Philadelphia Leader in Bitter Campaign Fight With Republican

(CNN) --The FBI planted an electronic bugging device in Philadelphia Mayor John Street's office, a senior federal government source and two law enforcement sources told CNN Wednesday.

But the FBI disputed the report.

"We have not confirmed that at all," said FBI Special Agent Linda Vizi. "When the bug was found, we were made aware of it, and we will proceed from there."

The sources would not say whether Street was the target of a public corruption investigation going on in Philadelphia, the sources told CNN.

Rich Manieri, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan, said "Justice Department policy is to neither confirm or deny an investigation."

Street said he doesn't know why the device was placed in his office or who put it there. It was found Tuesday during a routine security sweep by Philadelphia police, and the FBI was called in to investigate.

Street told reporters Tuesday he was not involved in any activities that he knew to be under investigation.

"I have done nothing wrong," Street said.

Street, a Democrat, is campaigning for re-election November 4 in a close race against Republican Sam Katz, whom he beat four years ago in a close race.

Street said bug's "timing is very suspicious" and that it was possibly politically motivated.

The mayor's rival was cautious in his remarks about the device and said any "innuendo" about Republicans being to blame was unfair.

Katz asked for the situation "to be clarified as quickly as possible" and said it was important for the city to know sooner rather than later why the bug was planted.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said if the mayor was not the target of an investigation, "then the FBI owes that explanation not only to the mayor, but to the people of Philadelphia."

Police Inspector Bill Colarulo told CNN the sweeps are done periodically, and the last one had been performed three or four months ago. He said the police commissioner notified the FBI, which now has the evidence.

The bug's discovery prompted Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pennsylvania, a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, to call on the Justice Department to release any information it has about the bugging.

CNN's Kelli Arena, Deborah Feyerick, Terry Frieden and Phil Hirschkorn contributed to this report.

In this state of "hightened" security, how did that take place without security guards and police officers knowing about it.

Video tapes should be examined, then every officers that may have, could have, or should have been in contact, inclusive of the supervisors should all be repremanded. The ax should fall on senior officers as well as front line officers.

If the mayor can't feel safe and secure in his own car, house, or place of employ he's got to make some changes.

Do you remember that a number of years ago there was a concerted effort on the part of the FBI (I think) to try to discredit black mayors and elected officials? It was some serious shyt! I wonder whether this is "round 2"? Roll Eyes

MBM, of course, do you think that they ever stopped trying to discredit that group of people? I doubt it. As for the mayor of Philly, he says that all he's doing is running for re-election. Although the FBI claims he's being investigated for fraud. Hhmmmm, trust the FBI or trust the current mayor of Philadelphia? Roll EyesWell, my trust lies moreso with the mayor!

Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society

Have they actually said they were investigating him for fraud? I thought the word was that he was not "directly" under investigation but that such "investigations" would likely implicate him and some form of wrongdoing on his part.

So far the FBI has "formally" said he's not involved from what I understand. Do you have some other info. or making an unfortunate yet reasoned interpretation?
"Fruhmenschen." With two dots over the 'u'. My understanding is that this was the name of the FBI's general mission to discredit black political leaders, because blacks are "primitive men" (which is what fruhmenschen means in German) who should not be allowed to hold political office in the USA. The idea was to investigate them even when there was no reason to believe they had committed a crime, because if you search hard enough, you may find something, and if you don't the mere act of investigating them creates a cloud over them that makes it hard for them to get reelected.
Republicans have had the FBI in their back pocket since the Reagan years. Who is suprised. If he is a Democrate who is a sure shot to win a seat that the Republican want bad enough he should fear for is life. Hasn't anyone noticed that so many people have been "investigated," had their reputations ruined or wound up dead since they have held so much power in this country. It's like the Mafia is running this country now.
