I went to see Erykah Badu on New Year's Eve and she puts on a helluva show. This is my second time seeing her. I think she is one of best live performers out there right now. I think what surprises people is she is really funny and she's a good dancer and people are not used to seeing that side of her. I took my cousin to see her a couple of years ago and she wasn't that big of a Badu fan, but after the concert she was like "Oh, I'm going out to get her albumn!" Many performers out there right now just don't seem to have her kind of stage presence and natural charisma. There shows are very rehearsed and they leave no space for adlibbing and really just vibing off their audience. When I say other shows are very rehearsed I don't mean to imply that Badu's shows aren't polished. They are very well put together, but she allows herself to be spontaneous which I don't think a lot of popular singers do these days. Another problem is you go to a show and they can't hit a note anywhere near the notes they were hittin' on their cd. I'm not saying I always expect a singer's voice to be flawless, but dayum, can you at least sound like the same person?
