Below is a conversation I came across on Black Planet that had a profound effect on me. The words of the response this poster got was so beautiful I thought I would share it with you as I notice AA.org is a forum where mockery of Africans is the order of the day. Please focus on the reply

Mockery of Africans
Created by klynx on Tue, Feb 18, 2003 @ 15:03 EST
I may be wrong but I feel that African Americans make mockrey of Africans than any other group. For instance, if i meet a white or hispanic, they will proberbly ask me about government or about our music, but alot of Black folck call me names such as Kunta kinte, of shaki zulu. ask me questions such as how many giraffs zebra`s I have back home, how did i hunt for food, how did i learn english. I just laugh and think they are the Ignorant ones and i Find the warmest love from those who take time to know and ask reasonable questions. I have even found African Americans who know more about my culture than i do. making fun of African accsents, thats another case. Once again, i may be wrong. as such i will like to recieve other people`s opinion

Mockery of Africans
Welcome to AMERIKKA... That realization shows that you have finally arrived. Racism & mockery runs rampant through-out this society... We the Black Amerikkans who's immediate lineage comes directly through the channels of Slavery here in this country have long been regarded as scums of the Nation... We are now and always have been rock bottom (the dredges), so far as prestige and influence goes... Every other group of immigrants that has arrived since our release from captivity has managed to come together, bonding in friendship, love & responsibility, so that group can advance as ONE PEOPLE... Other groups of like Cultures seek one another out either to help them get established, or in seeking help for themselves.. They all seem to know that together (in unity) they can & will survive... Some how, we missed that lesson...Can it be in our genes...
Since we don't have the power to oppress or discriminate against anyone, our only re-course is to show contempt, or to mock others that we feel are also as powerless as we are...And it's only towards those with no obvious influence, connections or money... Little do they know, that you will soon connect with a support group, while leaving them in your dust...
All have been mis-educated, and know that they were intentionally left behind in a state of confusion and discord, but still they find themselves unable to reach out to one another... Those that were able to advance can't seem to reach down to help... Instead, they too mock those less fortunate ones that can't seem to find their way...
The TV & News has always promoted negative images of you to us & again its shows the same negative images of us to you.. This is part of the "divide & conqueror" mentality.. You see, it is still working today... We all need to open our eyes to this and see that we are the same... The same People, in the same Places.. Just took different journeys to get here...
Not all African Americans are bad though, just some... Take care in your journey and step over the bad ones as you go... There are many good ones among us out there looking for you... Please look for us...
Peace be with you....

Although I can admit that most black Americans probably aren't exactly the most enlightened about Africa and Africans (or most other places, unfortunately), I GUESS I must not read enough of the threads on this board. I don't see the rampant disrespect that you say exists on this board for people from Africa.

Thans for the post. For the record, let me be clear that whatever posts that exist here that are offensive to anyone, but particularly to Africans, do NOT express the philosophy and opinions of the entire community or its founder. Smile

Now is the time to make real the promises of Democracy.
"Not all African Americans are bad..."

Exactly, nor are all Africans bad people, or any other ethnic group for that matter. There is bad and good in us all. Smile

I do not have anything derogatory to say about my African brothers and sisters. In fact, my interaction with them, has been pleasant and a learning experience. My goddaughter's father is from Ghana, and he is a wonderful man. I have a friend from the Congo who is brilliant, gentle, and kindhearted. So there is no mockery or hard feelings here.

Henry please know, whatever post you've read that sends a conflicting message it is not representative of all poster's to this site.

No people can unify when they only focus is on the things that keep them apart. -Len
I went to University with a lot of people from the continent of Africa. Because of my interaction with them I developed a deep kinship and respect for many of them. I met black people who were n't condition to believe they were inferior and had a positive sense of self.

When I was interacting with a brother from Nigeria, I gave him an explanation of our most acute difference. "You are descended from the victors and I am descened from the losers. That is why you are from Africa and I am from America." We kidded around with each other a lot but, we never gave in to stereotypes and we never put each other down.

