Whew! Michael Eric Dyson, was on fire. Dickerson, (did he covertly throw in , that she was 'a tool' for the power elite?) was not, in my humble assessment, prepared 'enuf', to converse on the 'finer points' of her argument/rebuttal, on Dyson' treatise on the 'Bill Cosby' incident/speech at Howard University in 2004.

I love it how Debra finally came forth with the truth about the sympathy/empathy she feels for Cosby. I believe that's so present in the views of so many people who support him - i.e. what he said to stir up this "controversy".

I'd have to really read up but I guess I'm like Dyson to an extent, at least she has a well developed Point Of View. And I do believe she is committed and sincere to a certain extent, however "confused" she may be IMO.
It was funny to see her trying to put the "You're trying to say he's not "authentically" Black"... and the whole Lonely Justice Thomas "we've abandoned him" stuff was too funny.

Nayo, I, too was quite disappointed in Debra's performance--you have to remember two things, though, Dr. Dyson's only equal, in the intellectual world, is Dr. Cornell West.
I've seen these two men (West and Dyson) with a who's who amongst black leaders of America, on various think tanks with Tavis Smiley--both men were unmatched. Secondly, Debra is not a good speaker--she's very bright and well accomplished but she doesn't speak well under pressure, and, most certainly would not make a good debator.
Pitting Dyson against Dickerson would be like pitting a Syberian tiger up against a Jack Russell Terrior. With no one else to controlled Dyson's tyrade of intellectual violence, he could tear anyone before him apart in seconds.
In my opinion, Bill, though he had good intensions, was, indeed, wrong with how he has handled himself with his wake-up call speeches, primarily because, as I had suspected and written a forum about, even before Dyson's book came out, Bill was and is out of touch with contemporary black culture and society.
It was wrong, as Dyson pointed out, for him to pursue a career as an entertainer for over 40 years and never have dealt with the meat and bones of racism head on like, say for example, Dick Gregory, yet, Bill assumes that, because he's black, he can come out of his 'Cosby' mode and speak down to the masses--Bad idea, Bill. I still love Bill though--I know his beginings--he's just out of touch, and he allowed his frustrations to overcome his better judgment.

I also love the statement Michael Dyson made towards the end of program, which is what I've tried to do since the first day I joined AfricanAmerica.org:

Debra Dickerson appeared to be more interested in making arguments that both suits her position in the Black community and arguments made against her and those who think like her. This is why she kept sticking to the whole authentically Black argument. She wanted to make the point that one can be a conservative Negro and still be Black, and Eric Dyson handled her point so well when he pointed out the fact that this is not about their Blackness, it is about position they have taken that are diametrically oppose to Black upward mobility.

I've long been a Michael Dyson fan. I watched about half of the interview, because I had seen, and heard him on a couple of other sessions on his promotion tour.
I agree that Debra Dickerson was 'out of her depth'. She's a journalist. Intellectual assassin is an apt description Dyson.
That is not to say he always wins. When with others of similar skills and talent, he will back up. But those kinds of sessions, while entertaining, seldom elevate anyone. Except maybe the participants in their own eyes.

Agreed. I think she may have been up to the challenge, if she had had the same type of acrimony about the topic. She did'nt, he did. Anger, contempt,and excellent verbal skills can empower, embolden and energize. But, I would have much preferred Dyson 'debate' someone equal in his fervor.

Both men are of huge intellect. They may both suffer from photographic memory as well. It is not unusual for such persons who seem to have an endless access to information.
The tools of their combativeness are far beyond simple memory.
The killer is their ability to applied that newly recalled information effectively, AND on the spot.
Debra Dickerson could prepare all she wanted. She doesn't those 'on-the-spot-skills'.
And...she is not an intellectual warrior.
I would love to listen to a discussion on the same subject between Dyson and West.

Here is a guy that I think really fails us as a people.
He often takes the cheap way out; the accommodating way out.
In that piece, he identifies the construction of a 'black redneck', and runs with it.
He does not challenge his reader with the full reality of the construction which would have made necessary to reveal that 'white rednecks' and 'black redneck' were in many, many cases brothers and sisters.
That was a very, very cheap shot by Sowell.

Damn, Nayo and Faheem...and I logged on to Debra Dickerson's site to see if she at least posted a blog about yesterday's little slaughter.
Her site is STILL under construction after nearly six months, six more of which was filled with outdated blogs and updates. Don't get me wrong though--I still love my Debra,even though she still has proven, time and time again in public that she is very disorganized and easily intimidated.
I've had the pleasure of reading Dyson's book, "How to Love a Black Woman," and watch him speak before an audience of nearly 5000 sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Fraternity Inc. at their Boule' 4 years ago--he braught the house down. The man is superfluously prepared and a raw genius in every sense of the term. If he could just get around to doing a better job of returning the nearly limitless numbers of books he checks out from various libraries and institutions
