A coalition of African-Americans educators say the nation’s public school system is giving up on black male students and setting them up to fail.

This alarming quandary is being described as a national education crisis - and that’s not overstating the problem.

According to “Yes We Can: The 2010 Schott 50 State Report on Black Males in Public Education,” the overall 2007-2008 graduation rate for black males in the U.S. was only 47 percent, and half of the states have graduation rates for black male students below the national average.

The report highlights concerns that New York's graduation rate for its Regents diploma is only 25 percent for black male students.

New York City, the district with the nation's highest enrollment of black students, only graduates 28 percent of its black males with Regents diplomas on time. Overall, each year, more than 100,000 black male students in New York City do not graduate from high school.

That's an incomprehensible number, yet apparently true.

“Without targeted investments to provide the core, research-proven resources to help black male students succeed in public education,” the report concludes, “they are being set up to fail.”

The fourth report released by the Schott Foundation for Public Education provides state-by-state data that shows which U.S. school districts and states are failing to provide the resources black male students need for the opportunity to learn.

“Taken together, the numbers in the Schott Foundation for Public Education’s report form a nightmarish picture ― one that is all the more frightening for being both true and long-standing,” Geoffrey Canada, president and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone, said in a statement.

“These boys are failing, but I believe that it is the responsibility of the adults around them to turn these trajectories around,” Canada said. “All of us must ensure that we level the playing field for the hundreds of thousands of children who are at risk of continuing the cycle of generational poverty. The key to success is education.”

Some civil rights activists, like comedian Bill Cosby, have publicly blamed black parents for not preparing their sons to be productive citizens, and they’ve criticized black mothers and fathers for allowing school systems to raise their children.

"I don't know where we lost it or how we lost it, but people are not parenting," Cosby said last year during a speech in San Jose, California. "These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids - $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.'"

Two years ago, President Barack Obama, who was seeking the office at the time, demanded that fathers, especially black men, shoulder the responsibility of healing broken families. Obama condemned absent fathers who have "abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men."

"You and I know how true this is in the African-American community," Obama said, outlining statistics showing that more than half of all black children live in single-parent households.

Such children are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime, nine times more likely to drop out of school, and 20 times more likely to end up in prison, he said.

"And the foundations of our community are weaker because of it," said Obama.

Meanwhile, the Schott Foundation report highlights the success of New Jersey’s Abbott plan, which demonstrates that when proper resources are available to all students, “systemic change at the state level can yield significant results.”

New Jersey, according to the report, is now the only state with a significant black population with a greater than 65 percent high school graduation rate for black male students.

Highlights of the report’s findings include:

• The five worst performing districts with large black male student enrollment (exceeding 40,000) are New York City, N.Y. (28 percent); Philadelphia, Pa. (28 percent); Detroit, Mich. (27 percent); Broward County, Fla. (39 percent); Dade County, Fla. (27 percent).

• The states with black male student enrollment exceeding 100,000 that have the highest graduation rates for black male students are New Jersey (69 percent), Maryland (55 percent), California (54 percent) and Pennsylvania (53 percent).

• Some states with small populations, such as Maine, North Dakota, New Hampshire and Vermont, have graduation rates for black males higher than the national average for White males.

• The districts with black male student enrollment exceeding 10,000 that have highest graduation rates for black male students are Newark, N.J. (76 percent); Fort Bend, Texas (68 percent); Baltimore County, Md. (67 percent) and Montgomery County, Md. (65 percent).

• The districts with the lowest graduation rates for black male students are Pinellas County, Fla. (21 percent); Palm Beach County, Fla. (22 percent); Duval County, Fla. (23 percent); Charleston County, S.C. (24 percent) and Buffalo, N.Y. (25 percent).

• Dade County, Fla.; Cleveland, Ohio and Detroit, Mich. also have notably low graduation rates for black male students — each at 27 percent.

“America and its states and communities will not thrive in the 21st century without providing all students — including black males — a fair and substantive opportunity to learn," said Dr. John H. Jackson, president and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education.

This sounds like propaganda by the National Education Association (NEA).

I suspect most of the members of that 'coalition' are card-carrying members of NEA.

As a categorical group, I have little faith in their personal, and professional intent.

