NYC Agrees to Pay $3.9M to Family of Ramarley Graham for His 2012 Killing by NYPD Officer

ramarley grahamOnce again, New York City has decided to pay cash to the family of a Black man killed by police—this time a $3.9 million settlement to the family of Ramarley Graham, an 18-year-old Bronx teen shot to death by a white police officer in 2012 under highly questionable circumstances.

Richard Haste, the officer who killed Graham, never went to trial for the killing, and Graham’s name has been frequently cited by protesters during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations that have raged across the country after a spate of police-involved killings in which officers were not indicted.

In the Graham case, Haste was initially indicted, but a judge threw out the charges because he said prosecutors improperly instructed grand jurors. A second grand jury declined to indict the officer.

Federal civil rights lawsuits have become the option of last resort by families seeking justice.

“This was a tragic case,” said New York Law Department spokesman Nicholas Paolucci when the settlement was announced on Friday. “After evaluating all the facts, and consulting with key stakeholders such as the NYPD, it was determined that settling the matter was in the best interest of the city.”

Haste killed Graham in 2012 with one shot to the chest in a tiny bathroom in the three-family Bronx home where he lived with his grandmother and other relatives. Haste said he thought the teen was going to shoot him, but no weapons were found in the apartment.

The Graham settlement is the latest in a recent string of high-profile cases that New York has settled under Mayor Bill de Blasio after law enforcement-involved killings.

There was a $41 million settlement with the “Central Park Five,” who were wrongfully convicted in the 1989 rape and beating of a Central Park jogger; a $10 million settlement with a Brooklyn man who spent 15 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted of killing a rabbi, and a $2.75 million settlement with the family of a city jail inmate who died after what his lawyers described as a beating in which jail officers kicked him in the head.

All of the men in these cases were African-American or, in the case of one of the Central Park Five, Afro-Latino.

City Comptroller Scott Stringer recently said he would try to negotiate a settlement in the $75 million civil rights claim brought by Eric Garner’s family.

You would think that what it costs a city, town, state to have to go to trial and/or settle on cases like this makes it not worth the racism and racists that the city, town, state, police department(s) keeps coddling.

So, was this cop's racism, or racism fetish, psychopathy, or sociopathy, homicidal derangement, or serial killing worth $3.9 Million Dollars?  Evidently so, considering that this cop is probably still on the force or on some police force somewhere in America, which means that this cop alone costs the city $3.9 Million Dollars + his salary + his benefits.

You would think, that the citizens of New York, even those who are also racist, don't want to see their tax dollars squandered on cops' homicidal racism. And when you look at:

"There was a $41 million settlement with the “Central Park Five,” who were wrongfully convicted in the 1989 rape and beating of a Central Park jogger; a $10 million settlement with a Brooklyn man who spent 15 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted of killing a rabbi, and a $2.75 million settlement with the family of a city jail inmate who died after what his lawyers described as a beating in which jail officers kicked him in the head."

That's close to $60 Million Dollars; now imagine what a city could do with $50-60 Million Dollars.  That's $50-60 Million Dollars not going into the School System, the city's infrastructure, youth programs, senior citizens programs and activities, employment generating ventures for its citizens, etc., etc.  Hell, it's well over $50-60 Million Dollars because I'm sure the settlement amounts are not counting the attorneys fees.

Why should ALL the citizens' tax dollars be squandered like this, because some of the cops and citizens are racists.  And when I say 'squandered', I mean racist and/or homicidal cops committing such acts in the first place, not that it is money squandered on settlements to their victims families, because, really, even $3.9 Million is not enough compensation for deliberately and maliciously taking a human life.

It's a damn shame someone has to murder a member of your family, to enable you to pay your next bill without getting something turned off and buy a couple pairs of shoes, beg some YT for a comfortable place to live, hope the Klan doesn't want to burn it down,  and a car.

To a real millionaire, what these guys received combined is nothing to them. White people would like to see us all in the predicament when Lincoln "freed" the slaves, with nothing but the clothes/rags on our backs like the 'cestors. Some Republican would still see us as living lavishly.

Imagine what we could do if we were paid for the free labor they received from our relatives for 300 years.  We could boogie on down the fuck out of heyah forever and a day with a "Pucker up, kiss our ass" tattooed on our butt cheeks followed by a smile. That would be .We'd just have to hope no bullets hit our behinds while leaving the USA "building".

+ it will cost them eventually.  In Baltimore, they admitted that they can't afford to cover the cost of these lawsuits and, most recently (this week), the Mayor is considering additional punishment for the police involved in these cases....which is pissing off White people in the city, because that's their arm of White Supremacy, i.e. control over Blacks.

This needs to a Federal government issue...not just 'here and there' as we examine these cases from city to city or town to town.  Hopefully, the next AG will address these concerns and the President can issue some executive orders to fix some of this.

My solution: cancel police pensions and lock up these violent cops.  it wont happen, but that's what I would like to see happen.

Are you actually suggesting that police should follow the law too! That shocking idea is now a civil rights issue!
