Black americans need to be aware of the effects that consorting with voodoo practitioners can have on their health and life. Voodoo is used to manipulate and control the subject to get whatever the practitioner desires from them. That is why you see so many american blacks picking up ghetto people in the caribbean. Men who they would not look twice at in the states, they are meeting and marrying. These women/men are under the spell of mercury poisoning which is used to control the subject to get whatever the practitioner desires.

where are you getting:

nono I think you should do some more research on the religion before you make statements like that.

That article does not make these statements anywhere. Where are you getting this from? Confused
I'm sure your motives are good, however....
This sounds a heck like an epdisode of Law and Order SVU. It is so tired to hear negative things about voodoo.
There is positive and negative in everything.
I'd prefer transparent and informative discussion about this topic.

It's been around for ages... how much damage has it done compared to other religions? Christianity comes to mind...?

Mercury IS poisonous... but is that a 'standard' part of voodou practitioning?

Let's discuss what is a fascinating area of spiritual belief...

I have to agree with Firefly and MsPrettyGirl on this one. IMHO, the line of reasoning her is more ad hominem than well-reasoned.

Yes, mercury is toxic, and perhaps there should be more done to control its distribution, but that does not make voodoo evil, it is not. It is greatly misunderstood, however, and much of the secrecy stems from the hostility that practitioners receive from those who embrace cultural propaganda against it born of fear and ignorance.

I have been to Santeria celebrations with one of my good friends, coworker, and colleague who is a Santeria priestess. I know numerous people who practice vodun, candomble, macumba, etc. I think that it is important to realize that religions of various incarnations are often used to control and manipulate people, but that does not mean that they are inherently/intrinsically evil.

Finally, the tenor of your words suggest to me that you (or someone you care about)has been negatively impacted by someone associated with these traditions. If this is the case, I understand your concern/fear, but IMHO, that does not justify broad or gross generalizations such as labeling them as evil.

Thats complete crap. Most people from the Caribbean/Africa are college goers and are very successful.

African American Hoodoo/voodo>

Hoodoo refers to African-American traditional folk magic. A rich magical tradition which was (for thousands of years), indigenous to ancient African botanical, magio-religious practices and folk cultures. Its practice was imported when mainly West Africans were brought to the United States and enslaved.

Hoodoo is used as a noun and is dervied from the Ewe word "Hudu," which is still exant today. Hoodoo is often used in African-American vernacular to describe a magic "spell" or potion, or as a descriptor for a practitioner (hoodoo doctor, hoodoo man or hoodoo woman), or as an adjective or verb depending upon context. The word can be dated at least as early as 1891.* Some prefer the term hoodooism, but this has mostly fallen out of use. Some "New Age" non-Diaspora practitioners who have taken up Hoodoo as a hobby employ synonyms to include conjuration, conjure, witchcraft, or rootwork, The latter demonstrates the importance of various roots in the making of charms and casting spells. It is important to note that in traditional African religious culture, the concept of "spells" is not used. Here again, this Afro-botanical practice has been heavily used by the New Age, and Wiccan communities who have little understanding of "Hoodoo's" spiritual significance as it is traditionally used in Africa. An amulet characteristic of hoodoo is the mojo, often called a mojo bag, mojo hand, conjure bag, trick bag, or toby; this is a small sack filled with herbs, roots, coins, sometimes a lodestone, and various other objects of magical power.

_____

An earlier attestation dates from 1863. A Confederate infantryman, wounded in the failed assault against Union-held Helena, Arkansas on 4 July, said, "Since that day at Helena I tell the boys I would rather buck against a hoodoo than try to down old Glory on the Fourth of July." Barring a radically different meaning of "hoodoo," the reference seems to be to trying to beat a curse (as being preferable to refighting the Battle of Helena). [citations needed]
Further references confirm that early use of the term "Hoodoo" was used west of the Mississippi at least (see Hoodoo War aka Mason County War- Texas 1870s)...the term being used to describe vigilantes of that cattle "war", it is also suggested that the term may have referenced the white robed Klu Klux Klan riders of the era. In the official definition of Hoodoo there is also a reference to tall ghostlike rock structures in the west as being called Hoodoos, the similarity of the references being obvious.]