This is OLD news.  I think young black males are systemically and subliminally set up and when they accomplish their fate....that's when the judical system begins to make mola off of the newest generation of black men.  Don't believe that?  Then how come most black men who are convicted for petty crimes are sentenced to do hard time [while their white counterparts only get a slap on the hand] more often [too often] than other racial group of males?  We were talking about this very thing yesterday in a meeting...regarding a different venue of course:  Public housing.  Back in the day...early 60s...in many inner cities across the country..the rule was:  If a black man and black woman lived together as a family....she, the woman that is, could not QUALIFY for low income housing unless she was SINGLE[with her 10 children].  Meaning:  The Black man could NOT be there.  Hence, the movie:  Claudine.  That system was designed specifically for black men to fail at having a normal family life...many had no choice and took to the streets to live a life of crime.  Instigating, highlighting....glamorizing if you will.....the "thug" world.   This is just one example in my opinion, of the BIG set up...but!  I'm just sayin
Actually, I agree with the article almost entirely.  Being from New Jersey, I can tell you that our neighborhoods are in terrible shape.  All of the crime, poverty and self-destruction you see anywhere else, you see here.  So if NJ public schools are graduating the largest percentages of black males, it makes the most sense that the Abbott plan is what deserves most of the credit.  This is a statewide measure aimed at making sure that all districts are adequately funded.  Ample school funding is the main thing that distinguished NJ schools from other states.  So chances are, if other states follow suit, you fix a great deal of the problem.

Yes, there are other factors, but 47% vs. 69% is hard to ignore.

Funny how it was only a set-up when it came to us, in the fact that public housing (just like welfare) was not designed for us, it was initially designed for, received and occupied by white people. When all the public housing was all white, there were no such requirements or restrictions, it was only after they no longer could or would discriminate against Black (and Brown) people that these rules came into play.  The same with welfare.  White people where receiving welfare and living in public housing before African Americans even knew it existed. Welfare was a safety net that kept whites off the streets and public housing was their springboard into the middle class. On the contrary, welfare became a trap for Blacks (and Browns) and because of discrimination in employment and housing, (most) public housing became a struggle for most Blacks to get out of.

Exactly!  You are on the money on ALL points.  I totally agree
Well ... one thing I do know for sure is that ... given the right opportunity and a little proper attention, our young black boys can and do learn, and are just as capable of being educated the same as anybody else!!

There's no kind of 'mental deficiency' there.  So, it only stands to reason that the problems that occur are external in nature.  The educational system in this country in general is immeasurably screwed up in many ways and for many reasons ... even Black kids outside of 'urban areas' who have a better chance of getting a more decent education may still end up in subpar schools because of things like discrimination, a lack of quality teachers, inferior books or supplies, etc.

These statistics for Black boys may be dismal ... but the overall graduation rate for all of our children all the way around is nothing to write home about either.

I live in Fort Bend County, Texas, a district, which was mentioned in the article as having a high graduation rate for Black boys (68 percent) ... and I must admit I'm kinda shocked by that number and really trying to figure out why that is!!   We're relatively small, considering somewhere big like L.A. or N.Y.  and I guess the majority of the Black families here would be considered "middle-class" (the poorer and more improverished areas are mostly inhabited by Hispanics, that I know of).

There does seem to be a lot of parent participation in the schools .. and at least in the area where I live I do see a lot of young families doing things together (where the father is present and involved) which, I'm sure has a lot to do with things.  But there is also heavy/constant/(even) harassing police presence here, too, (we have neighborhood constables that patrol like damn bulldogs!  )  which seems to keep kids on the straight and narrow from the time they are little until they finally make it out!!

But, Texas, in general, is somewhere near the bottom when it comes to the education system in this country ... and that's counting ALL students of any race.  But, of course, our children suffer the most.  Just because children 'graduate' from the school system here doesn't mean they're really 'educated'!  I'm glad Fort Bend is ranking so high ... but, my real concern is for those Black boys in other areas that do not have the same chance for success.

Great point my sista  We were[again] talking about the SAME thang yesterday.  The fact that back in the day, high school was ALL you needed to launch off into life.  During that time, high school provided students with ESSENTIALS vital to every day living.  Which meant if you decided not to go to college....you still had enough SKILLS/TOOLS to take care of not only yourself but a family as well.  Things my generation took for granted back then-like home economics, cooking, sewing, wood and mechanic shops, bookkeeping, not to mention all areas of sports, the arts including music and dance.  We had what is known now as a college/life preparation course all balled up in a  3 year high school  journey.  And many...I mean many who did graduated....did amazing things with just a high school diploma.  When they started gutting out all these basic opportunities from  the high school experience, that's when the newer generation of students began failing.  My opinion of course.

