— Raquel Nelson faced three years in prison after her four-year-old son, A.J., was killed while crossing the street by a driver who fled the scene and later confessed to drinking. After 161,000 people signed a petition on Change.org, Raquel got a new trial -- and prosecutors finally dropped the charges against her this week. Below is a note from Raquel to everyone who signed the petition -- including you.
Thank you for signing. Though A.J. wasn't your child and we've never even met, I'm most grateful for everyone who allowed sympathy to guide them instead of apathy. This has by far been the most painful experience I've ever had but they say God doesn't put more on you than you can bear. I admit the situation has hurt and angered me to the point of no return and hopefully I can move forward. Your words of encouragement, prayers, and thoughts continue to give me strength as I enter into this next chapter of healing. In loving memory of A.J.'s precious life, it’s my hope to bring more awareness to the importance of pedestrian safety and better transportation infrastructure for everyone.
As the character V says in one of my favorite movies," People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." I quote this to point out that some thought it was foolish of me to fight, but you as well as many others in the world recognized abuse of power and stood with me and for that I'm eternally grateful. Thanks so much again for all the continuing support.
