Moms Are Top Source of Income

Study shows women are supporting the family in 40% of households.

Gender roles have been flipped.

For many years, men were the breadwinners in households across the country.

Today, it's the woman’s paycheck that is putting food on the table.

A new study by the Pew Research Center shows that women are now the top earners in  four out of ten households.

This compares to 10.8 percent in 1960, the study shows.

Among women who are married and have children, almost a quarter of them have a higher salary than their husbands, compared to 3.8 percent in 1960.

This comes at a time in which women are more motivated to pursue careers and have more job opportunities than they did 50 years ago.

Research shows that in 1960, about 16 percent of married couples had a husband with a better education than his wife and only 7 percent of wives pursued higher education.

Today, 23 percent of women are better educated than their husbands.

The Pew surveyed more than 1,000 adults for this study.

Are you part of a home where mom is the breadwinner?

Yeah, at least a certain one, especially considering that the article did not say just Black moms/mothers.

+just read the article.  Seems like a good thing.  It didn't mention hoodrats or babymommas so i have no problems with it.  In a marriage, the earned income from either spouse or one spouse, if there is just one earner, is considered community property in the courts, esp. in a divorce.  His money is their money and Her money is their money(remember when Whitney had to pay Bobby's back child support with his random babymommas from before their marriage??).  By comparison, single, never married mothers have no access to the babydaddy money, except for child support...if she can get....which can be iffy, judging by the dating down addiction that so many women have.  Can't get child support from a drug dealer or an death row inmate (before or after his prison sentence began).

And speaking of postings that got no replies.  I'll ask again...are Black women above criticism??

Well, legally, the only thing a "single" mother can't get would be alimony, other than that, her child has the same rights as the once married mother's child under the law, where when/if the relationship ends, he will have to pay child support until the child reaches 18 years of age or 21 years of age if the child attend college [if she pursues it], if he dies, her child is entitled to survivor's social security benefits, and all women do not get alimony when their marriage ends.  The estranged spouse/parent [whether it's the father or the mother] can be made to provide health insurance and pay for tuition, or at least his/her proportional share in either case.  And there are not many women, married, single, whatever trying to be dating anyone on death row, and many drug dealers have more money to support their kids than many working men [not that I'm condoning drug dealing] and often neither the child nor the mother want for much if anything and often get far more than what a court would award the custodial parent in child support.

+not many women?...Baltimore city has at least four  in a current case...the definition of the word "many" means more than one...is four greater than one?  Oh well.  Not sure about the finances of an urban terrorist, like drug dealers, ill have to take your word on that.  Maybe they are more positive than the daily news stories about the murders they commit.

I haven't read the study but the article makes some assumptions that are not necessarily the case.  The article suggest that women being better educated than their male counterparts thus command a higher income.    What is not discussed (which has been noted in economic circles) is that one of the ironies of the current economic crisis is that men are a better deal to fire.  So while a snapshot shows women incomes are higher, its not necessary because woman's income is increasing but rather the result men's income is decreasing.

Keep this in mind when wondering why there his a household tension between married people that cannot be classified as "baby momma drama".

I can see it from your perspective too, Muhammad, which brings to mind the fact that Americans don't seem to notice that is what is happening where wages are concerned, or that not only are men's salaries stagnating and decreasing, everyone's salary is.  It  also doesn't seem that people can relate it to being a direct result of American jobs and American production being shipped overseas to be filled by low paid, slave-wage earners with no benefits and no employee rights.  When they ship the last American job and the last American company overseas, at American tax payers expense, is when they will have Americans, the American workforce desperate enough to work for slave wages with no benefits and no employee rights.  It amazes me that the majority of Americans don't seem to see where America, and American jobs are really headed.
