These were my original views.
Yes... I've come full circle

I've been thinking about love alot lately.

'Natures Intent'...
This was my westernized version of nature. Which was the 'Holy matrimony, biblio-old testament view...' Can't say that I hold on to that version of marriage as tightly any longer.

Dearest Virtue,
As you know, both of my parents are Nigerian, of Yoruba descent and actually from the same town....they are both children of fathers with multiple wives.
I have touched on this topic: http://africanamerica.org/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/26170384/m/6361000571/p/4

I just feel after observing the inter-relationship of my parents, particularly in the way how my dad interacted with my mother and with us, how strongly the effects of growing up in such household would have set the tone of my father's rather interesting viewpoints on family and the role of a wife and children over the last 30 plus years.
It clearly explained things to me....it is a topic that should be buried and remained buried.

Huh?
Herustar...what happen to the eariler stance? I am not too sure about the above scenerio...how willing would the wife be in having portions of the income NOW shared with a single mother even as the "willing" married man is not the father of the single mother's child. It does not even work so smoothly in cases where the man is really the father of the child in question..how more the above scenerio...hmm..a bit of a toughie...and simply attributing the resistance to being accustomed to "westernized ideals" is a bit simplistic, don't you agree with me?
folobatuyi,

Simplistic maybe, but I feel it is important to note the INFLUENCE of western ideals. In an individualistic/western society, the 'love' that people profess for one another is 'self-promoting'. Alot of times these relationships take on a 'us-against-the-world' attitude. They take on a 'we don't care about what our friends and family, or the community says... we're in this together'. But the 'together' they are talking about is, two individuals not concerned at all about the ebb and flow of the community. Their purpose in life is 'to themselves, for themselves'.

You speak about 'willingness'. Realistically, as long as our thoughts/desires/consciousness is aligned with western ideals, there will be no willingness. But collectivist ideals, with an African concept of love, would change the will of the individual, into that of the will of the community.

I'm touched, saddened and intrigued by your family's experience....

May I please ask that you not take offense to my further inquiry with others......

I have shared somewhat of your sentiment ...... without the unfortunate pain of the experience....

I simply would be interested in hearing of other positive experiences.....

if they exist....

Thank you for your response.....

Huh....fisrt of all...I am confused...where did this "African concept of love" ever come from? I guess parts of Africa outside of the area I am familiar with....because as well-known in Nigeria, the children and wives involved in a polygamous household are usually not the most loving or cordial feelings. Between the strife that exists between the various wives for the limited resources, love and attention from the sole husband, the relationship is more like a bunch of human pirranahs competing for a skinny chicken...scraps. Bad environment...kinda don't see love welling out of that household..no..not reallly! The strive between the wives themselves and their respective children is just as bad with the occassional beatings, fightings, poisoning and hexing one another with voodoo out of jealousy due to perceived preferential treatment by the man of the house who in generally seems to make the situation worse. The man of the house tend to favor one wive over the others, adding more kerosene to the fire. The typical household in this setting is so split that the siblings refer to anotherin reference being born of the same mother (thought of as true siblings) vs those who are not born of the same mother (enemies).
Again, to suggest that the reasons that this does not work to the influence of western ideals is way too easy...rather, it is more reflective of the very core nature of us humans...I strongly doubt it if you would be willing to participate in a polyandrous relationship.
Polygamy...is a thing of the past that seemingly served an useful purpose of provideing free and able hands to help out on the farms and whatnot....but thankfully there is no need nor demand for it here or in Africa. To me, the only reason why its ugly head keeps raising is because of the push of some greedy and lustful men who just don't seem to get the fact that it is a demeaning idealogy that subjugates women and children to a household of unneccessary strive and competition.
I mean really, is it truly a result of westernized ideals that one desires to be self-satisfying or "out for themselves" or is it really just reflective of the very nature of humans. One can argue that the very push for polygamy is based on self-serving ideas chiefly made by lustful men.
I say it is time to move on......
Frown Folobatuyi... I feel like I should not be asking this....
but if you please.... I'm only asking out of curiosity....

Folobatuyi.... your family's experience is horrible... I would wish that on no one... let alone advocate for it...

May I ask... are you aware if this is something strictly limited to your experience and culture or is it pervasive....

I'm asking because I've heard "tales" of polygamy possibly being a good thing.... and I hear nothing but negativity here in America... but I am conscious that the values here are heavily influencing that perception.....

I've heard that it can work..... that it has.... and in some places does.... this would make a polygamous relationship's success determined by the culture practicing it....

monogamous marriage is a good institution but abuse in this type of institution happens daily in all forms (believe me)..... but we don't denigrate the institution..... women and children become victims consistently.... past and present along with the foreseeable future....

I'm testing the waters on this board to see if anyone knows and can give a different account....

But personally...... I prefer to be the only wife of my husband....

but honestly, I've considered polygamy once before... but that was only because the man was an exceptional one...

