"PACIFYING THE MASSES"

On August 19th and 20th -- Macys' will sponsor the Jazz Festival.

The festival is a musical tradition of R&B, Hip Hop, and Rap revamped as a rendition of Jazz. Crosley Field, formerly known as Redland Field until 1934 was the former location of this event that brings folks here from as far away as California--that is, until its demise in 1970.

Riverfront Stadium then opened to the masses in 1970. In 2003 the new location became Cinergy Field. This year the festivities will be held in Paul A. Brown's Football Stadium.

During the many years that the festival has been held here--restaurants and hotels/motels alike intentionally hike their prices to garner the influx of blaq [i.e. my intentional spelling] dollars into their own pockets.

Locally, televised news channels run stories to valid the many accusations in blatant racial discrimination. And, of course, the local newspapers trailed in hot pursuit.

And then on April 7, 2001 Timothy Thomas was shot in the back--in cold blood--by Officier Roach who claimed the 19 year old from the Southside of Chicago had a gun. It turns out that the youth had a cell phone, instead. The police claimed the youth had 14 warrants which actually turned out to be misdeameanors--most handwritten into the judical docket system.http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4703574/

The festival came to a screeching halt and a boycott was then put into full effect. Local organizers of the boycott even sent out a national plea to all Black entertainers to also boycott the Festival specifically and all other City Concerts generally.

A great many stars, including Bill Cosby, mirrored the local pleas and requests and refused to appear, even those who were under contractual agreements.

From 2001 to 2004, roughly 3 years, the City of Cincinnati lost millions of dollars in revenues [i.e the reason for the boycott] as a result of the boycott.

Two months ago, almost to this date, Smokey Robinson appeared at the Kroger's off Mitchell Avenue promoting his "Soul in a Bowl" franchise. When questioned about the festival he said that he could not remember why there had ever been a boycott here in the first place.

This one misinformed statement from a non-resident of the area opened the flood gates and in ushered Macys to collectively organize the event and pacify the masses and again restart the revolution to garner those blaq dollars.

Because, after all, what self respecting black person would dispute the words of the notable Smokey Robinson?

Always Remember that: "Anytime We As A People Are Not Having Our WaySomeone Else Is Having Theirs...And It's Never To Our Advantage."

I appreciated the significance of the histroy you recited.

I was required to go to Cincinnati in the mid and late 1960s for OJT (on-th-job-training) at Taft Institute. Great town. Very clean town. I discovered it is the home of Ezzard Charles legendary boxer and former NBA heavyweight champion.

But it was there I was refused a room in a hotel that was housing our entire Pennsylvania contingent.

I went downtown to a hotel I think was called 'Gibson' or the like.

I stayed two weeks.

When I left the parking lot attendant refused to give me the much-needed receipt (for recovering expenses).

He said offhandedly, 'You don't need one.', and walked away.

Cincinnati was the gatekeeper of the segregation of the South. The city sits on the Kentucky border. All southbound public transportation imposed the 'Southern Standard' at Cincinnati.

Please exercise your political power in Cincinnati.

PEACE

What has the boycott accomplished?

When the city needs to provide services to the unfortunate how much does the absence of this money that would have been collected from tax revenues appear as the ghost of "what we could have done if we had more money"?
Unfortunately, it probably hasn't accomplished a reform in the police procedures of racism and brutality that permeated the city which allowed a white police officer to believe that he would be able to get away with shooting a black, unarmed teenager in the back and in cold blood. Roll Eyes

I guess you're right. Why even protest such a thing? Why try to bring awareness to police murders in our neighborhoods? For someone who has suggested in just about every one of your posts that the Black community should organize and take a stand in their own best interest, it's strange that you would condemn a city for trying to do just that. Roll Eyes

You can rarely have it both ways.
To James Wesley Chester and Ebony Rose.

Absolutely nothing was accomplished by the boycott. There were 2 or 3 different types of groups running around here claiming ownership and nothing what-so-ever got done til Smokey swept thru and ended that little unoraganized fiasco...

Officier Roach got away. But there is one redeeming fact---if you want to call it that--Ms. Leisure, Timothy Thomas's mother--is suing the city for millions. And, she may just win. But, certainly, no replacement for the untimely, unneccessary loss of her son...

