While many whites say they still plan to attend next week's integrated prom, the decision to hold the whites-only prom this Friday saddened senior Gerica McCrary, who helped organize last year's dance.
"I cried," said McCrary, who is black. "The black juniors said, 'Our prom is open to everyone. If you want to come, come."'
Juniors are in charge of planning the prom each year and last year they decided to have just one dance "” the first integrated prom in 31 years in the rural Georgia county 150 miles south of Atlanta.
Until then, parents and students organized separate proms for whites and blacks after school officials stopped sponsoring dances, in part because they wanted to avoid problems arising from interracial dating.
This year, a small number of white juniors decided they wanted a separate prom.
"They influenced the others," said McCrary, who plans to major in biology at Columbus State University. "They didn't vote on anything. They said, 'This is what we're going to do."'
The school has 439 students, 232 of them black. McCrary and a white friend passed out fliers informing students of all races that they would be welcome at the May 9 prom at nearby Fort Valley State University.
The private prom is Friday night 50 miles away in Columbus.
Erin Posey, a white senior, said the entire junior class joined together in hosting last year's prom, but this year's junior class wasn't as unified.
"I think a lot of seniors were disappointed," she said. "Now we have to choose between two groups of friends."
Posey plans to attend both proms.
"I had some white friends who were not going to the other (inclusive) prom," she said. "I wanted to have time with everybody. I'll have a lot of (black) friends there, too. A lot more of the seniors are going to be at the mixed one."
After school integration, separate proms were common in the rural South, but Taylor County was among the last to cling to the practice.
Glenda Latimore, a 1972 graduate, was in the first class to have separate black and white proms. Now her 16-year-old son, Gerard, is preparing for prom night.
As the black junior class president, her son helped organize the open-to-all prom. The class also has a white president.
"I would have liked to see it together this year," said Latimore, an outfielder on the school's baseball team. "My class would have, too. It just didn't happen this year."
Glenda Latimore said relatives in Philadelphia and New Jersey laugh when they read about Taylor County's prom. She said residents here are "nice and friendly," but they still have a problem with proms.
"It seems like it's something secret," she said. "The white people are afraid to speak up against the separation.

I attended a high school in NY while most of my cousins attended school in Natchez, MS. Their high schools were segregated up until 1989! The graduating class of 1990 was the first class to attend school at a "unified" school. This is ashame! The only reason that this was done was because the city didn't have enough money to continue to maintain two seperate high schools. This in my day is was a living reminder of segregation. And it's ashame!
Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. Down here in Louisiana a high school's prom was intergrated for the first time ever this year (2003!!!) . It was all on the news down here, a spokesperson for the school said simply that it wasn't an important enough issue for the school so they never intergrated it-they said intergrating the classroom was more important than a "party" so they just never got around to it. No parents or students before this year stepped up to the issue, so it went ignored. It was the students this year that may the change, they called for the integration of the prom. And what I found interesting about the school was they have a BLACK principal!

Yeah, I never understood the concept of being expected to be able to run a fair and even race against an opponent you know has been disadvantaged since the conception of the contest!

I can not figure out why most of you even care that some white folk in Georgia want to have an all white prom. I personally don't care if they want to have an all white prom. Good for them, let them enjoy their whites only Prom. I am sure this all white Prom will not be all white music, but that is really beside the point. This all white prom does not pose a threat in anyway to the struggle of Black people in America. I say let them have their prom, In fact let them have a whole damn school of their own that we may focusing on educating our children and teaching them to love themselves.

I'll tell you why White Georgia students having a segregated prom is important to me. It's because it measures progress (or the lack thereof) of us, as a country, coming to a point where the Constitution becomes a viable and true document.
The one thing Blacks and Whites always seem to want to throw back to is the Constitution. Both hold it up as something to either strive for or as the bedrock of this society. It is thought that when the Constitution actually becomes the doctrine that we live by, then the dream that actually started this country can begin to turn into something other than the 227-year nightmare that it has been!
In this day and age, it does concern me what America's youth are doing, thinking, feeling and living. Of course, what Black youth are doing in these areas is of primary interest to me, but it's the youth of today who are the leaders of tomorrow. White children in Georgia believing that it's okay to hold a segregated prom in the year 2003 tells me that not even the generation of Black children under me will know the feeling of equal treatment, fair opportunity, sharing all the rights of true citizenship, MLK's Dream.
I am an optimist by nature. I see how far we have come, yet see how far we have to go. I hope and pray everyday that we will get there. The songs sung by the civil rights activists say that it's gonna happen. I'd like to see it sooner, rather than later. Stories like this represent a setback to forward progress. And I don't like setbacks. Because it is a story involving youth participants, it does, at least potentially have the ability to affect the future.
And that's why I care.

Well one of the mistakes you are making is thinking that those documents and their authors had Black people in mind when they were constructed. Those documents came from the mind of men who owned slaves and believe Black men and women to be inferior. Those documents are not worth the paper they are written on and are open to the interpretation of what ever mind state is sweeping this nation. This of course is demonstrated how one thing can be unconstitutional for a few years only to have it made constitutional when a new Regime comes to power in the U.S.