And I say this cuz college is NOT for everyone.  But!  Back then, if you graduated with a high school diploma, you really achieved something your family could be proud of and it was something that could take you far in life.  Cuz many in my day couldn't  pass or didn't continue on to high school for reasons mind-bugglin[sp] today-like leaving school to work to take care of family if one parent left or died or they needed every able member to pitch in (that wasn't unusual in those days) ; or work cuz that person had the ability to open up a "shop" of some kind cuz "we" had that "owing our own business" mentality at the time-well in my neighborhood anyway.   And so there were many legitimate reasons why many chose not to finish school....and this was the norm.  In fact, in some areas of the country having a 8th grade education was enough to run a farm....or an agriculture, construction type businesses. It was the 3 Rs, reading, 'riting and 'rhemtic with a dolup of common sense.   Not in today's world.  But it was back then and those folks were the back bone of the country.  The true foundation of what made America great[even though we had to deal with racism and unfair practices.]    And what is soooooooo unfortunate is today's kids couldn't run a business...if you gave them  a whole lot of money with 2 years of classes dealing with nothing but "business!"  Yall know I ain't lying!

Yester year...if anything was a time when blackfolks could do whatever they put their minds to if they finished school or not...cuz for the most part...they had to.  Well....not today cuz they took out the most important "essentials" vital to development, maturity, people skills and human activity.  And this is why I think it is a set up for black males.  Cuz they were destined to fail merely by being male and black.  Massa's been on them since day one.  As I always say:  don't believe me?  Then look at our legacy in this country[with our young black males targeted and observe where most of them are today] and you will see the history of contempt unfolding.  But!  I'm just sayin' .

So when do we start defining education for ourselves and creating a curriculum kids can use regardless of the schools?   Even if it means telling them to ignore whatever crap the schools are dishing out.

In 1980 nobody was talking about giving every grade school kid a $3,000,0000 mainframe.  But for all practical purposes that is what we have now.  Just this morning a friend of mine was complaining about 100 MEGABYTES not being enough in his phone.  We were watching a Star Trek episode via YouTube and the picture was great.

But Black Americans can't figure out how to use this stuff for education without schools controlled by White people.  Give me a break!

OK so I have to ask, because you always bring this up Xumbrachist, how is the school system for black kids that you're working on coming along???
Are the laws of physics capable of caring about race?   I also get the impression that Black Americans are more stingy with knowledge than palefaces.  Trying to treat knowledge as property seems to be part of the problem.  So that means using this technology inefficiently.

Xum
Brotha Xum....has a point!  A great one at that.  I have experienced stingy blackfolks too in their selfish effort in trying to keep their knowledge to themselves.   Especially in career training.  They wanted to be the only ones to know all the answers so they would be invaluable to the company.   Kinda reminds me a little of the house vs field persona...but!

Set up to fail? Of course. And the fault lies at the feet of Negroes who fail as a collective to take a tenacious  stand for educating their OWN children. Why are Negroes not holding weekly meetings and interfacing with educators, administrators and school board officials directly about the abysmal academic failure of their children? Why are they not collectively and aggressively taking part in the physical security of their schools, personal involvement with their children’s academic problems, asking the administrators and teachers what they can personally do to improve the educational process in their schools? THE FAILURE IS THE PARENTS RESPONSIBILITY SINCE IT IS THEIR CHILDREN WHO ARE FAILING TO MEET THE STANDARD. Blaming the schools is such a rues and misguided blame game to excuse parental failure and responsibility. When will it stop? Let’s see, when will the glaciers descend upon North America again…..?

Maybe if you would learn how to write and speak properly, other ethnic groups wouldn't think black people are dumb. If you go to any other ethnic oriented site, you will not see the kindergarten level of speech and written communication. Its only on black oriented websites that you see this coon style method of communication.

Newsflash other ethnic groups see this as well. And you wonder why black Americans lag behind.

PS. Who in hell is massa? Do we need to get you some help?