And as you seem to realize, that's no redemption at all. The purpose of a lawsuit like that is to attempt to be "made whole" after being harmed. Obviously that doesn't quite work in wrongful death cases. But even if it did, being made whole only evens out the loss. The only actual good that can come out of a tragedy like this is if the protest efforts result in actual systemic change, so that it rarely happens again.

I feel apologetic, by the way, for not paying more attention to this case.
SOUL IN A BOWL

Fifteen years ago Smokey Robinson came to Cincinnati illegally promoting his 'Soul In A Bowl" Franchise. (i.e. He was being sued at the time).

This coon single-handedly ended the boycott in Cincinnati in June of 2005. Because when asked if he knew anything about the boycott he lied and said he knew nothing about a boycott, yet three years earlier (in 2002) he had cancelled his performance along with Bill Cosby and Winton Marsalis.

Eye guess promoting his franchise created a lapse in memory...

In June 2005 the radio (WBLZ) jumped all over Smokey Robinson's memory loss, while the city's boycott leaders stood by silently and watched the boycott end. Of course the story hit mainstream media and the Santangelo Group who sprung back into business.

The boycott was initiated to protest the brutal, unfair murder of Michael Thomas by police officer Roach on April 7, 2001 in a neighborhood called "Over The Rhine". Roach said the young man had what looked like a gun and he feared for his life. Turns out it was a cell phone.

Roach quit the police force in the city and ran to a neighborhood called Evendale in the suburbs.

In 2019 the festival is going strong; the Santangelo Groups' pockets are full of our LIQUID MONEY; and boycott leaders are nowhere to be found while the senseless murder of Michael Thomas has been all but forgotten...

The White racists machine's vilification and dismissiveness of Black life is so pervasive, that it also brainwashes Black people to be dismissive of Black life.

America's White-racist machine has a literal Army of Black Sellouts, Self-Haters, and Black Stabbers in this country and around the world to use to undermine any suggestion of Black life being deemed of value, and any gains won by the efforts of Black people, Black Activists, the Black Soldiers, fighting against the RACE WAR ON BLACK PEOPLE.

Yeah  I do recall when Smokey was what I thought promoting some type of  eatery campaign.  I thought he was launching a book or opening up a restaurant-it's been awhile.  And although I love me some Smokey Robinson music, Im not surprised this took place with him.  I mean he stood in silence when Berry was taking all the music rights and money from the artists at Motown. Right?  So.    And his born-again Christian rendition only came after he almost died from smoking too much crack.  He's a human, just like all of us, filled with perfect flaws.  But to really think about it, I never seen Smokey actually stand up for anything [if it's not about him]-except maybe standing on a Christian stage[but that's about him too].  So for me to break down why Black people continued to be sabotaged by our own people,  we have to take a close-reading look at the religion that bought us into slavery in the first place.     We as African people are lured into self destruction by so many outside categories- i.e. some of us have loyalty to the Europeans who kidnapped  us,  have loyalty to the religion that separates us as a culture/people  and have an unbending [loyal] belief in the European education that teaches us.   Once we break from that? And truly embrace who we are as people from the regents of West Africa, then maybe just maybe we can acquire some form of real unity....but!  Until then?  We will continue to be a part of our own cultural "genocide."   But!

Break away from these fuckers how?? These are the ONLY creeps we KNOW!! We've been terrorized by these weirdos since we've been on the planet. We've been making MONEY for them ever since those slave ships (nobody's ever seen) brought the ancestors here in 1619 (so THEY say).

Why in the HELL did Caucasoids go to AFRICA in the first damn place?? They weren't scared of Africans back then!! They fucked everything with a hole, threw babies to alligators, locked Africans in Zoos, which are now PRISONS.

We have to pay THEM taxes to kick our asses and slaughter our sons; not only that, WE FIGHT THEIR WARS. I think I've only seen ONE JAPANESE man in my entire life and that was in Bremerton, Washington. I've never seen a Vietnamese anything. All I've seen by the TONS are Caucasoids. They're in my bloodline just like they're in yours.

Most of us can't pay attention, let alone get the fuck out of here. AND where are we going if we ever decided to leave???

All we do, is bitch and moan; they keep their boots on our necks and take what little money we have. What country wants 40,000,000 Africans, especially as brain damaged as we all are.

I guess the only thing we can do is SHOOT back until they slaughter us all. Birching and moaning isn't doing JACK SHIT!!!!!
