Only 9% representation and at least 4 teams w/ no African-Americans at all on their rosters.

IMO, it seems that elements in MLB don't want black players to dominate there, like the NFL and the NBA.
It seems that a black baseball player doesn't get newsplay unless, he's on some type of substance abuse, messing with steroids, having an affair, OOW children, or some other scandal that overshadows their accomplishments on the diamond.

imo baseball is the only place where a slow white boy 6 feet and under can still call himself a "professional" athelete

Black youth do play baseball. The thing about it is, there are no infastructure that encourages black youth to play the game in mass numbers. In Souther Va, where im from baseball is huge , it was my first love, but with mostly white coaches, white run youth leagues, black youth just dont get the opportunity to develop their skills like so much energy is put into white youth and programs for hispanic youth in central and south america as well as in some carribean nations. White supremacy is at the heart of the matter. They know blacks are naturally faster, stronger and more athletic than whites and they fear that and that goes all the way back to the Negro leagues, which I think we should have kept in some capacity. But they systmatically destroyed the league cherry picked good not great athletes to save face in the so called intergating america.I think baseball at the youth level is the most racist sport in america.In urban settings there isnt much money spent on sports and recreation so basketball and football take front seat and the MLB sends all ifs money to the White suburbs or rural areas. On a side note, look at whats starting to happen in the NBA they are slowly trying to balance the power of the black basketball player with european players. Anywher they can get more whites or non blacks to participate they do.

No. I wouldn't make that generalized a statement. I would say, however, there some [professional/semi-professional] sports where Blacks represent the overwhelming majority of the superior participants in that sport.

i played little league like one yr...
i was naturally the strongest and fastest player on my all white team...
but the coachs sent me to t-ball...
it was so damm boring i quit..
signed up for football and never looked at a baseball agian..
i think our natual skill sets (running, jumping and power) lend themselve more easily to football, soccer and basketball anyway

But I'd say the number probably really exceeds 25%. The 9% number does not appear to include David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, and the vast majority of the black players in the game, because they are "Latino."
I haven't clicked on your links yet, Blaqfist, but speaking as the only black man I know who likes baseball, the reason there is such a timy number of African-American baseball players these days is that African-Americans simply do not like baseball. In the NY metro area, during the playoffs, the hottest rivalry in sports was being played out (Yankees/ Red Sox), and when I brought up Aaron Boone's dramatic home run from the night before, brothers were looking at me like I had two heads. Apparently, we as a whole have "moved on" from baseball. We (not me, but "we") find it boring, esoteric, abstract, and too slow. That is the reason we're not well represented.
Unless you want to argue that there's a racist conspiracy to influence us to find baseball boring in the first place, thereby obviating the need to engage in ways to keep us out, then the answer is solely in our disinterest.
And Huey... Other than Derek Jeter (black), what baseball player, white or black, gets headlines outside of the sports page, unless they're in trouble? Even among white people, baseball is no longer the kind of sport that lends its players extended fame outside of baseball circles.

I think it was around the 80's that communities -- inner city one's at that -- stopped really maintaining/building new parks for kids to play baseball. I believe it was the Reagan years and the recession. Schools were dropping the program from their curriculum and the interest and the ability to play little league started to decline. Joe Morgan is supposed to be spear-heading a project to revitalize neighborhood parks and baseball programs around the country. I hope it works!

They love it in Latin America, and black Latinos apparently view the game similarly to how African-Americans tend to view basketball or football. That seems to be our "national" sport these days.

i think maybe in regards to black americans we are seeing the effects of decades of descrimination..
baseball is their pastime (culture) and they want to keep it that way...
part of it maybe that black kids see different options in hoops and football...

I recall a documentary shortly after the revolution in Nicarguaga. (60 minutes, maybe?)

Johnny Damon, formerly from the Red Sox, now playing for the Yankees...that is unless you find extensive facial hair offensive. Then again, he did shave it off since he's been playing for the Yankees.
