AFRICANGLOBE – On his daily radio talk show Keepin It Real with Al Sharpton, the omnipresent preacher kept it real. Really real. Shaprton dedicated three hours of his 22 hours of weekly broadcast time to a subject that has crossed many minds in the Black community. That is: that Black people spend too much time focused on entertainment and other trivia than on important issues affecting their lives. Those issues include money, personal finance and voting.

 

“Anytime you have more people that know more about Kim Kardashon and Kanye West than their own kids there is something wrong with that,” Sharpton said. “I know many people who can give me more [info] about the latest on what they’re doing — about Kanye — than who their daughter is dating. That is sick,” he concluded.

 

Interestingly, an entertainer, James Brown, played a key role in Sharpton’s life. But unlike what is seen and heard in entertainment currently, the Godfather of Soul often carried a heavy political message in his work. That sensibility is now missing in the music Brown invented — rap and hip-hop — 25 years after social conscious artists such as Public Enemy hit their stride.

 

But perhaps worse than that, Sharpton wondered out loud if the community now uses entertainment as an escape.

 

“James Brown had a song called “Escapism”, Sharpton noted. “Are we in escapism? And is it better to talk about Rosa Parks and Dr. King and back in the day,” instead of what we have to do now? he challenged the audience.

 

Sharpton’s observations may not be new, but they come at a particularly crucial time for Black Americans. Though the first African American president was elected four years ago in a major historic achievement, the legal and fiscal challenges are mounting and the issues require a level of attention that not even presidential power can fix.

 

The Big Rollback?  The Supreme Court is currently considering two cases that may likely be the end of affirmative action. Simultaneously,the Roberts Court is considering a case, Shelby County v. Holder, that could mean the end of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.

 

Three days ago, Virginia’s Governor Bob McDonnell continued a trend over 30 other states have already worked on: Enacting restrictive new voter ID laws that make it more difficult for people to vote. A rollback of legislative gains won during the civil rights era would appear to be well underway.

 

Additionally, the largest wealth gap in 20 years between Blacks and Whites as a result of the foreclosure crisis is damaging the community. The Black unemployment rate, which in 2011 featured the highest Black unemployment rate in 28 years — 16.7 percent — has been a persistent problem as has the Black male dropout crisis.

 

But in a culture driven by celebrity, entertainment gossip, bling and distraction, there is an open question as to whether the type of political mobilization required to meet the challenges of those issues is possible. The entertainment and media industry thrive and profit from ads that celebrity culture drives.

 

“Do you think that African Americans have a realistic understanding of where we are in terms of today’s present conditions or challenges or are we in denial?” Sharpton asked his audience.

 

Many of Sharpton’s callers during the three hour show agreed. “I agree with you absolutely. We’re more focusing on the cars the house and clothes and our kids are running wild,” said Mark in Cleveland.

 

“We’re the only ones that fight one time and think it’s over — no, you fight and you keep fighting until you maintain that,” Sharpton concluded.

No matter WHAT news website you go to these days ..... Black, White, reputable or rag .... the very FIRST so-called "story" or information article you're going to see is going to be about some entertainer or celebrity!!!  And whatever scandalous activity they happen to be involved in at the time.    I find it truly disgusting.

 

And it's NOT just because of the intentional 'dummying down' of American's intelligence that the media seems intent on inflicting on people.  It's also because .... that really IS the low-level of intelligence of MANY Americans (of all races)!!!    And they sit there and eat up all this "reality" crap like it's The Last Supper or something!!  And insinuate themselves into the lives of these celebrities like they were kinfolk!!  And think that what they think really matters. 

 

It's a sin and a shame.    But, I'm with Rev. Al!!    Go on and let these White people waste their time wondering what Kim & Kanye are going to name their baby (because honestly ... WHY should we give a good got damn?? It's not OUR baby!  And NONE of us will even ever SEE this baby - let alone have ANY responsibility for it - in our lifetimes!!   ).

 

MEANWHILE .... Black people need to learn to do the more intelligent and meaningful thing and scroll down the page of these websites (and you have to go at least half way down to get to any REAL news or information ... and keep ourselves apprised of what's REALLY going on with things that affect our lives ... what's REALLY important to our well-being, progress, and benefit ... and QUIT feeding our children daily doses of smut, ignorance, violence ... and, for God's sake .... Housewives of ____________ (fill in the blank) ! 

 

About the only thing I would halfway disagree with him about is that .... I think we DO need to continue to talk about "back in the day" .... but I DO agree that we've pretty much talked Rosa Parks and MLK near-bout to death by now!!    There are SO MANY OTHER heroes and intellectuals and pioneers and great minds that are NEVER talked about ... never introduced to our young'uns for the contributions and ideas in forward progress that they are responsible for!!!

 

Our history - our WHOLE history - is our foundation that we are standing on right now.  And we cannot build a future without it.  So, we cannot afford to let it go.

