Hillary Clinton says frayed trust led to Ferguson violence

Hillary Clinton

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton broke nearly three weeks of silence Thursday on the fatal police shooting of an unarmed 18-year-old in Missouri, saying his death and the violent protests that followed resulted from frayed bonds of trust in a racially divided community.

The remarks by the former secretary of state during a speech to a technology group were her first about Michael Brown's Aug. 9 death in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson.

As a potential Democratic presidential candidate, Clinton was criticized for waiting so long to talk about the shooting of Brown, who was black, by a white police officer after a midday confrontation on a street.

Clinton lamented the shooting and the numerous tense confrontations that followed between angry protesters and heavily armed police.

"This is what happens when the bonds of trust and respect that hold any community together fray," she said. "Nobody wants to see out streets look like a war zone. Not in America. We are better than that."

She said America cannot ignore inequalities in its justice system.

"Imagine if white drivers were three times as likely to be searched by police during a traffic stop as black drivers, instead of the other way around," she said, or "if white offenders received prison sentences 10 percent longer than black offenders for the same crimes."

Clinton noted that higher percentages of black men go to prison compared to white men.

"That is the reality in the lives of so many of our fellow Americans and so many of the communities in which they live," she said. She said Martin Luther King Jr.'s call for racial equality "is as fiercely urgent today" as it was decades ago.

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton was among those who chastised Clinton and other politicians for waiting weeks to discuss the events in Ferguson. Sharpton said Clinton and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a potential GOP presidential candidate, should not "get laryngitis on this issue."

Use words like "racial equality" - checked.

Mentions Martin Luther King Jr - checked.

Says it is as bad as decades ago - checked.

Gives an example of racial inequality by talking about mundane situations like traffic stops - checked.

All this comes out of the What Black People Like to Hear From a White Liberal Handbook.

You can get it from Amazon for 15.99, it will guarantee a White person plenty of Black friends or even political office.

"Frayed trust" implies that there was trust to begin with, which is grossly incorrect when it comes cities like Ferguson, when it comes to many American cities where Black people are concerned, especially where young Black males are concerned.

What led to the protests in Ferguson was the fact that so many Black people, especially Black males being murdered by police, [and by your run-of-the-mill racists], that when this cop murdered Michael Brown, it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Black people have grown extremely tired of dirty racist cops murdering our children with impunity.

What's been frayed is Black people's restraint while trusting the "system" to be fair and just.

Ferguson is what happens when people know that racist Serial Killers are murdering them and their children with impunity, because systemic racism is so ingrained throughout our entire justice system that not a damn thing is done about it, other than to work to make sure the murderers walk free.

Hopefully, Ferguson is at least waking up some Black people.

Good point, implying there was trust shows us she really don't understand what is going on and that means she have not understood for decades. Tell me when there was some measure of trust black people had in police?

I agree, same old lines and another liberal who is afraid to speak the truth or don't know it. And I think she really don't understand, Hillary lives in a white world. Bill Clinton did us no favors why would we expect Hillary would be any different?

What the shame is, the Green Party have not caught a grip and is not able to attract enough voters from liberals and conservatives to make Democrats and Republicans to get real. The only Liberals I truly respect is Bernie Sanders and then Elizabeth Warren. Which is really a shame because there are a lot of issues that a well spoken Liberal could tee off and hit home runs with the public. They don't because they are afraid to piss off the super rich and the establishment.

It had nothing to do with frayed trust,  It had ALL to do with an African son laying in the street, with blood rolling down the road from his head because a so-called police officer slaughtered him with 6 to 10 rounds of lead.  It had ALL to do with an African son laying in his grave while his murderer roams foot loose and fancy free trying to establish an excuse, accumulating probably 300,000 dollars in donations from sympathizers, all the while being paid by the PD, probably heading on the way to millionaires-ville.  It has ALL to do with the murdered son being 18 years old (3,650 days from age 8), the murdered being African in America and the murderer being so-called White, age 28 (3,650 days from being 18) and possibly having an intense dislike for Africans in America,  It has ALL to do with the Whites of America staging an undeclared WAR upon their former UNPAID LABORERS/ROOMING PARTNERS/BUDDIES/BED WARMERS/RELIEVERS OF ALL THINGS SEXUAL of the PLANTATIONS of the NON-GLORIOUS SOUTH.

My heart's with Mike-Mike's family in Ferguson, Missouri!!

Just for the record:  That fire/tear gas you had flying at black folks in Ferguson, all Fourth of Julysie, it wasn't damn cute nor was it necessary!!!!  If any of those damn cops had just returned from Iraq and was suffering from PTSD, that just compounded the situation. Those dudes can't stand fireworks; sets them the hell off. Thank God there wasn't a Negro roasted on the flying fires; 'cause cops are sure good at that. Just a few thoughts about that damn frayed trust, as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. For you Hillary!!
