Obama Birth Certificate Released By White House (PHOTO)

WASHINGTON -- Per his directive, the White House released on Wednesday President Barack Obama's "long form" birth certificate, the document whose absence has long been at the heart of the conspiracy-riddled discussion over Obama's legitimacy to serve as the nation's commander in chief.

The move came as a surprise to the press corps, many of whom had not shown up for Wednesday's early-morning White House briefing. By the time word had spread that Obama would be making a 9:45 a.m. statement on the matter, however, the top anchors at all the networks had scurried into the briefing room.

Once there, they received a presidential scolding for their concern with "silliness." Obama began his five-minute statement with the complaint that he wouldn't be able to get the networks to break into their regularly scheduled programming for a speech on policy proposals.

"I know that there is going to be a segment of people for which no matter what we put out, this issue will not be put to rest," Obama said. "But I am speaking for the vast majority of the American people as well as for the press. We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We have better stuff to do. I have got better stuff to do. We have got big problems to solve."

"We are not going to be able to do it if we are distracted, we are not going to be able to do it if we spend time vilifying each other ... if we just make stuff up and pretend that facts are not facts, we are not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by side shows and carnival barkers," the president declared earlier.

The document released by the White House differs from the one that Obama's aides made public during the 2008 presidential campaign. Instead of a "certification" of live birth, this was a "certificate," clearly recording that the president was born on Aug. 4, 1961 in the Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital in Honolulu.

For years, Obama's circle of aides had resisted calls to make the latter form public, noting that a certification is legally sound and what any citizen of Hawaii receives upon requesting documents of birth. And indeed, for some time, that explanation -- supported by a a wide swath of other contemporaneous evidence - seemed to suffice.

But some who challenged the president's citizenship remained unsatisfied, and in recent weeks they found a high-profile megaphone for their cause: business tycoon and presidential flirt Donald Trump.

"This issue was resolved in 2008. It has not been an issue," White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said during a morning briefing in which he and other officials took care not to mention Trump's name. "None of you have asked about it, called about it or reported on it until the last few weeks ... [not releasing it] would probably be good for the president politically. Despite that, the president said he was struck by how this was crowding out the debate."

Last Friday, the president himself wrote Loretta J. Fuddy, the director of health at the State of Hawaii, requesting "two certified copies of my original certificate of live birth." Fuddy complied. Shortly thereafter, the president's counsel, Judith Corley of the firm Perkins Coie, flew to Hawaii to pick up two copies of the form. The trip was not taxpayer funded but, rather, paid out of the president's personal account. Corley returned on Tuesday at roughly 4 p.m. with the copies. The White House announced a "morning gaggle" for reporters shortly thereafter. One aide explained that they did not want to "hold" on to the documents for release on a later date.

Many members of the press confessed to being "stunned" as it became clear what was about to be discussed. White House press assistants handed out a six-page stapled packet of photocopies showing the new and old birth certificates as well as the White House's legal correspondence with Hawaii's Department of Health.

And yet it was the press that played a large role in forcing the administration's hand. CNN's Ed Henry had pressed White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on the issue just one day earlier, despite the fact that his own network had done a thorough investigation debunking the claims of the conspiracy theorists.

"There will always be some selection of people who will believe something. That is not the issue," Pfeiffer said when asked if Wednesday's move would silence the doubters. "This issue is, this is not a discussion happening just among conspiracy theorists. It is happening here in this room, on all of the networks, and it is something that every major political figure of both parties -- instead of talking about real issues -- is being asked about this. So the president decided to release this."

Sigh... I'm really starting to question the intelligence either of Obama or his advisers.  They really shouldn't have released the birth cert.  He released the birth cert under the ridiculous assumption that the right wingers are capable of being serious about real issues.  Here is something that will NEVER happen: a right winger saying, "Gee, I guess that ends that!  Now onto the real business of governing!"  No.  These people are entirely incapable of that.  They will find some other non-issue to fixate on.  That's how they operate.

I've been feeling for some time that Obama needs to let them bury themselves under their own bullshit.  Refuse to dignify the issue, let it fester, let the issue influence who they end up nominating.  Then -- in late September of 2012, I would have released the birth certificate.  Obama is trying to be the "bigger person," but by continuing to act like his opponents are capable of giving up on these kinds of issues, it continues to show me that he still doesn't get how these people are.  He constantly makes the mistake of failing to know what his enemies are capable of.  I am deeply disappointed that he decided to release the birth certificate.

There there my brotha.  It's alright.  My president has a bigger plan.  Trust me.  He is not an idiot like his haters are.  Who for one....will NEVER get near my President in terms of his intelligence and brilliance....and who for two...will continue to eat crow until and after the elections.  They are racists.  Bottom line.  And if they come back with sumething else STUPID....it will be apparent not only for America but for the whole wide world to see that all this blah blah blah rhetoric and untruths about my president are simply and CLEARLY racially motivated....but!  I'm just sayin

Tonight will be comedy night on TV and I will be sure to watch Bill, Sean and others "debate" this breaking news!

And in true Trump fashion, the Donald takes all the credit.

