How Oklahoma almost became a black state

In the late 1800s, the red-dirt territory that was to become Oklahoma was the land of exile and hope.

American Indians, removed from their lands in the eastern United States, had taken up residence in the state, establishing towns and sophisticated societies in the eastern part of what was then known as Oklahoma Territory.

While black people, some held as slaves, accompanied members of the Five Civilized Tribes in their migration to Oklahoma, the largest black influx to Oklahoma didn't happen until after the Civil War.

Oklahoma, with its wide-open spaces, didn't have the racial-bias trappings of the old South, and black freedmen were able to own land and carve out a living in the unsettled parts of Oklahoma.

"It was seen as an economic opportunity to acquire land, and it was seen as a way to get away from the kind of legislation that was being passed in the Deep South,” said Hannibal Johnson, a Tulsa attorney who has written several books about Oklahoma's black history.

"Everybody had a shot then,” he said.

At one time, lawmakers considered making Oklahoma an all-black state.

Federal legislation pushed by the former state auditor of Kansas, E.P. McCabe, asked Congress to designate Oklahoma as a black state. McCabe's push for what was then called "Negro Colonization,” got as far as a congressional committee, and McCabe discussed it with President Benjamin Harrison.

McCabe participated in the Land Run, staked his claim and went on to establish the area near Langston University.

About the same time, Oklahoma societies and land clubs were being formed in places such as St. Louis and parts of Kansas. Promise of all-black towns in Oklahoma brought in people from southern states, in some cases causing labor shortage in states such as South Carolina and Georgia.

How Oklahoma almost became a black state

According to one newspaper account, black men who were members of the Freedmen's Oklahoma Association were promised 160 acres at no charge.

Black nationalists, similar to the ilk that participated in Liberia colonization efforts, also sought opportunities in Oklahoma, Johnson said.

In a New York Times article from 1890, Oklahoma was called the "New Mecca,” and the next "Beulah Land.”

Black towns thrived in Oklahoma from 1865 to 1920, and more than 50 remained. Boley, in Okfuskee County, was one of the larger black towns. It was home to the first black-chartered bank and other businesses, Johnson said.

As white settlers moved into Oklahoma, however, tensions mounted between whites and blacks.

Dreams dashed by racism
When McCabe, who was black, attempted to run for governor, his life was threatened, according to a New York Times article from Feb. 28, 1890.

The article goes on to talk about the increased racial tension between black business owners and members of the Oklahoma Immigration Association, a white group fighting against the movement for a black state, according to the news article.

The heyday of black colonization in Oklahoma ended just after statehood in 1907.

"Unfortunately, at statehood, the first piece of legislation was to segregate rail cars and waiting facilities,” he said.

"That was sort of, in a way, a nail in the coffin of the dreams of Oklahoma as a promised land for African-Americans,” Johnson said.

And that "white woman" is the carrot that massa uses to entice black men to run after cuz black men think this is what massa, the powerful, lust after.  But! In reality. massa is not interested in the carrot....but! Is interested in the RABBIT that eats the carrot. The carrot is just a prop to enslave the mentality of black men.  And  black men are sooooo stupid that they thinks its really a carrot until they attempt to take a bite...then BAM...on the tree slinging or in the prison for LIFE they go.  And black men will NEVER learned...cuz even then?  They really think they have been chasing something valuable.  And that something is merely a PIPE dream.  Even today...it is something they are STILL daydreaming about that NEVER ever existed....only in their warped controlled minds.  Pitiful.  But!

I get so tired of hearing "some [Native Americans] held [Black people] as slaves" beingconstantly mentioned when talking about Native Americans and Black people as if it was ever in great number or that most of the ones that are said to have been "held as slaves" by Native Americans, were not in fact living under that rouse to fool slavers and slave hunters.

I know that it did happen and some were held as slaves outright, especially by Tribes that sought to appease gain and acceptance from their White oppressor by trying to mimic him and his sick deeds.

Many of these Black people were merely being protected by Native American Tribes and many were the wives or husbands of Native Americans.

But, most importantly, trying to imply that it was the only way/reason that Black people were in the West during and soon after Slavery, acts to diminish the fact that many Black people escaped slavery and/or racism by going West, at least until it became heavily populated with Whites, and it blots out the fact that many of these Black people were some of the first "pioneers" of that part of the country, who went out West for the same reasons that Whites did, for gold or for free or cheap land.

When you read the words "slaves", "slave hunters", "slavery", "white oppressors", seems all the gangs of humanity that enforced/still enforce these vile deeds, should have been/should be locked up in the nearest mental institutions, never again being allowed to roam the earth.  Truth be told, these people were/are severely mentally ill.  It's really all about CONTROL and FORCE of fellow human beings with all kinds of weaponry applied to their bodies, if they refuse to comply.

Yeah, everyone tries to gloss over the fact that there are, and always have been, in this country, those who do whatever they can to impede Black people's right to "Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness" and that it has been. and still is. consistent, and systemic.

+ if you are Black and too successful, White people will simply take that business/industry from you....i.e. hair care industry, religion, and all forms of American music (white blues singers...really??  what could they sing about??  are they oppressed??)

“Proximity conceals absurdity”.

News Flash: Yeah, there’s major problems but the omnipotence of the white race as a given is on the road to being a thing of the past. We don't need to think we must lose before we start and that they can always impede and control. Example: was mighty whitey able to stop Mexicans and other Hispanics from coming to California + and eroding their majority status? Hell, no.
