In order to attend college, you have to graduate from high school. I don't know about the rest of the country, but in my town (the same town where you attend college, 00Negro) the dropout rate is steadily increasing and the rite of passage to manhood is not to go to college and obtain a profession, but to go to jail and obtain a rep.
This is a city in decline, with businesses and the middle class racing to leave for the suburbs leaving a core citzenry of the unemployed, underemployed, and disheartened. There's an attitude of depressed hopelessness in this town, hardly the atmosphere that would send an optimistic generation off to higher education and a promising future. Add to that an over abundance of drugs and competitive drug dealing and the quest for "bling-bling" and street glory; finishing school and going to college is as foreign and distant as the sands of Irac. Those young men with no support systems in place to encourage them towards a positive future are at extreme risk and, I would venture to say, doomed to fall into the abyss of drugs, prison, and early death. And the support systems are just not there.

At least, that's my take on it.
Numbers seem to correlate roughly with the numbers of 'unwed' births in our community, no fathers to provide guidance or support for these young males, and no accountability to anyone.

But I suppose we'll find a way to blame all this on someone else too. With all these free education dropouts, is there still any question that we have devalued education in our community?
I think that a 10 to 1 ratio is really embellishing a phenomenon that does not need embellishment. There are multiple factors associated with this phenomenon. For females in the hood, nearly all their hopes rest with either educating themselves or hooking up with a man who can provide for her and given that there are not many black males doing that, education becomes the only path to a better life for many sisters. However, for black males, sports, entertainment or crime all are seen as viable and attainable means of earning money.

If these alternatives avenues to gaining money and or fame were as constricted as it is for black women, then you would find more black male youth shifting their focus and priorities towards education. People simply make choices from an array of options that are known and perceived to be viable and achievable. Black male youth are inundated with images of black male athletes who gain fame and fortune. They are also inundated with images of black male rappers and entertainers doing the same thing. In their communities they see the money, cars, cloths and women gained from illegal activity by males. There are few images where the black male youth can directly link education and success and education becomes a theoretical and not observable means to success for many black male youth.

The sister youths are faced with the same voidance of observable manifestations of success via education, but their options in sports and entertainment and crime are much more constricted and much less rewarding than they are for males and thus they follow the theoretical path towards education.

The Italian, the Irish the Jews all engaged in crime organizations, throughout the 1900's. Sophisticated criminal empires were built from white criminals. Poor whites who become bank robbers are looked upon nostalgically by this society. Bonny and Clyde are good examples of how white regularly and routinely committed crimes when they were poor. However, black crime is never viewed in the same way that white crime is viewed. Black crime is always looked upon in a much more negative light than white crime.

Well, NOAH...

I won't begin to defend "crime", though I know what you are saying.

I think the bigger indictment is on those of us who are not "poor" and incline to resort to 'a life of crime'.

We are good for saying "Just Say NO!" but somehow can't take into account how they are to say "YES" to "positive" things in an effective way.

It's easy to say we "devalue" education but hard to figure out how to actually fortify a value-system with real, live institutional realities that promote those values.

SOME white Italians, and SOME white Irish, etc. were involved with organized crime, but those groups still managed to go on to higher education and professions-- why is it so pervasive in the black communities? Why is lack of education and criminality becoming the norm?

Three 14 year old boys were gunned down in the street here in three separate incidents in the past month. They were not bystanders; they were targets. I can't see this kind of crime ever being looked upon nostalgically.

Why the huge disparity in the numbers of black men versus women attending and graduating from colleges? I hear from friends, for example, that at some of the HBCUs the ratio of women to men is 10 to 1!

What's up with this? What are the future implications of this?

that's for HBCU...other colleges are different. Many Blk men go to military. Black men are over represented in the armed forces.

I agree with Noah, my opinion is that simply put. AA Males have more "options" than AA females. I don't know too much but i think it might have to do with the mentality held. Since males in general are generally more goal interested and females are generally more task oriented, then perhaps females see it as a means to the end (end being whatever you do) and males just don't see this? I find this hard to beleive, and still can't comprehend why males are less represented in females.

I guess I'm tryin to say that it's not that females are over represented in that ratio, but that males are underrepresented.

$.02

Edit: To RadioRaheem, I goto a non HBCU and the ratio of black female to males here is somewhere near 5 or 6 : 1

http://www.census.gov/prod/2003pubs/02statab/educ.pdf

No. 209 - percent blk males HS grad 78.7%...Blk female 78.3% (note, there are more blk men grads than female ones)

College degree/grads - Blk men 16.3% and blk women 16.7%....i thought many blk women were saying that they [blk women] graduate from college at a 10 to 1 ratio to the blk man??? that's a load of bull and the census proves it.

isistah, the crime rate amongst those white ethnics declined with domination and control of territory. You will find the same thing in the black inner-cities. As police bust and round up major players in the crime game, new players then compete to take over the void in the market created. Criminals orginizations compete for territory via violence.

When I lived in Detroit, there was around 600 murders a year. It has dropped to around 400 now, which is the lowest it has been since the 60's. Much of the none domestic violence was linked to competition from the drug trade, First Heroin, then crack. Drug gangs used young brothers as soldiers to take or defend territory from rivals, which created a culture of fear and violence, where youths killed for rep and from the assumption that if they did not kill their foe, their foe would kill them.

The white criminals branched from street crimes to more clandestine operations. They shook down business for protection money and infiltrated the power structure of the SYSTEM. They influenced and controled many police officers and politicians. They was much more of a threat to society than black criminals are and will ever be.

I live in Baltimore, Maryland. Number one in herion addicts, nationwide. Currently struggling to deep the murder rate at under 300 per year. Population around 600,000.
Does the Census break down their statistics on a city by city basis? No, I don't think so. So the number is 79% in Baltimore and 1% in Bohunk, Nebraska or Rockville. Don't you read the Sunpaper?
