WTH?

In his Beaumont rally he has a soundbite telling folks not to eat Popeye's for breakfast.

I understand his strategy...
But it's curious.

He also had a Bill Cosby moment.
The only difference is he's potentially in a position were he can actually render aid, and not just chastisement.
THAT TYPE OF HONESTY IS BELOW MY PAYGRADE.

I heard one of the talking heads on MSNBC ranting about how ONLY Obama could get away with saying this. In other words....only Obama can get away with telling black folk to get off their lazy azzes by cutting the TV off, stop eating fried chicken, start doing your home work....Yadda Yadda Yadda. Its the "Personal Responsiblity" - you are your own worst enemy black folk- school of thought.

Hell...Bill Cosby might as well be running for President.

lets see....so far Obama did not attend some black events because his white advisers thought it was a bad idea and it might scare white voters. He answerd a question from a black person about the negative impact of immigration on black folk and he called it "scapegoating. He turned down an invitation to the SOBU. He denounced and rejected Farrakahn for the national audience......now this brother is chastising black folk.......

And Negroes on this forum are upset with me for suggesting that he will simply become a proxy for white interest..... 20

Which Black EVENT*S* were those? lol

The dynamic began the first day of Obama's presidential bid, when white advisers encouraged him to withdraw an invitation to his pastor, whose Afro-centric sermons have been construed as anti-white, to deliver the invocation at the official campaign kickoff. Then, when his candidacy was met by a wave of African-American suspicion, the senator's black aides pulled in prominent black scholars, business leaders and elected officials as advisers.

Aides to Obama, who asked not to be identified, said he stayed away from a civil rights demonstration and did not publicize visits to black churches when he was struggling to win over white voters in Iowa. Then, a month after Representative John Lewis of Georgia endorsed Clinton, setting off concerns about black voters' ambivalence toward Obama, the campaign sprinkled his stump speeches with black idioms and deployed his wife, Michelle, whose upbringing on the South Side of Chicago was more familiar to many blacks than Obama's biracial background.

Obama tells Blacks: Shape up
LYNN SWEET | Crowd cheers advice to turn off TV, skip Popeyes for breakfast

February 29, 2008
BY LYNN SWEET Sun-Times Columnist
FORT WORTH, Texas -- On the campaign trail, Democratic front-runner Sen. Barack Obama talks about how he would use the bully pulpit if president, and he offered a demonstration Thursday when he drew wild cheers as he told a mostly African-American crowd that parents need to shape up, turn off the TV, help their kids with their homework and stop letting them grow fat eating Popeyes chicken for breakfast.

"It's not good enough for you to say to your child, 'Do good in school,' and then when that child comes home, you got the TV set on, you got the radio on, you don't check their homework, there is not a book in the house, you've got the video game playing," said Obama while in Beaumont, in southeast Texas.

"So turn off the TV set, put the video game away. Buy a little desk or put that child by the kitchen table. Watch them do their homework. If they don't know how to do it, give them help. If you don't know how to do it, call the teacher. Make them go to bed at a reasonable time. Keep them off the streets. Give ' em some breakfast. Come on. ... You know I am right."

'I've got to talk about us'
Can change happen with words? That's a core question being raised about the Obama candidacy.

"I've got to talk about us a little bit," said Obama. "We can't keep on feeding our children junk all day long, giving them no exercise. They are overweight by the time they are 4 or 5 years old, and then we are surprised when they get sick."

Obama -- who exercises and is careful about what he eats -- said obese children need to improve their nutrition habits, invoking the name of a chain that makes delicious fried chicken.

"I know how hard it is to get kids to eat properly," Obama said. "But I also know that if folks letting our children drink eight sodas a day, which some parents do, or, you know, eat a bag of potato chips for lunch, or Popeyes for breakfast.

"Y'all have Popeyes out in Beaumont? I know some of y'all you got that cold Popeyes out for breakfast. I know. That's why y'all laughing. ... You can't do that. Children have to have proper nutrition. That affects also how they study, how they learn in school."

Obama has delivered "tough love'' messages before about personal responsibility, but he seemed to revel in his "truth-telling" while campaigning in Beaumont, on a day that also took him to Austin and Fort Worth in advance of Tuesday's crucial primaries.