Knowledge is Power
Ignorance is Oppression
To those that do not know, Henry took a post and totally misinterpreted it.
The belief that the sexual assualt of virgins, to include children and infants, to cure AIDS in South Africa, is being denied by him as White person's propaganda. To call these individuals sick has started a tirade of insults and defense of Africans throughout the continent taking us totally off the subject.

Furthermore, the child slavery and other issues that occurs through-out sections of Africa, that we condemn, is being taken by him as insulting in another post. It seems like we are not to condemn our African counterparts that performs these acts or to him we would be considered sell-outs.

Furthermore, this complaint in regards to us insulting him and Africans, and stereotypes, which by the way, never existed except in his own mind, is hampered further by the fact that in every response on this particular thread, he is insulting us.

As I would like to apologize for my initial post not being clear, as I have already have done, it was him that chose not to accept it.

It was him that chose not to understand the intention of my post and to continue on with bottled up feelings regarding our supposed inability to understand the complexity of the African continent and insult our mixed heritage.

As I do agree that it is wrong to stereotype Africans as much as I defend those of my religion from stereotypes, Henry is no victim of this at this site and I hope that many of you come to realize it.

Where did I do this show the post or the thread where I am denying what had happened please. If you need to defend yourself please do so but if you resort to lying I have no choice but to end up calling you a liar as well as a sell-out. Its very easy to quote where I have said something as you allege I have if you can not do this simple exercise and show where I deny the occurrence of the crime, you become a barefaced liar

Where did I say because you are condemning what Africans themselves see as a crime, I take offence and call it an insult because it is coming from you? Show this post or thread please or end up being officially branded a liar

Where did this take place. Cut and paste it because I promise you if you had apologised or retracted your statement where you called us TRULY SICK people down in Africa this whole debate would have come to an abrupt halt
This is what I said Henry and you chose to ignore what I meant by it:

**********************************************
Just because we are the same color does not mean a thing. They are truly sick down there but I am sure that to many, they do not think it is so.

Now, in the context of the subject, this is referring to the Africans who commit the act of sexual relations with a "virgin" no matter the age in order to cure their sickness. To engage in sexual relations with any child is sick and for you to defend this is truly sick.
***********************************************

So, you just like the racists I deal with on BET.com, choose to misrepresent what I say. You ignored my responses and decided to continue to defend and lead the subject astray.

Why I ask? After I told you over and over again that I was not referring to all Africans, do you continue to misrepresent my views?
What is the reason for you to dispute the facts that there are atrocities on a grand scale that occur throughout Africa that we here in America would not accept or condone?

Why is it that at one point you complain about stereotypical postings that truly do not exist and then show your stereotypical views of us?

AND YOU WILL LOVE THIS CHALLENGE: Cut and paste the perceieved stereotypical messages by myself. I will assure you that all shall see that you have unfortunately have taken them out of context.

You made references to our numbers in jail and you have made references to our divorce rate. All I have done was mention the atrocities of the genocide in Rwanda, child slavery in Western Africa, forced canabalism in Western Africa, the amputations in Western Africa and the sexual assualt of virgins in South Africa. Not once did I make a generalization about the people of Africa.

You are simply angry at the fact that I made sure that everyone knew that we are very different than Africans in thought. You brought up the white blood statements. It was you who later confirmed what I have said, we are different. It is now time that you lived with it.

Where, where , where did you say this or explain yourself. Please show the thread. You have made allegations that challenge my integrity. Either substantiate them by copying and pasting those allegations or put up or shut up. Either way officially you are a liar on this board
Hi Huey

I don't know whether you have the same laws in the US. Here in England a racist remark can cost you your job. It is not in your face but in terms of getting jobs it is very rampamt but hidden.

On the social front racism is hardly noticeable as well as it is classified an offence.

Minorities are protected by discrimination laws.

Finally the youths black or white, are heavily influenced by Black American culture because of the music industry. In terms of influence by black America musical culture I guess its all over the world and that is something we can be proud of as black people thanks to you guys