So I'm on the fence with my viewpoint...

trying to get clarity....

IMO, the success, or lack thereof, of a marriage is determined by whether or not it works for the people involved. Felix, I hazard a guess that monogamus marriages have just as much chance of creating misery for everyone if they are managed incorrectly. However, I will submit that family dynamics are usually a complicated matter. The more complicated the family, the more complicated the dynamics. This is evident in the slow disection of the nuclear family today. There are more and more people with multiple linear marriages, and children in all of them. These "blended" families also create an intense stability problem for children.

Marriage can be a blessing for those who want it and are willing to work for it. But, the particular form it takes should be subject to those engaged in it, rather than outside forces. There are some people for which marriage doesn't work at all.

For me personally, I would prefer monogamy. I don't like to share... or be shared. Wink

Virtue,
My parents' experience unfortunately is not an isolated thing in Nigeria. Once I learned the language (Yoruba) and experienced the culture, I was able to share the experience the stories of my parents' peers who came from a very similar household...they were pretty much all the same...not very positive.
I guess the thing that boggles me is as such the strong will and independent spirits sistas in general, why would any sane sista would want to subject herself to such a scenerio. The women of my grandparents' generation...ie the one before the American babyboomers, just did not have the means nor were they allowed to gain the education that would allow them to do...so for them it, it was more of a neccessity.
Virtue, the meer fact you stated you would prefer to be married to one man not to be shared with anyone else further supports my point. Even with the "exceptional man" you presented, other factors include the fact the parties involved have a wide range of personalities, desires, and needs, making it virtually impossible to treat all parties (from the man's perspective) equally (as required by the Koran, for example).
Virtue, you actually do have major brownie points with me as you actually thought of participating in such arrangement out of true selflessness..a rare trait indeed...but this trait is what those who are currently advocating for this are looking for in their potential victim and selfishly proclaim that it is the western ideals that make it hard for ladies to agree to this weird and ancient idea...effectively placing the blame on the ladies. That is boardline manipulative to me.
I refuse to believe that it is simply an issue of western ideas...what is western about not wanting to share your spouse with another person?...I know I might find a rare man willingly to be a part of a polyandrous marriage.

I agree....
Again,

I am well versed in how polygamy is viewed as wrong... and how polygamy can be abused.... and how it is practiced negatively.... I could break it down for you myself....

but, is there any advantage? and by advantage I do not mean usery... where the man marries to fulfill his sexual appetite.... this is not marriage to me... or advantageous to the wife (wives)

I mean, just like in monogamous relationships there are good and bad scenarios..

Has anyone experienced or know of someone in a positive mutually fulfilling polygamous relationship?

Peace,
Virtue
Actually, to be more clear I changed my mind... only because I didn't want to enter a subject that I really wanted sincere dialogue on to be started with you.... someone who... ummmm.... which ummmm..

well...

umm... you know... I just didn't want the conversation to turn into ummm.... anything other than that...

and my conversations with you have become.... ummm... volatile potentially and.. ummm....

well...

you know...

No matter if people agree with it or not - GOD/Nature has already set the world up the way it's supposed to run.

All we can do is defy it and make things harder on ourselves.

Every baby is a girl before it turns into a boy - as a result, there are 5 times more females being born. It's so bad that some countries have to kill the baby girls because you may have to have several kids before you can get a boy and they can't afford it.

SO, this natural fact means that GOD/Nature thought men should have more than one woman and it's IMPOSSIBLE for every woman on the planet to even have ONE man.

Furthermore, one woman with a billion men would be dead in a week and mankind would end.

One MAN with a billion women will repopulate the planet in five years. Why do we generate 100 million sperm every 24 hours? What was God thinking? I think I know.

Sistas like the phrase 'it takes an entire village to raise a child' - yeah, MY village of wives, and kids taking care of each other.

When the white man took away our ability to house and feed ourselves, we lost our women. Now, the white man has them and they're addicted to his lifestyle.

And, our men are lost and abandoned and are degenerating into pigs.

And, our children are going to hell.

A man can't walk out in the morning and hunt all day/fish all day. He can't chop down trees and build houses for them.

All he can do is ask the white man to hire him.

The white man LAUGHS and hires his woman instead. That relationship will go down in flames.

I'm gonna paste something I wrote on the subject:

Polygamy & Polyamorism

It used to be like that.

Most higher mammals have it like that.

Most men still wish it was like that.

I used to be "in the closet" about it but, I'm out now. I have a much higher quality of women than when I allowed one female to punk me into monogamy.

But, I've been living this way for over 10 years now and there's going back. Now, I feel like I'm standing at my full stature, not bent over to please some cute, big butt, big mouthed individual.

Men are here to be leaders and the ones who aren't shouldn't breed.

My women know each other. My problem is that some would marry and some would not - tho they would still be my woman, they wouldn't be a multiple wife.