I haven't read the article yet but I have to make a comment.

 

 I used to work for IBM.  I had to show up in a suit an tie every day on the day shift.  They then decided that if you worked the night shift you didn't have to wear a suit because they felt it would be safer at night.  That is when I volunteered for the night shift.

 

I find it so strange to see pictures and videos of men in Japan and China wearing suits and ties.  Why does everyone go along with this.  The only thing more ridiculous than neck ties are high heel shoes.  At least the don't cause men to fall down stairs.

There goes someone else telling black people what we should and shouldn't focus on. At this point in time we should be focused on survival. We have been excluded and exploited for centuries. Did we expect anything to positively change?

  You ain't NEVER lied, my brotha.  High heels are the most ridiculous invention that was originally designed for horse riders[probably by some fool in China/Japan]....and then another male fool thought "oh I wonder how a woman would look in these high wooden stilts as she washes dishes and cook meals ."  And this painful and uncomfortable trend has been a burden to women every since.   But!

  You know me and colleague of mine were JUST talking about this cancer epidemic in one of the most richest countries in the world.  Clearly they can't go to places like Africa or other developing countries for intervention for cancer.  Cuz why?  These countries don't have money to pay for doctor's luxury homes, boats, vacations and lifestyle...but!  America can.  Hmmmmmmmmmm doesn't this sound strange or profitable?  Cuz folks go where the money is.  Right?  So here's another question lurking.  Is this cancer scare REAL?  Or are the people being played?  Cuz if a doctor says you have cancer...where can you go to find out if it's the truth since doctors nowadays have this sacred brotherhood going on where they will NOT undermine each other diagnosis....so where does one go?  That's the million dollar question right there.   But!

The Cancer Industry is just like the Oil Industry, they know where cancer comes from just like they know that fossel fuels pollute and destroy the planet, and just like they know that there are alternative non-destructive energy sources, they also know that there are alternatives to people, even children, having Cancer.  The problem is that just like the Big Oil Lobby, the Big Pharma Lobby is going to dictate what Congress will and will not allow, outlaw, implement and/or have regulated. 

 

It is our Food, Atmosphere, Toxic Environment that gives people cancer.  The remedy for this is to outlaw unnatural substances, chemicals, fertilizers and genetically modified foods, and pollution, destructive fossel fuels and nuclear energy and nuclear waste.  But, since Congress works for the very industries that are responsible, instead of the American people, nothing has changed in all these years and nothing is going to change anytime soon, unless the American people all ban together to force a TRUE change in this country, beginning with getting rid of 99% of Congress and the Supreme Court.

I agree with conservatives/Tea Party advocates/Conservative Democrats/Republicans, etc., etc.,  not only because I'm a conservative, but for the fact that governmental control over an individual, a family, etc., etc., should be limited. The more control that government has over a citizen, the less freedom that a citizen has to control his or her own destiny.  Unless held accountable to the Constitution, the U.S. government, be it Federal, State, or local jurisdiction, rarely, if ever, looks out for the best interests of any citizen or group of citizens.

Just like any other group of citizens, legal immigrants, etc., etc., U.S. born black men and women have the same right to pool resources and his or her skill set to finance and manage the day to day operation of a private Medical Center, private Hospital, and related disciplines to look out for the health of U.S. born black men, women, and children, which includes our senior citizens.   Lowering the tax burden and limiting government control over any private business entity will make it easier for anyone, or any group of individuals who own a business to remain solvent and provide quality goods and services to all customers, at a reasonable price.

I'd rather have access to the type of government assistance that Caucasian and other farm owners have such as mega bucks or hundreds of thousands of dollars in a government subsidy to keep from going bankrupt than to have one dime in "Food Stamps/Social Welfare" that far too many U.S. born black men and women sell their souls and boot lick/kiss up to no good Democratic Party elected officials to beg for welfare, AFDC benefits, etc., etc., activity that is destined to keep most any "Food Stamps/Social Welfare" recipient in poverty and overly dependent on government for survival.

That's exactly where we're headed since nothing has really been done to rid our government/Congress/Supreme Court of its fascists.  America is going to continue to stagnate between receding back into its past transgressions and a sliver of a chance of advancing to it fullest potential.

The Statute of Limitations doesn't apply here because serious Constitutional violations have taken place, all being related, that have taken place since then, and this is also court documented. Finally the defendants in Los Angeles Superior Court Case 895188 have also admitted guilt.  I was banned from African America.org a few years ago. I just replanted the seed.  Now I'll watch from a distance to see what develops.

Article VI, USC:  This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding. “……Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and Members of several State legislatures (all elected officials), and all executive and judicial Officers of the United States and of the several states, Shall be bound by oath of affirmation, to support this Constitution. 14th Amendment, USC, Section 1:   “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” 14th Amendment, USC, Section 4:   “……But neither the United States public debt of the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave: but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.”
