WHO declares Zika virus a global health emergency

GENEVA/LONDON (Reuters) -- The World Health Organization declared the mosquito-borne Zika virus to be an international public health emergency as the disease linked to thousands of suspected cases of birth defects in Brazil spreads rapidly.

WHO Director-General Margaret Chan told reporters on Monday an international coordinated response was needed to improve detection and speed work on a vaccine and better diagnostics, although curbs on travel or trade were not necessary.

The emergency designation was recommended by a committee of independent experts to the U.N. agency following criticism of a hesitant response so far. The move should help fast-track international action and research priorities.

"Members of the committee agreed that the situation meets the conditions for a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted this advice," Chan said.

The WHO said last week the Zika virus was "spreading explosively" and could infect as many as 4 million people in the Americas. Brazil is due to host the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.

The WHO was lambasted for reacting too slowly to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa which killed more than 10,000 people, and has promised to do better in future global health crises.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention head Thomas Frieden said the declaration "calls the world to action" on Zika.

"The WHO faced heavy criticism for waiting too long to declare the Ebola outbreak a public health emergency and they should be congratulated for being far more proactive this time," said Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust medical charity.

Derek Gatherer, a lecturer at Lancaster University, said the WHO's move was "like a declaration of war, in this case on Zika virus."

The WHO's International Health Regulations emergency committee brings together experts in epidemiology, public health and infectious diseases from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.

UNDERDEVELOPED BRAINS

Brazil has reported nearly 4,000 suspected cases of microcephaly, in which infants are born with smaller-than-usual brains. The Health Ministry has linked the condition to Zika, although the connection is not yet definitive.

Chan said the causal link was "strongly suspected but not yet scientifically proven."

Brazilian Health Minister Marcelo Castro told Reuters that the epidemic was worse than believed because in 80 percent of the cases the infected people had no symptoms.

As the virus spreads from Brazil, other countries in the Americas are also likely to see cases of babies with Zika-linked birth defects, experts believe.

The Pan American Health Organization says that Zika has now spread in 24 nations and territories in the Americas. In addition, the Zika virus infection was also reported late last year in Cape Verde.

The Zika virus has raised questions worldwide about whether pregnant women should avoid infected countries.

Chan said delaying travel was something pregnant women "can consider," adding that if they needed to travel they should take personal protective measures by covering up and using mosquito repellant.

The clinical symptoms of Zika are usually mild and often similar to dengue, a fever which is transmitted by the same Aedes aegypti mosquito, leading to fears that Zika will spread into all parts of the world where dengue is commonplace.

More than a third of the world's population lives in areas at risk of dengue infection, in a band stretching through Africa, India, Southeast Asia and Latin America.

Zika's rapid spread through Latin America is put down to the prevalence of Aedes aegypti and a lack of immunity among the population.

They roll out another "virus" or pandemic about every 5 years now, don't they?

Between the 'medications' and the 'vaccines' that will have to be "discovered" [or created in one of America's Frankenscience Labs] The pharmaceutical companies are going to make billions on this one, too.

So, Brazil [predominately Black country that all of a sudden, just happens to have such a high percentage of this 'virus'] is another Petrie dish for Western germ warfare experimentation; what, are all the Africans too sick?

I haven't had a mosquito bite in years. How are so many people being bitten by mosquitoes? Spray that crap made by Avon on you. That's supposed to do the trick. Now Black people are going to have these itty-bitty heads and they'll say we're not capable of having an intelligence quota beyond 2 and nobody will learn anything ever again. They'll be calling us the Nigger Pin Heads. Quaint!!!!!!

Betcha when they get their killings on, they'll still try to send the little head suckers to the front lines to be their bullet pin cushions.

Yep!  And also roll out another flu virus every year.  These are the kept diseases to control population of nonwhites.  The zika virus isn't a new virus.  It's been around awhile.  And it's mighty funny only poor countries are being affected....including Brazil.  This is why it's so important to keep up with what massa is doing cuz he is the carrier of pandemic diseases.  They are trying to blame this on Africa.  Everything bad comes from Africa.  I bet one of the white mad scientists [Germany orSwiterzland] went to Brazil with his hive of mosquitoes[he's kept in his laboratory]  and open the window of the plane and let 'em all out over the Americas.  What you bet?  This reminds me of the bird flu epidemic in Asia.  But!