Obama's Parenting Advice
Friday, February 29, 2008

While Hillary Clinton reminds voters that, if she wins, they can tell their daughters a woman can be President, Barack Obama is going deeper into parenting advice.

After a programmatic answer about issues in education to a mostly African-American audience in Beaumont, Texas, according to Shailagh Murray of the Washington Post, Obama asked, "Can I make this one last point?" and went into a riff about the role of parents.

"It's not good enough for you to say to your child, 'Do good in school.' And then your child comes home, you've got the TV set on, you've got the radio on, you don't check their homework, there's not a book in the house, you've got the video game playing.

"So, turn off the TV set, put the video game away, buy a little desk. Watch them do their homework. If they don't know how to do it, give them help. If you don't know how to do it, call the teacher. Make them go to bed at a reasonable time. Give them some breakfast."

As the crowd cheered, Obama asked, "Can I get an 'Amen' here?"

"Since I'm on a roll, if your child misbehaves in school, don't cuss out the teacher. You know I'm right about that. Don't cuss out the teacher, do something with your child. I'm speaking the truth. I'm telling you, I won't just tell you what you want to hear."

From there , he turned to nutrition.

"We can't keep on feeding our children junk all day long, giving them no exercise," he said. "They're overweight by the time they're four or five years old and then we're surprised when they get sick. And then we expect that they're going to get treated for things like adult diabetes that children never used to get...But now kids as young as 8, 9, 10 years old are getting it because they are obese. So part of what my health care plan does then is we work with parents, work with families to change nutrition habits.

"Look, I've got a 9-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old daughter, so I know how hard it is to get kids to eat properly, but I also know that if we are...letting kids drink eight sodas a day--which some parents do--or eat a bag of potato chips for lunch or Popeye's for breakfast -- y'all have Popeye's down in Beaumont? All right...I know! That's why you're all laughing. I caught you out. You can't do that! Children have to have proper nutrition."

For years, Hillary Clinton has been saying that it takes a village to raise children properly. Now Obama is taking it further and telling them how.

Bill Cosby is a comedian/actor/scholar. For him to criticize how black children and adults in the projects aren't speaking right, and he's the one that created Mushmouth from "Fat Albert," is kinda hypocritical.

The thing about Obama is that he is not from where we are from. At least not in terms of the urban black experience growing up. He is like an outsider in that respect. Cosby is an outsider too now that America has changed so much from when he was a kid in the projects. Both have an elitist view of inner city black folk.

Notice that Obama did NOT preface his comments with the usual....white, black, hispanic, Asians... 20 dat's cause he be talkin bout doz negroes pacifically Big Grin

But Noah....what would you have him do or say? Damn sure not that!

His WHITE advisers did that? Eek

Name those "NEGROES" and don't forget what the sister told your desperate, defeated ass...

"you have obviously not taken the time to read the many Pro vs Con discussions... regarding Obama's positions, speeches, [etc.]"

.
Just because you are a leading AA does not mean you are obligedto accept the invitation of the SOBU. 8
Now, I respect Tavis and the work he does. tfro

I acutally enjoy the SOBU with it's array of Black intelligentsia asembled. 3 But in the end..what does anyone leave with?

For many, it becomes simply a hollering fest.

There are 35 million Blacks. subtract those who are incarcerated (700,000-1 million ) those who are Jehovah Witnesses, those who are uninspired, lazy and indifferent.

How many AA's are registered to vote?

How many actuallyvote?

Obama hasto present himself as someone who is a leader for all citizens NOT just AA's.

He needs the confidence of more than just those in the Black community.

p.s.
I have stated this b4. I think Cosby is right. Many AA's live way below our priviledge and seem to be fighting to remain there.

Many foreingers, (including Africans) speak three, four languages. Many in the da hood, can't master one, but they and their defenders fight to defend that fact? 9

What is the prize for the race to the bottom? td6
Mirahjay,

That's why I said the strategy was curious. I agree he has to address a broader audience, yet I'm curious about his timing. It seems a little late, and almost as if he's swinging for the fences, and quite frankly the latest swing was a 'swing and a miss'.
Is someone in his campaign telling him that he's losing. If he keeps swinging unnecessarily he'll lose his aura of invincibility.