Again where do you see that African Americans are being drugged and tricked into marriage by Afro-carribeans? I've seen various "stuies" on the use/selling of mercury so you may be right in that instance but about the love spell nono spank

It seems like you are on some sort of Caribbean bashing campaign first they were putting love spells on us now they are spreading Aids to us in mass numbers(another post she posted).

fro Voodoo, Vodun, Hoodoo....all are misunderstood. Propaganda, movies, rheotric and mass media play a role in this misinterpretation. The most important thing is to research "facts" cuz people don't need Voodoo, Vodun, Hoodoo to poison, kill or control each other....there are other "properties" that can do the trick. However, I often wonder about the motivation behind it all. People have been doing this for centuries....and isn't called Voodoo, Vodun or Hoodoo, it's more like jealousy, envy, greed, power-seeking, hatred, or just plain "meanness."fro
If it is not evil why is it done in secrecy?

Why don't we see a voodoo church on every corner with an invitation that all is welcome?

Why is mercury and other poisonings used to control and manipulate people only sold to members of the secrety society?
A survey of 115 botanicas in 13 cities in
the United States and Puerto Rico found that
99 sold mercury (1). Johnson (12) surveyed
203 Caribbean and Latin American adults in
the New York City area; 44% of Caribbean
and 27% of Latin American respondents
reported using mercury.

If you don't think churches that promote poisoning to make a person ill to gain control of them and their money is evil, I HAVE A CAN of rat poison I can dump in your food when you turn your back. Oh yeah, I'll make sure to give you just enough to make you only sick enough for you to hand me over your bank account. I won't kill you, because I don't want to go to jail. (sarcasm) Yeah, we all should have that mentality.

What a glorious world voodoo cultures are (more sarcasm) that's why people are taking to the high seas and risking their lives to leave them.

A survey of Latin American and Caribbean New York
residents found that burning mercury
in a candle, mixing it with perfume, and
sprinkling it in the car were also frequently
reported uses.

To Get Married
This spell was designed to force a reluctant man into marriage. The main ingredient of the spell is the man's hair, which must be gathered and placed in a small wad of cotton without him knowing what it will be used for. The cotton is formed into a wick by rolling it between the fingers until some of it protrudes from teh rest of the cotton. This crude wick is used in an oil lamp that requires the following ingredients.

a large lily bulb love oil
coconot oil man oil
mint oil lyric oil
intranquile oil cantharides
"I can and you can't" oil quicksilver (another name for mercury)

"Well, mercury's toxic. And there's a problem withtaking anything like that internally. The other thing is when you have a toxic thing internally, mercury is a cumulative toxin that causes cavitation in the brain. And so as a result, people get a little stupid when they take mercury."

I SAY THEY'RE SO STUPID THEY THINK THEY'RE MORE INTELLIGENT THAN EVERYONE ELSE AND HAVE DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR
My only motive is to educate. Too many people are being brainwashed into thinking that people who just walked into this country a few years ago and benefited greatly from our struggle to win affirmative action are better than them.

When in fact, if they were honest, would admit where they truly came from

- countries that were so horrible and mean they would do anything to escape
- they did nothing with ALL THEIR FREEDOM (no oppression and no rascism to deal with) to build up a great black country
- the only thing of value in their BLACK countries were built by the white man
- they were so unintelligent they couldn't build roads, cities, factories, to make their own countries great. Instead they come here, and put their nose in the air and expect people to really believe they are smart and intelligent, when all they did is help themselves to the fruits of 500 years of american blacks struggle and are not even good enough to say thank you, ask for their own caribbean heritage month, and are not an asset in anyway to the american black community.
Helen its done alot of times in secrecy b/c of people like you who judge well, misjudge actuallly and condemn it as evil. If you were doing something that is misconstrued as evil by some people wouldn't you tend to want to do it in private too? We don't see a voodoo church on every corner with invitations welcoming all for the same reason. It could be dangerous to be out as a voodoo practitioner in some areas of the country because of ignorant people who don't understand what voodoo is really about.

Again i get your point about how dangerous/deadly mercury can be to the human body and that some use it in religious ceremonies, but out of all the links that you posted up I still have yet to see one with any statistical evidence that voodoo followers are using mercury to control people into doing what they want.

Marcus Garvey is one of the few black men mentioned on the KKK website. They consider him a hero for his attempts at a "Back to Africa" movement that failed. He also is the only black leader THEY HAVE EVER MET WITH. One has to wonder how he was being funded. He's their hero not ours. Thank God he failed or we would be over in Africa starving, raped, AIDS infected and dying.

