I just saw Million Dollar Baby yesterday on HBO. I was disappointed and not sure what all the hype was about. Sure the story was tragic, but personally, it didn't evoke any emotion in me one bit - and I'm not ashamed to say that I've been known to drop a tear at a movie before. sck

I have no idea why it won best picture. I have no idea why it wasn't just another movie.

Morgan Freeman was good, sort of cast in a similar supporting role to his role in The Shawshank Redemption, but not nearly as impactful.

Me either; except Freeman' is good for those supportive roles to white males, wher he can utter, "get busy living, or get busy dying" comments of wisdom. I was especially 'displeased' with the character of the young black latina, who 'put' "Swank's' character in her predicament. The evil black woman, who would'nt fight 'fair'.
I think there was another discussion thread about this film way back on this board.

I really like Hilary Swank as an actor so i will see anything that she is in.

I think the boxing chick was Jamaican, but anyhoo... I agree. More black hats vs white hats, ho-humm. sleep

Seems even Clint couldn't quite make the break from Hollywood stereotypical scriptwriting in places.

A great film with Hilary Swank is INSOMNIA, with Robin Williams as Mr Evil himself. Excellent acting, excellent story, set in Alaska. tfro
I think the Oscar is about industry politics.

How many Oscars had Eastwood won? Several for director, and best picture.

Never for acting. None, though nominated 2 or 3 times.

How many Oscars had Freeman won? None, though nominated 2 or 3 times.

Nominated for 'best actor' twice 'Shawshank' and 'Miss Daisy, and once for 'supporting actor' in 'Street Smart.

The Academy was playing catch up, and make up for past 'oversights' for both men.

Both men are in their 70s.

They were paying off some while sacrificing the better work of others.

If he hasn't already, Spike Lee should write a film FOR Morgan Freeman.

Some kind of bio-story... not about anyone necessarily famous, but about one man's journey.

A non-Hollywood type screen adaptation of the true story/novel Life Is Good immediately comes to mind. Just the right actor, just the right age.

Do it, Spike! tfro
