who and what you do when you're doing somebody else shouldn't be anybody's business!!  No??

I don't want to hear about a straight person's sex life or sexually-oriented escapades anymore than I want to hear about a gay person's!!!  I just don't think that's anybody else's business.  But when it comes to being gay .... that community wants it shouted from the rooftops when it comes to their members!!  And they make sure that it's blasted from all media outlets whenever someone makes that admission!!  In fact, in some cases, they'll even taunt and try to shame people into making such a pronouncement!

And, of course, the media is on full hound dog-mode just looking for the next "gay thing" - whether it be a person or an issue or a discussion or just the mere mention of the word "gay" .... so that they can make a headline out of it!!

I mean, many people haven't noticed it ... but, ever since V.P. Biden (and then the President) uttered his 'support' for the same-sex marriage, the issue of homosexuality has been at the top of every news report (especially considering how many news anchors are gay and have 'come out' recently!!) in one way or another.

It's an issue that's carrying the same weight and is being talked about and discussed - as much if not more - than issues like the economy, the upcoming presidential election, unemployment, the war in Afghanistan, etc ... because something somebody said or did regarding homosexuality is going to be an 'up front' story ... and push all those other issues to the back of the line!!

Now, I don't have a problem with gay people .... but, I don't believe their issues are more important than the current economic situation we're going through - which affects ALL of us as Americans (yes, even them, too!!) ... and should be at the forefront of newscasts for months at a time.

Now, the Queen can be just as gay - or straight - as she wants to be!!  But, I'm sorry ... I just really don't care!!  Who she has sex with just doesn't concern or affect me ... as much as her as an entertainer (the music she produces), as a person (her philanthropy and all the things she does to help others), as an activist (how she presents herself as a representative of the Black community) .... NONE of which have anything to do with her sex life!!

Unfortunately, we now seem to live in a time where virtually nothing is any longer sacred, or secret or private or personal.  With the advent of 'reality shows' and cameras everywhere .. it's almost like people feel they have right to be able invade in other people's business.

But you would think that one's sex life is something that should remain in the privacy of one's home.  It shouldn't be blasted on national news stations.  But, alas ... it is.

My daughter said basically what y'all are saying.

I just never knew for sure because you know that anyone in Hollywood, famous, etc., rumors run rampant and the gamut.  I always thought that she was a little tough acting, but there are plenty women that act like that whom are not gay (lot of them are from New York), so I guess I thought it was "news".

Well, in the words of Roseanna Roseannadanna, "Never mind".

Kocolicious, I have to agree about Robin Roberts. And did Cheryl Miller ever come out?
