Democrats failed to muster the 60 votes needed Tuesday night to advance a $447 billion job creation and tax bill that President Barack Obama had argued was desperately needed.

At least two Democrats voted with Republican senators to continue debate, essentially killing the bill in its current form.

“I can’t support this bill because it represents billions of dollars in new spending and more taxes,” said Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., explaining his “no” vote on the motion to end debate and move to a final vote on passage of the bill.

Nelson is facing a tough re-election battle next year in a state where Obama got 42 percent of the vote in 2008.

Also facing a re-election battle in 2012 is another Democrat who voted "no," Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, a state Obama barely lost in 2008.

The Senate was holding the vote open until Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H. returned from a trip to cast her vote, but the outcome was clear once 40 senators voted against ending debate.

her job creation proposals and would have imposed a $453 billion tax increase.

Ben Nelson was the main DEMOCRAT (or so he calls himself!) that REFUSED to vote for the health care bill if it was going to have a public-option in it!!!  In fact, he held up the eventual passing vote for HOURS until he was able to EXTORT what was essentially a big-money payoff specifically to his state of Nebraska, before he would agree to be that 60th vote needed to put the bill on the floor.

He is such an asshole!!  And I hope FINALLY, this time, he will be defeated in his re-election bid.

I have to say, though, although I'm not personally over-excited by this "new and improved" President Obama .... he IS actually talking a lot tougher and trying to 'duke it out' with the Republicans publicly and show the American public their flaws ... much better than he started out doing!!!

Hopefully he's convincing to those that need to be convinced .. and his plan has not come 'too little, too late' to be effective.  I like him better than the "old" Obama, though!!
