The North Carolina State Senate recently approved a bill that prohibits the state from using scientific projections for sea level rise. The State House followed with a proposal of their own: they want to pass a five-year moratorium on all coastal planning that factors in sea level rise. This is scientific censorship pure and simple, and Forecast the Facts is helping North Carolinians push back.
Stephen Colbert vs. North Carolina Politicians
Earlier this month, the North Carolina State Senate approved a bill that outlaws the use of science to protect citizens from one of the greatest threats of climate change: sea level rise. Seriously.
The “sea no evil” bill is so ludicrous that Stephen Colbert did a story about it. In Colbert’s “report,” he skewered the North Carolina Senate’s approach: “If your science gives you a result that you don’t like, pass a law saying that the result is illegal. Problem solved.”
Thankfully, Forecast the Facts members in North Carolina are pushing back, led by local resident Caroline Branca. You can see her email below.
We know you don’t live in NC, but we thought you would want to know about this. So please check out the Colbert video, and if you have friends and family in NC, please forward this to them. We can’t solve climate change or address sea level rise by pretending it’s not happening, and we need concerned North Carolinians to speak out.
Watch Stephen Colbert mock North Carolina's bill requiring the state’s coastal commission to use only historical data to plan for sea level rise. And if you have friends and family in North Carolina, please share this with them right now!