That's just an american thing. Third-world females have a better understanding of the necessity of ONE GOOD MAN over one man for every female - breeding all over the place, making weak men to fill the world up and do some of the horrible shit weak men do.

In Nature, when the male is noticeably larger than the female or has horns or tusks, etc. - it's because they must compete for the females. It's called 'sexual dimorphism'

Many males never get to breed at all, while the dominant, alpha-males have harems.

IT's God's/Nature's way of not allowing weak males to breed.

Now, in this artificial "human" society we have, ANYBODY can breed and that's why the world is full of cretins.

All three of the major "religions" did it.

The first thing I hear from women is "why can't women have more than one man?"

And, I always say "No, why DON'T women have more than one man?" - because they sure COULD get some weak men to line up and take turns or find some weak men that would co-exist with each other.

So, why DON'T most women do this after they open their mouths and say they want it, too?

They say it's a double-standard.

They get called "hoes" while WE don't.

Well, let's see - here's an acid test:

If your parents walked in on you with three people of the opposite sex, having a dirty good time, would you be ashamed?

(So, this has nothing to do with ME or society but with the individual.)

MOST women would be ashamed to be caught by their mother and father with three men at the same time.

The ones that ain't shamed, probably HAVE three men.

MOST men wouldn't be ashamed and his parents would be glad their son is not gay and obviously an ultra-masculine, alpha-male. "3 women, son?!?"

That's because men and women are NOT the same and we can get away with things THEY can't get away with and vice versa.

If a big dog attacks me and my woman, she can jump behind me - leaving ME to get bit. I can't jump behind her. She can confess to being afraid of anything, even a job interview - I can't be afraid of things or, she'd think I was a punk.

On the Titanic, MEN had to sink and let WOMEN sail off. I KNOW there were some punks there who would've pushed a woman aside and got in the boat - but, the OTHER real men yanked his ass out and let the women go.

Men are expected to carry things, open doors and pay for dinner, women are not. If they DO, they're considered real men and gentlemen - if not, they're pigs and dogs.

We don't HAVE TO but, we will lose respect, even our own parents will think we're cowards if we don't protect our woman, etc.

Men are FREE to be cowards and many are and would run and leave their woman in danger.

Women are FREE to be hoes and f*ck everything they want.

If you don't care what the public or your people think, then party up. But, we ain't the same and even other women will call you a hoe - in fact, they'll be the main ones.

Hoes don't offend MEN nearly as much as they offend other women. Go figure.

But, then again, cowards don't offend WOMEN nearly as much as they offend men. Hmm...

Whatchu smokin?

You became a boy because a sperm carrying a Y chromosome beat all the rest on the race to your mother's egg.

Your genitalia was once indistinguishable from that of a female, sure. But you didn't have XX chromosomes, unless you're an oddity. And if that were the case, you'd be called a genetic female--With XY and still with indistinguishable organs, a genetic male.

But, you were never a girl. You didn't "turn" into a boy.

In addition, NATURALLY, slightly more boys are born than girls.

In some area the newborn sex ratio is near 50/50, with boys still taking the lead. I think it's 51/49. And those events are considered an upset of the natural balance and are being studied.

I don't know who fed you that bull about five times more females being born.

Probably some dude with a hardon who needed to make up an excuse that'd make his philandering seem moral.

Usually when such rumors are spread, they are excuses for sexual behavior.

God wanted it this way!

He wanted men to enter a institutional contract with multiple women, and we know because he turned so few of us into boys and left the rest with vaginas. Just for our playing pleasure!

What about when considering the truth?

After you read a few studies or dust off you old Bio book and realize the newborn sex ratio natural favors boys, are you going to join the polyandry bandwagon?

For some reason, I think not.

I don't have anything against polygamy in a traditional culture for reasons expressed in my previous posts on this thread, but I am wondering where he got the 5 to 1 statistic as a rational for it.
Has anybody discussed PolyANDRY in this here post?

ElTigre: did you say "some countries have to kill the girls"???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

why would you support the cheapening of female life?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

If I remember the thread properly, polyandry was brought up(I know I mentioned it) but not discussed in length.

I don't think he is supporting killing girls. He just mentioned it as a 'fact'. Those same countries(in Asia) are facing a crisis though, men are outnumbering the women at exponential rates. The governments are actually trying to subsidize women who give birth to girls(and keep them) so that they have a reason(money) not to abort/kill them. The reason that girl babies are killed in those cultures is because of severe patriarchial cultural attitudes that value boy babies more, simply because they are boys. Not because of some out of balance ratio of 5 times more birth of girls.

like I said, I'm looking forward to finding out where he got those numbers from.

and, yes, i'm not for killing females - you should read my essay on women...

How is 49% men/ 51% women a 2 to 1 ratio?

I'm not stuck on numbers, but your rational is based on the numbers. It doesn't 'add up'.
