I saw this on a news show this AM and thought it was an unfortunate objectification of girls. It was unnecessary to move the product.

What was so weird was that the BK spokesperson said that the inclusion of the girls was to draw in the "parents of the kids who'd be attracted by SpongeBob". What (psychologically normal) parent with a kid young enough to like SB Squarepants is also going to be pulled by teenagers shaking their asses?

I bet Nickelodeon will eventually ask it to be pulled.
The more I see it, the less I like it! td6

I've never seen a SpongeBob show, yet. Just can't seem to catch it on when I'm watching TV. However, my 2 y/o niece, for some strange reason, has latched on to him as her favorite cartoon. It's driving her mom crazy because she says SpongeBob has no redeeming educational value WHATSOEVER!! Eek She says he is the biggest nothing there is!

While all the other children have done the Sesame Street/Elmo/Barney thing .. this one picks SpongeBob.

So, when I first saw the commercial, I laughed. But now ... first, I hope to God that it's not targeted for children (I see it at night during my soap operas); second, it's degrading and insulting; and third, I don't even know what the right word is for using *booty* to sell a kid's meal!! I mean, really .... WTH is that?? Confused

Sometimes I think my Grandma was right ... we are going to hell in a hand basket! Eek Roll Eyes

A better question:

What (psychologically normal) parent with a kid young enough to like SB Squarepants is also going to be pulled by teenagers shaking their square asses? Eek

Your grandmother is a prophetess. We're going to hell in a hand basket, wearing gasoline boxers. ek

I remember writing a parody of "Baby Got Back" over a decade ago, and it was much better than that. Remember back in the 80s, there were schoolchildren singing the jingle "You Got The I Look" for Jordache jeans?
Kids Got the Look (1980)

That's kinda creepy, sexualizing kids to sell jeans, and that was almost 30 years ago.

But this SB Squarepants stuff, selling sex for a kids' meal...damn, damn, DAMN!!

That was my take on the situation. But BK has a tradition of somewhat perverse advertising. Some of it is interesting, but in this instance, I find it disturbing as it appears to be target to kids, at least with respect to the kid's meal. However, I do know that there are a number of adults (+18 year olds) who are fans of Sponge Bob. I am not sure what the attraction is, but it does exist if my students and even some of my peers are representative.

Eek Eek Get outta here!! Eek Eek

Is there some kind of way I can watch a whole cartoon online or on YouTube or something?? Or does anybody know what channel and what time it comes on so that I can record it?? Confused I never see it advertised. And I am very ... very curious about it right about now!!

~... Confused....wow. Not a single negative comment about Sir Mix a Lot's involvement/permission in what the poster's find to be negative. Could the commercial have even been done without his (coypyright) "okay...go ahead"? And, if it would have gone ahead with or without his permission...did he have to validate the heinous act with his physical presence (cameo)?

"Booty is booty" (money is money) like he says, I guess.

And, sadly, culpability goes right over our heads. He's a friggin' sell-out, and no one mentions calling him out on it personally and directly. That collective "non-reaction" should have more of a negative influence than the commercial itself. Sad state. Frown~ Sad black representation.

I was embarrased THOROUGHLY when I saw the commercial, and cringed at his "Booty is booty" line to put the stink on top of the shit. I can just hear the nation's children chiming that line with their little happy meal containers swinging as they dance to it. Roll Eyes~
I was really pissed off when I saw this commercial...it is bad enough that my child has sucked onto SpongeBob Square Pants, but then to see this commercial???

I told him if I heard him singing that stupid song, he already knows what I'm going to do.

He knows that's wrong...

There was more shock for me in seeing the commercial and disgust isn't even the word for what I felt for it.

Thanks, Huey!! Smile But, actually, I was looking for a link to an episode of the cartoon itself!! I don't even know what channel it comes on ... but, I will look through the guide tonight and see if I can't find it to tape it on my DVR. I'm thinking it probably comes on in the morning ... like Sesame Street and Barney. 19

I'd just really like to see what all the fuss is about! Big Grin
Spongebob comes on Nickelodeon throughout the day multiple times. It is not a children's cartoon (in the same way Ren & Stimpy wasn't and The Simpsons isn't) if you really pay attention to a lot of the character interaction and humor.

I think it's meant to be something that appeals to kids and adults at the same time to avoid the disdain adults have for other kids' programming like Barney, Dora, etc.

I can understand that ... however, I don't think it's wise - or even possible - to cross that line, ya know?? 19

What should appeal to kids simply cannot have adult-content and appeal ... because, of course, that kind of thing goes over the head of small, undeveloped minds (and rightly so!). They don't call them kids for nuthin'! Big Grin At that age and of that mind, education (perhaps mixed with a little fun) is what should be the agenda for the purposed of their entertainment.

ADULTS, on the other hand, ... well, actually, I don't think I'll go there 'cause what I have to say probably isn't very nice at the moment! Eek Razz (I came in in the middle of an episode of Brothers and Sisters last that still has me want to puke with disgust! But that's another (and very adult) thread! Big Grin)

But .... you get my drift! Smile