With all due respect, I have to totally disagree with everything you just said!
First of all, nobody in their right mind would believe the Constitution was written with Black folks in mind ... we weren't even considered human at the time it was produced. However, it was constructed and worded to be the prevailing law of the land for the country known as the United States of America. By their own definitions, the Founding Fathers wrote the governing mandate concerning "citizens" of this land. Their definition of "citizen" at the time was shortsided, minute, distorted, unsound and otherwise incorrect. But the Constitution has not changed ... America has.
I believe that most of these white children who want a white prom, do so because their white parents promote and encourage it. As per the article, the practice started after the school district stopped sponsoring it due to fear of interacial dating. That is not the work of the children. That is the work of the adults who are supposed to be in charge of them. Apparently, the interacting done by the kids was serious enough to be noticed and deemed needed to be dealt with by the adults. No child is born prejudiced. That trait has to be taught and nurtured. And this article is just a testament that shows that, at least in rural Georgia, the practice is still alive and well. And although I don't find it unbelieveable, I do find it shocking ... and very, very sad.
I would prefer to think that you just don't care rather than to believe that you think that the continued perpetuation of racial prejudice in this country has no effect on you and I or is not importance to us as a people. When I first heard about this, I thought it would be fit for Yahoo News' "Oddly Enough" section, which reports on really weird news. It's really bizarre to me that they care that much about race. I sort-of leaned in Faheem's direction on not caring much, but...

They found one guy on CNN who went to the white prom who was willing to talk on camera. I wish that I could remember his exact words, but he did assure the reporter that the white prom was not racist in any way...after all...there'll be black people there catering the party!

Hi! I'm new here...actually to all these forums. I found this one via Lofton's post on another board. I was invited to post on that board's "prom post".
I lived in Butler for 11 years and I can tell you that the racial problems in that town/county are much bigger than the "prom". The "prom" happens to be a very public indicator of those problems. People of Color (black, hispanic, asian, mid-eastern) aren't treated as equals but are treated as though they are "beneath" the whites. I thought that last year they were finally dragging themselves out of the 19th century and doing what's right. Of course not! They are too ignorant to know what's right and what's wrong. The fact that the white children had their private party and yet were allowed to go to the real prom too should show everyone what selfish, ignorant brats they really are. I think people should inundate Wayne Smith, Taylor Co. School Superintendant with letters, phone calls, emails, etc. in support of pulling their ignorant little heads out of the sand. I agree with EbonyRose its not necessarily what they're doing but the fact that they are being taught that what they are doing is okay. This is the future of America and unless someone takes a stand and shows them (whether they like it or not) they can't treat any people as 2nd class citizens then we've made no progress. I hope my child will come of age in a world that is more accepting and open minded than mine was.

Mariana, welcome aboard. I have a few questions for you since you are on the scene in this particular town. Based on what you said this town has a racial problem that is illustrated by the white children wanting to have an all white prom. I would imagine that if the racial problem is as big as it now appear to be based on your post, much of what goes on in this town is done with groups segregating themselves from one another; meaning that the Black children in the town attend parties and hang out at places where majority if not only Black people frequent and the same could be said of the white children of this town. In saying that I say this, if every social gathering that takes place in this town is done in a segregated manner, what is the problem with these children having a party like they would normally have be it for prom or just for lil johnny's birthday. It would appear that the problem with this particular party is that it made it self out to be a Prom in lieu of the actual school prom? If the children that attended the all white prom also attended the school prom, then shouldn't this pseudo-Prom held by the all white students be seen as a private party and not school sanctioned which it was not? If this is the case then we are back to square one, why do or should any Black man or woman care that these kids who outside of school do not socialize with Black men and women have a party for them and their white friends. This party was not sanctioned by the school as a school event the students gave it that name. If the students have a graduation party and only white children attend will there be the same out cry as the one seen for the white only pseudo-prom. In my assessment the only thing that should have been done in this case was for the school and the school district to release statements saying that this event held by these white students was not a school sanctioned event or Prom and that the real Prom sponsored by the school is taking place on such and such date. If there is no uproar about parties held in this town every weekend that is all white or all Black then why should we care about this party being whites only?

Faheem...first let me say I lived there for 11 years, 2 years while in elementary school and 9 years after high school.
You make an interesting point. IF these children had not called it their prom perhaps it wouldn't have raised the attention that it did. You're absolutely right there is no socializing between the races at all, at least not that I ever saw. Perhaps that's primarily what I take issue with. I'm not saying that people should be forced to socialize together but why the hell is it in this day and age there are people who still think themselves better than other people based on the color of their skin. Why would children want to exclude anyone for that reason? Kids are kids and they will always exclude others and be cruel or mean to others...but why is that they're allowed to do it based on someone's race? To me that's the bottom line...I hate racism in all its forms, I don't believe in segregation or separation. Perhaps I should just be glad that I got out and that my child will never be subjected to these people and their intolerance and ignorance.

Actually, neither the whites-only prom, nor the integrated "black" prom, were school sponsored events. The school itself stopped sponsoring proms at all, a few decades ago, out of a fear of interracial dating, once it became clear that any school sponsored proms would have to be integrated. Since then, to this day, there have been no official proms.
Both events this year were psuedo-proms. Of course, the school could simply decide to start sponsoring real proms again, for the first time in decades, which by law would be integrated.
