NYC Dept of Education will begin forcing teachers to use lesson plans that include HIV / AIDS education in the classroom. Kids K-12 must particpate unless parents decline. Parents who decline MUST offer the HIV / AIDS education at home. Kids from K through 3 grade will learn about the virus that causes AIDS is a "germ." Beginning in 4th grade, kids will learn that AIDS is caused by a virus that is transmitted sexually.

Black Child's Pledge I pledge allegiance to my Black People. I pledge to develop my mind and body to the greatest extent possible. I will learn all that I can in order to give my best to my People in their struggle for liberation. I will keep myself physically fit, building a strong body free from drugs and other substances which weaken me and make me less capable of protecting myself, my family and my Black brothers and sisters. I will unselfishly share my knowledge and understanding with them in order to bring about change more quickly. I will discipline myself to direct my energies thoughtfully and constructively rather than wasting them in idle hatred. I will train myself never to hurt or allow others to harm my Black brothers and sisters for I recognize that we need every Black Man, Woman, and Child to be physically, mentally and psychologically strong. These principles I pledge to practice daily and to teach them to others in order to unite my People. The Black Panther, October 26, 1968 by Shirley Williams

It makes alot of sense as Kweli allured to in that some parents don't bother to teach their kids this stuff. The wife being a registered nurse not only talked to all our kids about AIDS and other STD's but had some books with very graphic color pictures of what happens to certain body parts during the disease process.

I used to kid her that we will never be grandparents because our kids were now afraid of having sex Smile
After reading the curriculum that will be used to teach NY children about HIV/AIDS, the biggest problem that I see coming from it is the vagueness of the curriculum and how it tries to avoid questions of sex in the Grade K curriculum. It labels HIV/AIDS as a germ and then goes on to explain what a germ is, stating that some germs are easy to get via coughing, sneezing and touching and then there are some germs that are hard to get that can not be transmitted via the aforementioned ways. This is where the vagueness begins, and I believe they underestimate the mind of a six year old. The first thing my six year old would ask is; if it can not be passed along via the easy ways, touching, sneezing and coughing than how is it transmitted? The avoidance of the sexual aspect of how this disease is transmitted will become a problem, especially if one smart six year old tells the other six year olds it is passed via having sex. To their credit they do say HIV is passed from one person to another via an infected person's blood getting into another persons body? They hint that this happen via open wounds, cuts and so on and teach the children to bandage cuts right away

Overall, I do not think I would pull my child out of these classes, but I would debrief my child using the same curriculum they are using.
I see nothing wrong with HIV/AIDS ed in kindergarten.

I went through that stuff early.

HIV/AIDS was everywhere when I was in elementary school. The "new cancer," the "gay disease," the am I gonna get AIDS because I drank at the same water fountain disease.

We kids had a lot of questions and I'm glad I went to schools where educators took it upon themselves to dispel myths and give us facts.

I think today's youth are at much greater disadvantage. They don't see to question the disease as much.

I know kids that got their first sex ed classes AFTER a couple of their classmates were already pregnant.

Iono. I think kids should be armed with information as soon as they can comprehend, rather than wait until it's too late.

AFRICA IS NOT DYING OF AIDS... is the title of a new article appearing in the prestigious London Spectator newspaper. Read in detail of the failure of the horrendous AIDS Pandemic to have any negative impact on African populations from newly-introduced killer STD's.

"From 1989 to 1991, Kaiser Permanent along with the L.A. County Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), injected over 700 "mostly minority" babies with unlicensed experimental vaccines with fraudulently-obtained consent from the parents. One of the vaccines used, Edmonston-Zagreb high-titer, had already obtained a notorious reputation overseas for killing almost one out of every 13 babies in closely controlled studies in the Third World. In particular, use of the vaccine had been closely associated with an increased death rate among infants in Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Haiti before their second birthday. At least one baby in the L.A. County experiment died within this same two year window. When the final story is told, this will likely be one of the most scandalous affairs in the history of human experimentation to rival or exceed that of the German Nazis, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study or the DOE radiation exposure experiments."---Keidi Obi Awadu (Outrage, The Conscious Rasta Report, Aug 1996) http://www.7mac.com/