Malcolm X mother encouraged his father to go up against organized gangs of white men with guns at a time that Black American women were hiding and protecting their sons/husbands from a society that would go unpunished for gunning them down. When I saw the movie and saw her NUT UP after they wouldn't pay out on that insurance policy....End of story.

Colin Powell's american wife suffers from depression- a disease of sadness. He admits himself that her father had a fit when she married him because he knew he wouldn't treat her right and that her father said, he had been trying to get away from Jamaicans all his life and couldn't forgive her from marrying one. The fact that he is a pawn for the republican party let's everyone know he has no interest in the welfare of black americans. Many white americans don't like him now for lying that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, throwing us into this war.

Sidney Poitier used Diahann Carrol(one of the most beautiful black women in the world) to get to the top and when he was done using her, married a white woman.

Harry Belafonte is the only one in the bunch that I have an iota of respect for. I have not known him to be a man of ill repute.
Helen, dear ...

It is obvious that you are angry and hurt because of at least one experience with someone from Caribbean.

But rather than bashing and trying to spread what is simply untrue information about an entire population of people, why don't you just tell us what he (or she or they) did to you, let us give you some sister-love ( ther ) and let's see if we can make better and help you move on! Smile

The facts are that voodoo is not evil, the majority of Caribbean/African people who come here are not AIDS-carrying serial killers out to wipe out the Black American population, and most find a way to fit into American and Black American society very well. For you to say anything less as a way of "spreading education" just makes you appear to be ill-informed and very bitter. Nor does it "teach" us anything.

Bad experiences with people/groups/religions happen to all of us. It's better when we talk about it and get it off our chests, get suggestions for healing and leave them in the filing cabinet under "bad memories." American men and women who have never even met anyone from the Islands are spreading AIDS to others. We have members on this board from the Caribbean who are neither evil, infected, nor in the pursuit to do harm. It is wront to project your anger towards them when they have done nothing to you, don't you think??

So, if you would like help with your situation, we'll do our best to give you that. But, if you just want to continue to live in hatred and negativity, I don't think you'll find anybody to share your feelings with you. Roll Eyes
See the website below to understand the source of their hatred. I was shocked when I realized it is still going on today BUT, they have a different tactic. Now they show it through these hateful marriages they make with americans to get greencards, steal all our money and destroy our health and lives.

They are all over this internet trying desperately to suppress the truth.

The relentless anti-American propaganda spewed forth by Michael Manley, Jamaica's admittedly pro-Castro Prime Minister, had resulted in the widespread hatred of Americans, British and Europeans by many Jamaicans. Racial hatred of whites and "beiges," as well as class hatred of anyone who appeared to have money or property, were rampant.

The open hatred and hostility which was directed at us seemed ready at any time to explode into violence, and indeed did so towards many people on many occasions, often with tragic or fatal results.

Jealousy is not good for you.
Here is my very uninformed ass-umptions about Helen...

An African born in Amerikka who doesn't realize that all African folks are oppressed and exploited worldwide reguardless of birthplace/residence. She isn't too bright(as demonstrated by her posts), so she blames 'Voodoo' for getting sprung on some slick Haitian dude who married and dumped her to get his papers. She is insulting her ancestors by demonizing their beliefs/culture/spiritual systems(therfore she is insulting herself) and doesn't realize that if it had not been for her enslavement, and subsequent suppression under Aglo Amerikkkan culture, she would be practicing the same religion(s).

She doesn't realize she got conned partially because of her own stupidity, but also because the racist immigration system, that only allows African/Black(and other non-white) immigrants into the country on limited student Visas(and rare work Visas) forces them into desperate measures, like marrying the first person that comes along for legal status. If she would have been hip to the game she could have realized what was going on and gotten paid for it, or not participated at all. But then again, if this Haitian guy wan't so damn cheap, he would have found someone he could pay up front, and wouldn't have married her in the first place .

Her dimwittedness then makes her blame all African people from the Caribbean and elswhere for her pitiful situation, not even realizing that the exploitation of the natural resources of our homeland(African) and the lands of the African diaspora by U.S. foreign policy(imperialism) and the multinational corporations(neo-colonialism) is what causes most of the African folks from the rest of the diaspora to flock as 'economic' refugees to the U.S. in the first place.

She thinks her brothers/sisters from the rest of the African diaspora are her enemy because she isn't aware of who and what our collective oppressor is.

