I had this discussion last night with one of my friends. What upsets me overall is the lack of creativity and individuality in hip hop today. Its like everybody is just trying to imitate whats popular right now. I know thats not the case OVERALL in hip hop, but those are the people that Cathy Hughes chooses to play on her radio station, and those are the people that the BET DJ's choose to showcase. Consequently, a message is sent to the hip hop community that if you want to make it big, you've gotta be a gangsta or a bitch or a hoe or call the women hoes and say I'm the baddest mutha in the world.

I love Sirius radio, channel 43 Backspin, cause they play old school hits all day so I can listen to a more balanced flava of hip hop.

But today, people like Cathy Hughes - who controls Radio One - could send a message by backing and supporting good artists who don't say things other than "You just want to be me" or "Fuck that bitch", but instead these people in power choose to do nothing to help with the situation.

I'm not a fan of Jill Scott in particular, and I don't hhave a problem with there being songs that talk about bbitches and hoes in hip hop. But to endorse that the hip hop culture is that all girls are video hoes sends lies to America and to the hip hop culture about the hip hop culture.
I am sorry, but I don't see how presenting a woman... fully clothed... at a coffee shop and presenting her... oiled up, in a thong bikini... washing a car... Is the same thing...

If a brother approaches a woman at a coffe shop, his approach is gonna be quite different then if she is shakin' her ass with no clothes on... Even the most respectful of brothers is bound to have a moment of weakness with the latter... the problem, as I see it, is that some brothers look at the booty shake videos and think that all women are like that and they treat them as such... Sisters look at theose videos and think that is how they are supposed to act if they want to attract a man... My fear is that increasingly attraction is becoming only physical, no courting, no commitment, no love...

Men are always gonna love women, no matter how they are presented... We as a people have to take back the airwaves and stop allowing "others" to present us negatively... It is the responsibilty of all of us...
