There's some debate as to what exactly happened:

The spokesman said Rebecca Mews became upset Tuesday during a birthday celebration for an attorney, who Mews says was her date. While Conyers was speaking with the man, Mews "came over and literally started spewing obscene names," and shoved Conyers, said Conyers' chief of staff, Sam Riddle.

"This woman was obviously drunk, and the councilwoman vigorously defended herself," he said.

Mews...denied she was intoxicated. Mews said that when Conyers began speaking to her date with her back to her, she tapped her on the shoulder and said, "Pardon me."

"She turned around and began yelling at me," Mews said. "When I began yelling back at her, she punches me in my left eye several times," Mews said. "I never struck her. Never once did I hit her."

Well at least we know that Mrs. Conyers can tussle with the best of them! She looks like she got knocked the hellout! LOL She should be ashamed that she let that old woman give her a black eye like that!

I think we all have the capabilty to get angry.....but then there is a time and place.........we should be able to control this behavior.

I really dont care if its online, but if in public eye, thats another story.

I find this disturbing, because....of the way it makes black women look. 'Loud, hard to get along with, etc.'

Im really finding it difficult, to work with black women.....especially those older than myself. They are constantly attacking those they feel threaten by (younger black women), not realizing that we are all under scrutiny.

Im being trained to keep my mouth closed.....and walk away, but i really wished things were different.

It's not just black women in positions of power acting like this..these young girls are acting like they're in the wild west or something.

If you really look closely alot of leaders (not just black women) seem to be "losing it" lately. They say that power demands from the user and perhaps we're seeing that in action.

About those arrested
Four women and a 15-year-old girl have been linked to a string of violent crimes that includes the shooting death of a man during an attempted robbery last week, authorities said Tuesday.

All five confessed to their involvement in the spree, Lt. Chris Cowan, spokesman for the Richland County Sheriff's Department, said Tuesday.

The women dressed like men during the attacks, and their victims were men, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said.

"This is definitely different," he said.

Four of the five, including the juvenile, were charged with murder in the shooting death of 22-year-old Keith Etheridge on Friday. The other adult was charged in connection with the robberies.

Family and friends of Etheridge, who was fatally shot during a robbery gone bad, welcomed the announcement of the arrests by the Sheriff's Department.

Etheridge's aunt, Mazie Lawson, said, "I'm just relieved myself. At least that set of people won't do harm to anybody else."

The incidents began last month, according to Richland County reports.

"¢ On July 31, two women entered Abigail Vilchls' home on Percival Road at about 3:30 p.m. He was shot in the hand and his car was taken.

"¢ On Friday, Columbia police received a call at about 12:30 a.m. that five people were trying to rob people in the parking lot of Video Express on Two Notch Road. They didn't find the person who called 911 or the robbers. However, after searching the area, police found the body of Etheridge, 22, in an idling car on Carnegie Street. He had been shot twice in the chest.

"¢ Later Friday, Juan Sandos was robbed at gunpoint in his house on Fox Trail Lane by four people around 6 p.m. He was assaulted, and his money and vehicle were taken.

The spree ended Saturday, when Swansea police officers tried to stop Sandos' stolen car for speeding.

After the car didn't stop and officers realized it was stolen, police started a pursuit, a Swansea police report said.

At one point, a black bag, which police later recovered, was thrown out of the car's window. A handgun inside was linked to the robberies and the murder, Lott said.

The car finally stopped, and the driver escaped.

Inside the car, police found marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to the report.

Facing murder charges are:

"¢ Janeshia Furtick, 17, of N. Campanella Extension, Columbia

"¢ Tamika Holiday, 19, of Airbase Road, Columbia

"¢ Trakita Cooper, 17, of Hallbrook Drive, Columbia

"¢ The 15-year-old girl who was not identified because of her age

All four also face robbery charges. In addition, Holiday is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill.

One woman, Starr Richardson, 25, of Bailey Street, Columbia, is charged only in the robberies.

Cowan said investigators think Richardson could be the driver of the vehicle involved in the chase.

On Tuesday afternoon, friends and family of Etheridge attended a visitation at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home on Colonial Drive.

His younger sister, Kawanda, remembered Etheridge as a loving, family-oriented man who was always smiling. She said Etheridge's girlfriend was three months pregnant with their first child.

Etheridge was employed as a driver for Inter-Rail Transport.

Kawanda Etheridge said her brother used to take her 3-year-old son, Damaryon, on trips to Charleston. "It's hard to explain to him why Uncle Keith won't be able to play with him no more."

She had a message for the suspects: "I'm happy you got caught and I hope you never get out. You took an innocent life. You took a father, a brother."

E.B. Strong, executive director of Gang Out in Columbia, said he has seen increased violence among groups of young women in the Midlands.

"I think young ladies are trying to prove they are just as bad as males and are attacking males," he said.

Fifth Circuit Assistant Solicitor Kendall Corley said a hearing to determine whether the 15-year-old will be charged as an adult is scheduled for 2 p.m. today.

Bond hearings for the others are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

This is how I view it..and I hope nobody here takes offense..it's just my personal view...

Lets say you have ten people (in this case sistas) and you know 9 are going to be pain in the asses. Network with that one only. Let the other 9 go to hell wearing gasoline panties. Repeat this process everywhere, everytime. If the other 9 want to hate on you, let them hate. You don't have time to care. Build only with those who want to build.

As I've said on here before, a garden grows by cultivating the flowers and killing the weeds.

What does stress have to do with acting like a total jackass??????? I don't see this as an issue of stress rather a long list of other problems that has very little to do with stress.

1. Lack of home training/parental guidance
2. Abuse of power; face it the system is too soft on those with power and money.

The only way I cpould see stress effecting politicians was if they did something out of the ordinary....like their job!!!! Sorry but socializing and sucking up is not stressful.

I think everyone of 'us' is cracking under this shitstem, even the 'us' that are a 'part of it'.

IMO it is is misdirected anger showing it's head reguardless of economic class affiliations.

sadly, it's sometimes younger black women who exhibit the same behavior toward women they are threatened by.

who are you in training with? do you think there is a way to resolve conflict with dialogue, or at least make your feelings known, without it resulting in physical violence/conflict?

hmmmm - i tend to think that some/many times when folk act like a jackass that stress has something to do with it. have you ever "flown off the handle" and lashed out in a way you normally don't do and all because something else was weighing heavily on your mind?

you may be right that stress had nothing to do with the situations cited here - but then again, it may have played some part.

a false sense of security (in their political position) may also have played a part - or not. i don't know, but was just putting the question on the table.

like someone else said, i think we're all under a certain amount of stress - just living in this society -that affects us black people in ways even we don't realize.

Just out of curiosity. Why don't you just write "Sister". There seems to be no reason for the other. What are you trying to say? Send a message? What message?

Im an intern for a law firm...i dont work 'with' the women, i shadow the attorneys.......

These conflicts are never 'work' related, theyre 'personal' attacks, to make me and other young interns uncomfortable. (I thought i left this type of behavior in high school)

I understand that stress causes a lot of this type of behavior.......but i think self control should be key.

is this addressed to me relating to the use of "sista" in the thread title? if so, it's not that big of a deal to me and certainly not enough to debate about. it's the word i was inspired to use at the time and so i used it. *shrug* there's really nothing that should be read into the use of the word - just like there's nothing to read into me using the word brotha, as opposed to brother, from time to time.

please don't stumble over that because it's really not anything to be stumbling over.

hmmmm - i see. have you confronted/addressed any of the offending parties about their behavior? is their behavior acceptable to management there?
