Sista Souljah....a dynamic speaker.  Her true story is amazing.  I followed her success when she was younger and felt taken aback during the time she tried to formulate a partnership with rappers....  Her goal:  To further her message.  But to her surprise, many of the rappers she thought were there.....weren't.  They were immature, profane and mynogist.  I was just as disappointed as her.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X is a book I give to male students at detention centers and juvenile correctional facilities I visit.  His story is their story.  For years now I have witnessed an intellectual evolution with these children....now men.  It is required reading for young black men who feel they have no voice.  I also give this book to other non-black youngsters....who too began to grow inside as thinking human beings and able to face what was ailing them without fear. Needless to say, I am absolutely proud of the tool Malcolm has left behind.  For this tool has helped sooooooo many twisted confused children and allowed them to developed into manhood i.e. adulthood stronger than ever.  Bravo Malcolm... for your spirit lives on in the children you continue to touch through your book.  Happy Birthday my brotha!!!

Man, when I posted this video on facebook, I caught some hell with one of my white friends, or actually the one white guy who posted.

    • Tom Pender Long as he saw the error of his ways. Racists by any color (cough - Spike Lee - cough) aren't worth the oxygen it takes to sustain them.

    • Derrick Barrett You don't have to worry about Spike; Tyler Perry is cleaning Spike's clock in the box office...although I don't think cross-dressing and buffoonery will save the masses any more than wearing X-caps.

    • Tom Pender History has a way of avenging the ruthless. Look at modern "PC" speak: It's perfectly okay to put out a film called "White Men Can't Jump" but I dare say you'll never see one called "Black Men Can't Say The Word 'Ask'!"

    • Derrick Barrett You never will see that. Why? Paul Mooney said it best, "'White Men Can't Jump'...they don't have to [jump]. They OWN the team."

    • Derrick Barrett But it's okay for someone to make a film called "Black Men Don't Make Good Fathers," just as long as it's retitled "For Colored Girls" and voila.

Seriously... why do people think Malcolm X, who had evolving viewpoints on race at a time when racial viewpoints were evolving on the whole, is just some anti-white parrot? No,he wasn't, that never happened. The man lived at a time when black people were treated as a doormat. What do you expect? What do you think black people at the time were thinking? And it's really not that long ago. Black men in my generation still hear first hand accounts from their parents. You cannot judge black men from that generation from being quite cynical about race. That's just the story of their lives, not a political point to be scored.