And I agree wih Vox2, I would not have given these idiots the satisfaction and have them continue this foolishness (in which many of them will continue to do so) since they are so racist and stuck in their hatred ways (they are now madder than ever and will continue to be in denial) and this does not prove or change anything for them and as usual, they will find some other bullshyt to complain about since the Republican's ultimate goal is the continued anger and engagement of it's base for the elimination of President Obama at the polls in 201I.

Now that his birth has been certified, now it on to, according to Trump, questioning his education.

I really wanted this birther issue to still be totally revelant in 2012 when President Obama wins re-election so I could watch once again all the heads explode....Especially this time since all their 4 years of bull shiggity efforts didn't work.

People... I have to retract my earlier comments!

When you READ a story in today's media, or watch a news show summarizing what happened, you see what happened through a filter.  Being at work when I learned of this story, reading the news of it was the best I could do.  But this evening, I got to watch Obama's FULL speech...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pL4N5_fYz0

In his own words, in their full context, you get to see what the thinking was.  As a result, I now believe he was absolutely right to request and release the long form bc.  His main point seems to be that he was pissed off at the media for letting this thing obscure critically important issues.  The media focused on Donald Trump -- who, by the way, is who Obama was referring to when he spoke of "sideshows and carnival barkers" (my favorite quote ever!) -- and his agitation of the birther issue -- and the media focused on that WHILE the budget/deficit debate was in full swing.  Obama gave his speech on his budget/deficit plan, and while it got SOME news, it was completely overshadowed by the birther stuff.

And it's true.  I never heard Obama's speech on the deficit plan, but I heard what Trump had to say about the birth cert.  Every day!

The budget/deficit battle is going to be a major issue, and the flashpoint of the main liberal/conservative debate on a number of levels.  Obama needs the American people to understand the ideas being debated, and that won't happen while this birther nonsense is sucking up all the air time.

Personally, I think that's a pretty good reason.  Obama is a better man than I would be in that position, and now I support the decision 100%.

Koco, this will be the ONLY time you'll ever get me to say this to you... but you are right, and I am wrong.  And I don't mind one bit!

Ok this commentary from TheGrio is spot on. Why President Obama shouldn't have had to show his papers.

Below is a video of the commentary. The only drawback is that TheGrio and The Apprentice Trumps show are owned by NBC. And Trump will still have his job there no matter what he says. Soo this makes all of this kind of a pat and a slap in the face at the same time.

You know, Vox ... Just a couple of days ago (literally) I went over to whitehouse.gov and submitted a comment to the President.  I told him, pretty much word-for-word, that only rich, White, old, Republican, men gave a DAMN about the budget deficit!!    And that NONE of them were EVER going to vote for him ... so he needed to quit pandering to them!!  I suggested that if he planned to get re-elected in 2012 ... he should start thinking more like the REST of us ... and less like them - and HIMSELF!!  Because though he wasn't White or old ... but the rest of that was beginning to look up for grabs!!

"Important" or not ... I don't know ANYBODY who is more concerned with the federal deficit than they are with their OWN budget deficits right now!!!  The people I know are watching their paychecks shrink because the price of everything is going up!!  They are concerned about their kids, paying their mortgages (or rent), they're trying to buy necessities and essentials ... they're watching the rich get richer and the education system failing their children.

The words "the economy" don't mean the same to "normal" people as they do to politicians - and, apparently, President Obama as well.  "Normal" people were the ones who got the benefit of the stimulus package that saved or created hundreds of thousands of jobs and probably close to another million foreclosures!!  I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of more people that would LOVE to see the $400 million that was added to the deficit in tax breaks to the rich - be added to the deficit as another stimulus package instead ... so that teachers, police and firefighters and other important city personnel were not being fired/laid off of their jobs today.

You may think you were "wrong" .. but one thing you said that was absolutely true is that NONE of those sorry-azz, ignorant, no-life-having, mentally-challenged people that wondered whether or not President Obama was a REAL U.S. citizen - will be satisfied or are ever going to VOTE for him.

He punked out and pandered (yet again) to stupidity, ignorance, pettiness, and White irrationality!!!    If he wants to get the attention of the "American people" ... he needs to look the camera DIRECTLY into the lens and say:

"The Republicans are trying to take you for EVERY DIME they can get and give it to their corporate favor- and vote-buying RICH friends and business partners!!    They are dismantling your civil rights and liberties one-by-one, state-by-state, and the reason you don't have a single-payer, all-inclusive health care plan is because EACH ONE OF THEM voted AGAINST IT!!  If it wasn't for every Republican Congressperson that is in office right now, you would have jobs, higher wages, lower credit card bills, the health care system YOU wanted, the mortgage crisis NEVER would have happened, and there would be more than enough money to pay for a good education for your kids!!  IT IS ALL THEIR FAULT THAT YOU DON'T HAVE ANY OF THAT!!"

... and I guarantee you that the people he wants to sit in front of their televisions and listen to what he has to say .. would be there front and center!!    And, also, he might actually be able to see even half of the "historic, record-breaking" number of voters turn out for him again in 2012.
