Study shows women are supporting the family in 40% of households.
Gender roles have been flipped.
For many years, men were the breadwinners in households across the country.
Today, it's the woman’s paycheck that is putting food on the table.
A new study by the Pew Research Center shows that women are now the top earners in four out of ten households.
This compares to 10.8 percent in 1960, the study shows.
Among women who are married and have children, almost a quarter of them have a higher salary than their husbands, compared to 3.8 percent in 1960.
This comes at a time in which women are more motivated to pursue careers and have more job opportunities than they did 50 years ago.
Research shows that in 1960, about 16 percent of married couples had a husband with a better education than his wife and only 7 percent of wives pursued higher education.
Today, 23 percent of women are better educated than their husbands.
The Pew surveyed more than 1,000 adults for this study.