Genetic Modified Mosquitoes With Possible Link To Zika Virus Awaiting Release In Florida

Someone got the virus through sexual activity. All you fellas are gonna be yanking on your poles just to continue to survive. Forget those vaginas and anuses. No more sex for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those mosquitoes are kickin' some major ass. Sex is going to make people  and maybe someone will be able to read a book for a change.

Send those ZIKA mosquitoes to ISIS; end this war crap. Everyone's looking insane shooting guns and missiles at each other. For what, really??? For whatever reason it's being done, when you're dead, was it worth it?? Call the folks in Iraq, they have some stories; talk to some of the gang bangers in America, they have stories too. Dead is dead. No more birds, squirrels, sunshine, rain, breathing, baths, kisses.

Hell yeah.

It would seem to me, that the percentage of the virus being talked about [put on a loop] now, would have always been that percentage in any part of the world where the virus supposedly originates.

Now, you hear them all of a sudden bombard the media with a new disease every time you look up, and what makes it all suspect is the predictions they make about these diseases, viruses, etc., long before the actual cases start to materialize, and then, wa 'la all their predictions about whatever disease magically come true; it's almost as if they are psychic or something, when it comes to deadly diseases, viruses, germs, etc., but only where poor nations and so-called third world countries are concerned.

But we know that the United States government, European governments, and the W.H.O. are not psychic.

So, . . .

When I first read your comment about it being sexually transmitted I said, wow she might be mistaken. Makes one wonder how the hell this came out of nowhere.

So, . . .

Girlllllll.  This is warfare strategy.  All it is.  In every contact of massa and his boys, he brings disease.  He is the originator of disease.  That's why he is able to wipe out almost every indigenous culture in the world.  He is the cancer of human beings.  And he knows it.  And know he will not live as long as us.  So while he's on earth, he's gon kill enough of us so he can enjoy his little stay on here on this planet.  That's just fact.    You know, when I was a little girl I used to be fascinated by shows like the "Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and One Step Beyond."  Those gripping abstract stories use to really tell the chilly insight of massa's mind.  And they covered almost every category of massa's fears and his reaction it to familiar details of massa's mindset-how he really thinks when no one is looking:  He is a social path.

What I know?  It is massa who is the invader of the world.  As why he has little time on it.  And he's pissed about that and has no problem taking us down with him.  But again the truth is....you can put a finger on every pandemic disease in world history and you will SEE massa's face as the authentic carrier.  And this is why the world had to formulate some kind of rule of war [Geneva Convention] cuz massa has used his diseases as arsenal against all his perceived adversaries including the beloved folks in the Americas.  So he realized from the battles he's won, he can also use his  "disease" method for population control of those who are powerless.  And because of this,  I do think he has the antidote to every disease out there.   But is keeping  them on ice [and had been for years] from public use for the obvious reasons mentioned.   But!

Zika Is a Wake-Up Call for All of Us

On Monday, the World Health Organization declared the spread of the Zika virus a public health emergency of international concern.

Unlike other viruses spread through the bite of the Aedes mosquito -- such as dengue, yellow fever, or chikungunya -- the Zika virus often went unnoticed and was considered a mild tropical disease with most virus carriers being symptomless. Yet Brazil recently found itself in the throes of an unprecedented Zika outbreak -- with more than a million people infected within the past year -- and an unusually high number of babies born with microcephaly. There is growing international consensus, although not yet definitive proof, that the virus has potentially catastrophic implications for infected pregnant women and their unborn children, as well as possible links to other serious neurological conditions. Experts believe that environmental destruction caused the Zika virus to infect humans and is fueling its dramatic spread through the Americas.

There is no vaccine or cure for Zika, and a health sector response will simply not be sufficient to stop its spread. This means that fear of infection is mounting among people living in the most vulnerable communities across Latin America, where cased have been reported in 25 countries and territories.

Some countries have responded to the threat of Zika by issuing their own recommendations including advising women not to get pregnant, introducing travel warnings and encouraging individuals to cover up and use more mosquito repellent. Unfortunately, these recommendations are mostly focused on individual action: what a woman should do to protect herself and her unborn baby. They assume that all women have full control over their reproductive health and choices, and that they have the resources and knowledge to act.

The WHO Emergency Committee highlighted the importance of aggressive measures to reduce infection rates. To stop the spread of Zika, governments will need to do much more. At a minimum, vastly expanded mosquito control measures are urgently needed. These include residual spraying of houses, a focus on eliminating breeding sites, minimizing urban stagnant water, community engagement to raise awareness, and mapping of the Aedes mosquito to better target efforts.

