Charlotte Hornets majority owner Michael Jordan announced Monday that he along with other key donors have invested $500,000 into the city’s literacy programs. The retired NBA player made the revelation ahead of the Hornet’s yearly day of community service, Swarm to Serve.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the grant – which is double that of last year’s – will be used to build and stock the shelves of 18 libraries in community centers, education non-profits, preschools and child care centers in low-income areas. The money will also be donated to other local charities.

Bank of America and Lowe’s contributed to the gift along with the Hornets. Employees and staffers from both companies were part of nearly 400 volunteers building the libraries throughout the city.

“When I took over majority control of the team, one of the biggest impacts I wanted … was to reconnect back to the community,” Jordan told volunteers at Time Warner Cable Arena June 20. “I felt [that connection] was lost a little bit with the previous ownership, and I felt it was very important.”

The former Chicago Bulls player is referring to BET founder Robert Johnson, who laid off the team’s community relations department in 2008. The result was severely reduced philanthropic efforts with no clear strategy.

Carolyn Hazeldine of Child Care Resources Inc. said Jordan’s celebrity will shine a light on literacy issues.

“He’s a local celebrity who can give to a lot of causes, but when he chooses to give to early literacy, it puts a face on the issue,” she told the newspaper. “It tells people in the community that this is important.”

Hazeldine’s company is one of four organizations benefiting from the hefty donation. The Charlotte Business Journal reports they include Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation, Freedom School Partners and CrossRoads Corporation for Affordable Housing and Community Development.

Jordan has previously dedicated efforts to charitable causes in health, hunger relief, the military, education and literacy.

I absolutely agree!

Considering just how much money Jordan has made, and how long he went without doing a damn thing for African America, including poor African American children and youth in North Carolina, or even his own damn home town.

0.5M SMH. Too weak. Can't buy love for less than $20M.  Show sincerity first. By the amount. That's real.  No shit. Serious. Your soul depends on this, Michael!

Michael, listen, by really giving more, $$,$$$,$$$,  you will exemplify a spirit of generosity in how we help one another and connect with one another. You want that?! Meet the challenge like a great man. By giving greatly, you will emanate real care to all. You still get to keep your millions and millions, but now you exemplify fatherly care to your people by creating institutions, for example, that economically lift up the youth. Will you do all that? If not, you should be bitch-slapped! Where the fuck are you? Here? In? On Court? Or elsewhere? Ball served!

Hell, how about including Blacks in your business, creating jobs for Blacks, underwriting businesses that serve the Black community. Doing such will do more than just a shot in the arm but will create economic institutions Blacks can thrive on and he still makes a profit.

The irony is, he does it all the time but with white people.

that is a razor sharp comedic line.

You're not the "top banana" anymore, Michael. How's those twins?

Congratulations to Cam Newton for keeping the promise to his mother by graduating from college. I just read he received a degree in Sociology from Auburn University. All I know, he was one sharp mamma jamma walking in front of that camera on his way to play in the Super Bowl. Intelligent, handsome young fella. I know you've made your mother PROUD! Congratulations to her too, for producing a son such as YOU.

Jordan use to have a gambling problem a few years ago.  I'm willing to bet his $500k donation might be equivalent to a few hand of Poker in Vegas for him.

It's kinda funny that the NBA people I listed above who gave the most HAPPEN to have been married to Black women at the time of those deals they made.  Coincidence?  I don't know but has Jordan or Kobe done to help their community.  Maybe we are just an eyesore to them now.

Like I keep saying, Black people need to stop putting Black people on a pedestal that do not deserve to be there, and Black people need to stop supporting and patronizing entertainers, professional athletes, actors, "Rappers", singers/musicians, and anything they 'endorse', and Black-owned companies, products, etc., and rich Blacks, that do nothing for African America, [and for Africa], for HCBUs, for African American children and youth, or for African American education, or for African American Institutions, and especially for African American Causes that are working to put a stop to State-Sanctioned LYNCHINGS OF young Black males, Black children, Black women.

Amen to the "patronizing."  Folks have a talent others are willing to pay to see. When it gets right down to it, they're people just as we. It's not good to IDOLIZE anyone. If you want to see, see; if not, don't. It's as easy as that!

LOVE HIM: NBA Star Dikembe Mutombo Opened A Hospital In Africa And Is Doing SO MUCH MORE

The The 7ft 2in NBA star retired in 2009 from professional basketball but he has not been keeping his feet up.

The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation is one of force in his home country of Congo1 and it’s unbelievable how much they have been able to acheive.

This includes opening a state of the art hospital that has saved countless lives. Here is a little more about the foundation mission statement and the hospital.

Our Mission Statement

The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation is dedicated to improving the health, education and quality of life for the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Foundation strives to accomplish this goal through an emphasis on primary health care and disease prevention, the promotion of health policy, health research and increased access to health care education for the people of the Congo.

Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital

The hospital opened in December 2007 and has treated over 120,000 patients. The hospital has a number of training partnerships. Medical schools such as the University of Kinshasa and the University of Lubumbashi send us their fellows, residents and medical students. Our bio-medical technicians have been sent to the U.S. for training. We have a relationship with the new medical school of the Protestant University of the Congo. In 2014, their first promotion will start their clinical rotations at the hospital. We also train student nurses.

Our major goal is to ensure the sustainability of the hospital as an institution providing high quality health care to people regardless of their economic conditions and to train a cadre of health care professionals who will extend the vision and the reach of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation into the future. To that end:

1. We continue to train our staff and have put an emphasis on training bio-medical staff to keep the equipment in good working condition.

2. We have developed alliances and partnerships to start new programs and get the resources necessary to cover the cost of the treatment of the patients. Some creative solutions have included providing seed money for a health cooperative, partnering with a microfinance organization and working with large local employers to put in place agreements for prepaid health care.

3. Our dynamic Board of Directors has launched a capital campaign to raise funds for an endowment fund. The success of this program will free us partially from the daily struggle of balancing our resources with the overwhelming needs of the people that we serve in the Congo. We continuously seek advice and resources from donors and other individuals who understand these issues and who share our common vision.

This work is very challenging, but at the same time so incredibly fulfilling. Each time we see a Congolese woman who has been ostracized by her community due to a fistula, and each time such a woman can rejoin her community after surgical treatment at the hospital, we celebrate. We also cry when we see children and adults die from health conditions that could have been easily prevented or treated.

You have to learn more here.http://www.dmf.org

RESPECT!
