I'm looking forward to the annual clash with Michigan and if they get past that, the game for the championship will be a great one whether it is Auburn, USC or other....

The most impressive thing is how they reloaded on defense after losing nine starters. Maybe we'll get a classic USC-Ohio State national title matchup? That would be some serious old-school!

Good point. Charlie Weis' biggest "win" so far was last year's 34-31 loss to USC. The Irish got a lot of mileage out of that one. Ty Willingham's fate was sealed at ND not because his teams went 21-15, but because they got blown out by USC 3 years straight.

Ty Willingham's fate was sealed when he first started because he was a black man in a racist system, I'm sorry to say. I stick with the Irish now because the guys on that team are Ty Willingham's recruits, including Quinn. Plus, my Granny loves the Irish.

huh? Ty did get a raw deal from ND, and frankly, Weis won last year with Ty's recruits, so I agree with your overall premise. But you say his fate was sealed because he was a black man in a racist system.

Well ND did hire him, and I'm pretty sure he was black the day they did so. It was a good hire and they should have stayed with him, but how can you castigate ND without at least acknowleding they did the right thing... before they did the wrong thing?

ND did the right thing, sort of. If you do recall, George O'Leary was the hired coach, but resigned after it was discovered that he falsified information about his academic and athletic achievements--Ty Willingham was next in line and thus, got the job. So, if O'Leary would have been still in place, this would be a moot issue.

I'm tellin' ya, if Ty Willingham went 21-15 with a least 2 wins over SC, he'd still be coaching ND. Not that I'm defending ND by any means, but arch-rivalries in college football cut deep. With all due respect to Michigan, SC is ND's only true traditional rival, and at a school like ND, you can't get blown out over and over again by your only arch-rival. Bob Davie was allowed to stay through his 5-year contract at ND mainly because his teams did well against SC.

I don't know if I agree with that Big Teach. Ty had an identical record as Charlie through his first season and they didn't extend his contract, yet they extended Weiss' in his first season. I think Davie was allowed to stay, despite his disasterous record because he was white.

I'll always contend that.

It all comes down to sponsorship... ND has a big TV contract... The NBC network put a lot of pressure on ND because they were not exciting to watch... they were fairly consistent in their play under TW, but not exciting... Even though I hate "the Irish", watching Mich. state "bitch up" last week made for good TV... Watching them lose to USC last year was an exciting game... as pointed out earlier...

As far as racism and the coaching job @ ND, it definetely played a role... had ND even had any African american assistant coaches before TW got there?? I am almost willing to bet that they will never have another... Racism is ever present and omnipresent... We as a people are judged more harshly than out white counterparts... I see it everyday... as one of the few African american sound engineers in sports... Worldwide...

TW should have never taken the job... as he was the 2nd choice (and the only one still available - he might have been even farther down the list) he should have "made them pay" for their mistake in not choosing him 1st...

Good point about Weis getting the quick extension as opposed to Ty getting the quick hook...I'm sure race was a factor. But I stand by what I said before - if Ty's teams did well against SC, he would have at least been around for the length of the initial 5-year contract. I used to think that a black guy would be the starting quarterback for ND. Tony Rice got the position and kept it because he was a winner, and he consistently beat SC in huge games. Of course, it didn't hurt that option-lovin' Lou Holtz was the Irish coach at the time.