As is true of any disease outbreak, as we saw with Ebola and learned from years working on HIV, health and development are intimately related. The poor, those who live in informal settlements, marginalized populations, and groups that lack power and resources are often the hardest hit.

With this in mind, UNDP has always advocated for multi-sectoral responses to health, recognizing that vulnerability to poor health is often shaped by inequality, bad policies in agriculture, environment, trade, housing or education, and a lack of a coordinated responses during outbreaks.

In declaring Zika a global public health emergency, the WHO has acknowledged that robust and concerted cross-sectoral global action is needed to stop this virus. UNDP has much to contribute, with our broad experience in supporting the implementation of large-scale health, environment, and development programmes. Through our partnership with the Global Fund, UNDP manages malaria programmes in nine countries. One of the ways UNDP can provide support to the Zika efforts is sharing expertise on multi-dimensional mosquito control responses. In addition, UNDP has strong partnerships with key health agencies, regional organizations, and civil society to help accelerate efforts.

Zika is a wake-up call for the way we address health and development in the Sustainable Development Goal era: If we do not take climate change and the impact that environmental degradation has on disease vectors seriously and if we do not address gender inequality and improve the daily conditions for people living in poverty, public health at-large will be increasingly at risk.

Who's going to fight white folks' wars when everyone's head's the size of a pin? Watchagonnadothen? Who of any color, will be able to fight anything??? Maybe folks'll have no choice but to get along with people of all colors. Won't have the strength to pull the triggers; throw the bombs, fly the planes. Maybe there just won't be anymore PEOPLE!!!!! Peace at Last, Thank God Almighty, Peace at Last!!!!

God, do white folks ever lay down and go to sleep?  These fuckers are like roaches, crawling around scarin' the fuck out of everybody, day after day, minute after minute, second after second. These politicians are going to be going to the hospital any day now, suffering from Mouth Flying Out of Control Disease. I wish they'd STFU, yesterday. They need to go home and slather some wrinkle cream on their faces and on their lips. Maybe Trump's mouth will make an appearance for a change. It keeps making noise, but it can't be seen. There's a little bitty circle there somewhere.

When one of these suckers makes "president", we're all going to be running for cover. I'm gonna start practicing runnin' now; my breath ain't what it used to be.

America, ZIKA, white folks, all kinds of folks are givin' me a headache.

The NAACP Awards last night were FABULOUS. Nobody fills out dresses and suits like black people. Beauty everywhere. Even Laverne Cox puts Caitlyn to fuckin' SHAME. What a show, what a show.

Sylvester Stallone you fit right in; you shouldn't have been surprised. You're ITALIAN, after all. You looked good on the stage and were accepted.

Black folks, weaves and all, when you have it going on, you really have it going on. I'm honored to be a part of all of you. Thanks to Mom and Pops!!!!!!!

I just heard the Pope saying that it was alright to use birth control until the Zikra virus is eradicated.  Had me thinking. What if.  ummm like all these seasonal viruses and fatal illnesses are part of massa's attempt for population control?  Every 10 years are so, we are overwhelmed with a deadly disease or illness.  Colds.  Flues.  Pneumonia.  A lot of people die.  The pharmarcy companies pretend to look for cures or treatment sthrough research.  But it takes money to do that.   So they kill us with this designer viruses they keep in the lab and then make money off treating the rest of us who are left.  In the meantime, there are still a significant amount folks succumbing to these unknown or don't know where they come pathogens.    Somethin' mighty suspicious.  People are living longer.  There are wars going on in every critical places in the world.  So.  Who knows?  Maybe this one way massa keep the world available for the elite "few."  Just a thought.  But!

We come here on earth with a penis or a vagina. It's amazing to me someone other than the owners can control your genitalia. Everyone has something to say about YOUR being YOU. Someone's always CONTROLLING YOU. Some folks like to pull and stroke their penises and vaginas. What's the Pope have to say about that? Has he checked out his Priests? Who's controlling these ugly white people and their vile hatred against everyone that doesn't have the Look of Death like themselves?????????

Who's feeding those Syrian babies whose homes have been blown to smithereens and they're strolling on foot forever to find another place to sleep with their bedraggled parents. Who's feeding the African babies starving and who have no water to drink? What's up with the poisoned babies of Flint? Who's trying to stop all the insane shit that's going on between people that have totally lost their damn minds and are sending others to their graves with abandonment?  There's more stuff to worry about than penises and vaginas. When the owners are dead it becomes a moot point.
