No, nothing so crude... I have respectfully approached women and told them, in complete English sentences, that I thought their outfits complimented them well, or that I thought they had a great fashion sense, or something particular about an item of clothing they were wearing, or even that I thought they themselves were beautiful. They genuinely seem appreciative of that sort of attention.
Ma'am, how do you like being complimented (if at all)? Do you respond favorably to catcalls?

I'm responding favorably when I ignore my urge to knock in some teeth and continue walking.
This is only one woman's perspective, but I think you are on to a good method.
The approach hints as to whether you are just seeing a piece of meat to degrade or not. I don't know if the men really feel that they are being complimentive, but whistles and boorish observations make me feel like a hamhock.
I've generally been of the attitude that if I wanted a stranger's opinion on my appearance, I would have asked for it, but one guy actually softened me up a bit.
He complimented me without staring at my ass or tits and without screaming at his friends to stare at my ass or tits.
He said excuse me and told me his name. He looked at my face when he told me that I looked good! And it wasn't followed by anything crude about wanting to fuck or whatever.
What a weirdo.
I wouldn't have noticed the guy if he had done the usual, but I've noticed since then that the respectful approach never ceases to catch me off guard. *shh*
I still won't holla back, but I've softened on my stance.
I can respect you if you at least act as if you respect me.
BTW, in Colombia, it's not just catcalls that women have to watch out for.
My wife was actually rather elated when I showed her this story.
Colombian sentenced for ride-by bottom slap
Fri Feb 24, 4:57 PM ET
BOGOTA, Colombia, Feb 24 - A Colombian man has been sentenced to four years' house arrest for slapping a woman's bottom as he rode by her on his bicycle, sparking debate on whether the punishment fit the crime.
Showing re-enactments of the incident, television news shows were filled on Friday with legal experts offering opinions about the judgement handed down earlier in the week by Bogota's district court.
Some said that to confine bicycle messenger Victor Garcia to his home for four years for smacking Diana Marcela Diaz's buttocks was excessive. Others said it would deter other men.
One program showed three models having their denim clad bottoms smacked so hard by a phantom hand it could be clearly heard by television viewers.
The women said that while the punishment seemed extreme, they hoped the case would mean they would be safer while on foot.
"It happened to me once," one of the models said. "I was walking very relaxed and a guy rode by on his bicycle and, 'ta!' He smacked me. I took off my shoe to hit him with it but he was already too far away."