Look!  You honky tonk asswipe....I ain't talkin' to YOU!  Got that?  Again...my question has always been.....WHY THE FOCK you here?  It is not MY POSITION to entertain the LIKES of stupid deep in the dark backward azz intellectually deprived neanderthals....like yourself!  If and only IF we are lagging behind....YOU know WHY!!!! As well as YOU know who the FOCK massa is.  So STOP playin this twisted racist tea-party detective type [ignorant azz] investigation in a BLACK forum[especially when addressing ME]....and oh yeah..,..get a FOCKING life since you're all WHITE and wonderful and finally came outta your CAVE.  GET. A. FOCKIN' LIFE!!! Got that Flinstone?
Oh and by the way to set the RECORD straight...since this neanderthal won't shut his fockin MOUTH!!! I'm gonna say a few things.   First, it is because of the so-called "COONERY" that brought this country up and exceeded many civilized nations TODAY!!!! It is because of the so-called COONERY that this country is by far the most advanced civilized nation in the WORLD!!!  Our so-called COONERY set the stage for many nations who were lagging BEHIND for CENTURIES.  No other ethnic GROUP has done that as SLAVES!!!  Not the Native Americans....or Amerindians from the Carribeans through Central and South America.   Not even the European indentured servants were able to bring their kingdoms out of the dark ages of backward thinking.  And oh yeah...even with low self esteem and not being able to read or write....we, that is BLACK PEOPLE  were able to create inventions, make discoveries and....and....and....obtain our FREEDOM!  All this without a focking education....i.e. white man's racist education.  Tell me what ethnic group can SAY that?  We did it and it was AGAINST the law.  Oh yeah not even MASSA could do what we have done.  Cuz for the most part he didn't have the ability to realize[which was sooooo obvious] that it wasn't so much "technique" as a courageous soldier that won wars in this country....it was his DEADLY diseases and vicious antics....that brought his enemies to their KNEES.  The stories I could tell....

So...hold up azzwipe.  Get the story straight....being educated wasn't the reason why Blackfolks were dynamic....cuz this so called "education" you are referring to is white man made-full of lies and untruths.  The reason why we were so brilliant...is because unlike you the backward azz neanderthal...we are the most intelligent beings in the world gentically [proof:  we were in the height of our civilization in Africa while yall were still in CAVES].  As slaves we did all that benefitted the world  while in this country ...without the white man's way of communicating and definitely WITHOUT the whiteman's way of READING and WRITING.  So what does that TELL your stupid azz?   Um hum...I know.  And we overcame massa's wrath by using OUR own code of intellect [ we created without again.... the so-called white man''s  EDUCATION].  And we didn't have to steal a thang to do it.   Not like yall.  Who have stolen EVERYTHING.....including religion, all the sciences, mathematics and your tired azz even TRIED to steal "the first man theory  and when you couldn't do it...you invented one:  the fake piltdown man.

Secondly, you guys have been in the dark ages soooo long....it took you years to discover that you as a serf could grow more than just potatoes-but!  you didn't think about it.  How many folks had to die for you geniuses to realize that you needed a backup?  So.  You got to know whiteboy didn't creat  "education" it is sooooo evident.  Just like everything else that didn't belong to yall even that i.e. education was stolen!!!  Yall was dummies back then even as you arrogantly tried to play it off now....guess what?  You're still a DUMMY-now that's sumthing you  probably created.  Being a vicious dum dum.   Don't believe me?  All you have to do is look at your VIOLENT history.  And tell me when did yall had time to study and ponder if you're starting and fighting  wars all the time?  Geez.  Bottom line:  You and your neanderthal ancestors are nothing more than.......theives!!!!   Which means the west was NEVER won.......it was stolen.
You must want attention from me.  Okay.    How ya doin' Brotha Nuggyt?  Are you alright, my brotha.  C'om here  Satisfied?  If this is NOT the case...leave me the fock ALONE!!  I wasn't talking to you NOR was I addressing you.  So......what's the problem?  I can't talk without your permission?  Is why I say YOU. don't DEFINE ME.  And if I am doing it all on my own...why dontcha LEAVE ME THE FOCK ALONE and let  me be a moron[in your definition] IF I WANNA!!!  Who the fock are YOU...god?
Okay....so.  You're insulting me now.  All cuz you don't like how I talk.  I know!  Ignore me.  That's the mature thang to do.  But!  I'm probably hitting a couple of buttons.  I do that you know.  That's just WHO I am.  But! You know what they say, if the kitchen's too hot.  And by the way, you need to beat yourself up for being the bully that you are.  The thing is.....I am who I am...and you and nobody else can do a DAMN thang about it....but!  Ignore  me.  Leave me ALONE.  Those two will work.

Uhhhhhh……I was wondering if you could patiently explain something Ms. K. You said they “stole” everything –including religion, all the sciences (e.g. chemistry, engineering, physics, medicine, etc..) and mathematics. Just exactly how do you "steal" religion, math and science? And exactly when and from whom did this theft occur? And what is this “first man theory” that you speak of? If you could detail an explanation, I would appreciate it. Just curious…….