This is just my ass-umption... Big Grin

ER, like I said before, you are sooooo damn nice! Wink

Kocolicious, you are so right. Although I do think that the Haitian revolution was successful for an ancestral reason, on top of many others...
At first I thought she was possibly a he-troll not to be feed, however, her words, ignorance, and blindness about Caribbeans is familiar.

I hardly ever find someone who doesn't espouse the mindset or been to victim of it be acquainted with this jumbo.

And I don't want to think that a victim is so self-hating to troll like that.

So perhaps she's legit.

Just another insecure person who feels the need to look down on someone in order to feel significant.

Or perhaps a victim of tabanca.

I didn't lust you! It was the mercury!

Perhaps she wanted a little Trini in her.

Now she's a little blue and bruised. Wink
I don't know where you came up with that stupid Haitian assumption but you weren't talking about me that is for sure LOL.

Helen why do you keep asking the same ridiculous question when you have already been given an answer? You just do not want to hear what anyone else has to say, you posed this post as a question but it was not really intended to be a question more of a rant/statement to open your warped opinions. So voodoo made terry McMillan's husband gay? what does voodoo have to do with Tupac's death? Lauryn hill is very much a christian who took time off of her career to get her spirituality in check or as she says, "get right with God," and be a full time mom. How can you say we have nothing in common with carribean americans???? bang we are one in the same, we share the same blood, the same ancestors. You really need to do some research.
I hope y'all won't mind me borrowing Abbey Lincoln's lyrics from a post by HonestBrother - it just seemed entirely appropriate...

Where are the African gods?
Did they leave us on our journey over here?
Where are the African gods?
Will we know them when they suddenly appear?
The ones dismissed with "voodoo"... "rock n' roll" ... and "all that jazz"?
And "jumbo" ... "mumbo jumbo" ... "razzmatazz" ...?
Where're the African gods who'll save us from this misery and shame?
Where are the African gods?
Will we find them while we pray in Jesus' name?
Where are the African gods that live and set us free?
We are the African gods ... you know? .... We are! ... You and me."

-Abbey Lincoln
fro As a teacher, it is not my policy to call anyone stupid or ignorant, however, I can tell when someone is suffering from misformation. Helen, there are libraries all over the world, probably in the Carribean islands as well. STOP what ya doing QUICK! And go there! While there grab a librarian and ask her/him to direct you to the African History study section and take your time absorbing it -and write notes. Cuz it's a lot. As you continue to read you will soon discover that nearly ALL captive Africans during slavery were scattered across the globe especially to the islands on the Atlantic Ocean front. These islands were used as deprogramming areas to breakdown the african's spirit and prepare him/her for submissive participation in the "new world." Not all africans went to the "new world." Others stay behind to work the plantations. Most if not all the islands adjacent to the route to America were involved including and especially: Haiti, Jamaica, Bahamas-just to name a few. So please.........for the sake of your "message" or the concern you have for your culture...get the facts straight/accurate...cuz folks here are "heavy hitters" they know their "stuff." Some convey it nicely....others don't. The point? Be real sure you know what you're talking about before you roll up in here....otherwise, get ready for a serious "beatdown/smackdown" cuz in here, they don't care who are, if you're wrong/or misformed, not only will they pick the "message" apart...they will most likely shoot the "messenger!" And sometimes what's left...."isn't" very pretty. I'm just sayin' fro

Many black americans all over the U.S. are falling prey to voodoo practitioners. A classic case is John Muhammed. Here was a man who could have been any black americans brother, cousin, uncle. He had a typical upbringing and led a crime free life until he allowed the voodoo practitioners into his life. He was a husband and father. John was conned, brainwashed and voodoo.

Now he sits on death row, while the evil Jamaican Malvo gets life in prison. Inspite of his age, he and his fellow Jamaicans, were the mastermind behind the whole evil plot. The only time I have known them to stick together is when they are perpetuating an evil against an american.

There is no doubt in my mind that if John Muhammed had never met these people he would never have turned to a life of crime. They conned him with the we're all just poor little suffering black people routine. The white man is our collective enemy while all the time feeding him poison to destroy his brain, make him highly suggestible to their evil plot to extort money from america.

If they had succeeded in getting the millions THEY WOULD HAVE KILLED HIM NEXT.

Americans beware of voodoo practitioners in the world and on ALL the websites who operate as a gang to stop americans from communicating. It is a damn shame that someone gave evil people computers.
